‘Creature’ No Great Feature

There does need to be a little bit of a disclaimer to the title of this article. There are some redeeming qualities and I commend Director Fred Andrews for bringing a touch of uniqueness to this picture. However, there are more sour moments than redeeming ones in Creature.

DC Comics Schedule of ‘The New 52′

DC Comics’ ‘New 52′ mass reboot of 52 of their titles is already a huge success.  A good handful of these titles are already out in stores. Check out DC’s schedule to see what issue 1′s you may have missed and what’s right around the corner… Continue reading ‘DC Comics Schedule of ‘The New 52′’

Batwing Makes DC Debut

One of the many titles of DC’s New 52 on the release agenda is the brand new character Batwing, which, as you can guess, comes from the Batman universe. The artwork caught my eye a few weeks back, but not having much to go on as far as background is concerned resulted in me not putting this high on my want-list. Oh how that has changed.

‘Shark Night 3D’ Has Small Bite

First things first. Did you really expect this to be as good as the original Jaws? Of course not, so let’s get that comparison out of the way. Now the real question is, does Shark Night 3D have any redeeming value? It’s along the lines of last year’s Piranha 3D, which I actually found to be a really entertaining film, in 3D or not. So let’s sharpen those chompers and take a bite out of Shark Night 3D.

‘The Help’ on Path for Oscar

Yes, yes, I know. This isn’t the typical Why So Blu movie review. We focus on pop culture flicks, usually consisting of comedies, science fiction, and kick-ass action films. The Help does not fall under any of those three categories. Yet, like last year’s The King’s Speech, this movie is too good not to talk about here.  Just like the article’s title says, watch for this film to be nominated for at least Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards.

‘Death Valley’ Makes MTV Debut

Last night MTV featured the premiere episode of the new horror-comedy Death Valley. Take a little True Blood, some of The Walking Dead and a pinch of Underworld, then mix it with a whole lot of Reno 911…Viola! A perfect formula for comedic success, right? No.

DC Prepares to Unleash ‘The New 52′

Never has a comic book publisher done what DC is about to. Through a great deal of planning, caution and artistic development, the home of Superman and Batman will reset 52 of its titles, many of which are already deep into the hundreds, to issue 1.   What would cause the company to create such a mammoth undertaking and erase the history of so many of its long-running titles?

‘Conan the Barbarian’ Reboot Swings a Dull Blade

While it’s not quite The Terminator, remaking any Schwarzenegger movie is always going to add a great bit of skepticism amongst fans of the original. Case in point, the 2011 version of Conan the Barbarian. In the 21st century trend of Hollywood remaking films, film execs apparently figured this would be another cult classic worthy of refreshing. Was it worth the risk?

Glee 3D Concert Movie a Mostly Solid Performance

This past spring I had the luxury of attending one of the many Glee Concert performances. Yes, I am a gleek and the weekly series holds the #2 spot on my list of favorite shows. Regardless of how the show’s storyline would carry over to the stage was mostly irrelevant to me. I just wanted to see and hear the talented cast in person. I left the event a very happy gleek, minus the salsa splattered on my white dress shirt from one clutzy fellow concert-goer. Now take that same show and put it on the big screen.  Will it carry the same song and dance one-two punch?

Interview with Actor Brendan Wayne – ‘Cowboys & Aliens’

Easily one of the most anticipated films due out this summer is none other than Cowboys & Aliens, starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. Also appearing in this awesome marriage of old west and sci-fi is none other than Brendan Wayne. Wayne, who is quickly tallying the westerns on his resume’, spoke candidly about his work on the film in addition to his other projects, life outside of movies and the history of acting in his family, including grandfather John Wayne. Unfortunately, a thunderstorm on my end wreaked havoc during the first few seconds of the interview, so you’ll notice an abrupt beginning. Nevertheless, Brendan saved the day dishing out his experiences on the upcoming blockbuster and other interesting avenues. Continue reading ‘Interview with Actor Brendan Wayne – ‘Cowboys & Aliens’’

Green Lantern Flickers Between Boredom & Excitement

I remember last year sitting outside the 6,000-seat capacity Hall H at the San Diego Convention Center. It was a cool, gray-skyed morning as the line of pedestrian traffic snaked around the dewy grass.  We all shared a common eagerness to experience the discussion panel of the Green Lantern. The almost-year since then has passed quickly and the Lantern Corp is upon us as Ryan Reynolds takes the famed oath, dons the ring and stars as the emerald hero!

Glee Live! In Concert!

What happens when you have the hottest musical/comedy show on television? You take your act on the road! Glee was created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, which, believe it or not, was originally intended to be a film. Murphy, however, had other ideas and eventually proposed Glee as a weekly TV show instead of a big screen production. With two seasons in the history books and an ever-growing fanbase, the only logical thing to do next was turn Glee the show into Glee Live!  In Concert!

X-Men: First Class – The Best Marvel Film Ever. Period.

No teasers in that title, eh? I debated back and forth in my mind, searching for some crafty heading for an article on the most recent Marvel Comics film. After wrestling with a few ideas, I said heck with it. Just call it like it is. I was amped sitting in my theater seat watching this tale unfold. Now let’s find out why this movie was just so damn good.

Platoon (Blu-ray Review)

Appropriate for Memorial Day here in the U.S. today is a Blu-ray review about a film looking at the Vietnam War.  Simply called Platoon, it’s not the project that earned Oliver Stone his first Academy Award, but it certainly didn’t fly under the radar either, garnering four of the little golden statues for directing, film editing, sound, and best picture. Now, a quarter of a century later, arguably the greatest Vietnam movie of all time is now available on Blu-ray.  The film actually comes in a DVD/Blu-ray combo pack, which is a bit puzzling.  I say get rid of the dvd and give me a digital copy instead (what am I supposed to do with a dvd??).  That aside, we’ve got one very important movie to review here.

Madagascar (Blu-ray Review)

The BBC has produced another nature program, and if it’s anything like its predecessors, it should be good.  However, let me start off straight away by saying this is not the animated movie of the same title. This Madagascar is as real as it gets, and coming from the BBC, offers yet another high quality presentation of nature in all its glory, as this time, we head to the east coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean where a certain island resides, called Madagascar.

The Roommate (Blu-ray Review)

Some called this film a strong parallel to 1992′s Single White Female. Since that film has yet to grace my viewing attention, I went into The Roommate with an open mind. The man calling the shots here is Danish director Christian E. Christiansen, more widely known for his works abroad than those here in North America. His talents were lauded by the creative minds behind The Roommate‘s script, so take that and bring in an aesthetically pleasing cast and you’ve got the makings of a strong hit, right?

‘Priest’ Offers Few Blessings

During a recent discussion with a like-minded comic book aficionado, my conversing counterpart referred to vampires as ‘cupcakes’, citing the popularity craze over both in mainstream media. Apparently cupcakes are the current hip dessert, and vampires, likewise, are the current hip supernatural flavor. With that in mind, the latest fang-bearing craze to arrive in the cinema is Priest starring Paul Bettany.  Bettany seems to be a magnet for being cast in religious films which include The Da Vinci Code and last year’s Legion.
