This one, much like Cabin in the Woods, really caught me by surprise. While it’s no Cabin, 21 Jump Street did make for a pretty fun time with the hilarious tag team of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. Simply put, both stars are too old for this “shift” as they go undercover on Blu-ray and DVD June 26th. The Blu-ray set features a gag reel, deleted scenes and many more hilarious special features. Ordinarily this is not my cup of tea, but when one of my favorite press agents in the Cleveland area market asked me to post this, how am I supposed to say no? I’m too nice of a guy. Besides Cabin in the Woods, the other movie that totally surprised me this year was Chronicle. Even though I’m not a huge fan of these handy cam movies, I have to admit when things are done right, and by golly…Chronicle was done right! Chronicle asks the magic question…what are you capable of? The Blu-ray, featuring an extended cut with must-see deleted scenes, flies onto the format May 15th. That’s coming up quick folks. Mark your calendars. No wait! Better yet…
Wow! May 22nd is coming fast. What’s so important about May 22nd you ask? Well, that’s when a beautifully haunted tale comes to life on the Blu-ray format. I’m talking about The Woman in Black. Never ever did I see myself liking this film, but when I left the theater that cold Sunday afternoon, I left with a gigantic smile on my face. The script was tight, yo! So check it out. I have to admit. I know it sounds cheesy, but this film really was an adrenaline rush from start to finish for me. I’m talking about the Denzel Washington/Ryan Reynolds vehicle, Safe House, that is. I actually saw it twice in the theaters. Unless it’s The Dark Knight, that’s something I usually don’t do, but I will be breaking that tradition with another screening of Cabin in the Woods this weekend. But anyway, the year’s most explosive action blockbuster will be available on Blu-ray Combo Pack with UltraViolet and Digital Copy (I love that Universal provides you an option here) as well as DVD and On-Demand on June 5th. Well…I have to admit, as the month of May approaches I’m getting more and more excited about this Avengers project, and rightfully so with the exclusive Marvel footage leaked online today showing a very scrumptious Scarlett Johansson kicking a$$ like only the Black Widow can. It’s spy vs. spy in the ultimate battle for one woman’s affection this May the action packed comedy, This Means War, dukes it out on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download May 22nd. Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy form the perfect love triangle in this psuedo adventure-comedic love story. I didn’t think I would like it very much, but I think my man crush on Tom Hardy made it even more enjoyable. It’s not everyday your website gets its name up in bright lights or in a kick a$$ trailer for the whole world to see. So when that time happens you want to stand on the peak of the highest mountain and scream at the top of your lungs for all the masses around the world to take notice of you and your news. Am I right? Of course I am. And that’s exactly what I’m doing now. Here’s to one of the nicest guys I know in show business…director Paul Morrell. The Mighty Mel Gibson returns! This time it’s in a film written, produced and starring himself. What more can you ask for? I just watched The Patriot this morning while eating breakfast…bad a$$…but that’s not why we are here. Get The Gringo is an explosive action filmed infused with dark comedy directed by Adrian Grunberg from a screenplay he co-wrote with Mel Gibson and produced by Mel Gibson, Bruce Davey and Stacy Perskie. Filmed in Mexico, the multi-lingual film also stars Daniel Gimenez Cacho, Jesus Ochoa, Roberto Sosa, Dolores Heredia, Kevin Hernandez, Fernando Becerril, Mayra Serbullo, Mario Zaragoza, Gerardo Taracena, Tenoch Huerta and Peter Gerety. 
Okay. This one can go either way. I know some people that hated this film and some people that loved it. Put me down for pleasantly surprised. I went into the theatrical screening of this one with very low expectations and I came out liking it. Why? Because it was a hot, skin tight black leathered Kate Beckinsale and it was an a$$ kicking good time! True…it lacked the fundamentals of a truly great film, but like Gerard to Conan and Gregg (bless his heart) to Transformers 2, Sean to Troll 2 (LOL) and let’s not forget Aaron to whatever his flavor of the week is (I’m just busting your balls), everyone has their guilty pleasure. Underworld Awakening just might be mine this calendar year. It’s a new war, a new breed and a new hope. And the 3D battle between the ever clanging Vampires and Lycans resumes on May 8th with a Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD release. Oh yeah…there’s that UltraViolet stuff too.

You know I can NEVER resist a good horror remake…especially if done right! Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III and IV) with screen story and screenplay by Scott Milam based on the original Mother’s Day written by Charles Kaufman and Warren Leight, Mother’s Day is a graphic remake of the Troma horror classic. After a bank robbery gone wrong, three brothers go home to hide out…only todiscover that their Mother (Rebecca De Mornay) lost their house in a foreclosure. The new owners and their party guests become the depraved brothers’ unwitting hostages. Their sadistic Mother soon arrives and brilliantly takes control of the situation, ratcheting up the terror. As the hostages struggle desperately to survive the harrowing torture, they realize that there is nothing a Mother won’t do to protect her children. 
I have to admit, I knew nothing about this movie before today, but I’m pretty damn intrigued. Based on Robin Hardy’s acclaimed 2006 novel “Cowboys for Christ,” THE WICKER TREE tells the story of Texas-based singer Beth Boothby (newcomer Brittania Nicol —I’m pretty excited to see her…do a Google Image search for her…LOL) and her friend Steve Thomson (Henry Garrett), two born-again Christians who come to Scotland to spread the gospel. When their initial efforts are met with disdain and disinterest, they find comfort in an invitation to sing in Tressock, the border fiefdom owned by Sir Lachlan Morrison (Graham McTavish).
