Mickey Prohaska (Kinnear) is a small-time insurance agent looking for a way to jump-start his business, reunite with his estranged wife (Thompson) and escape the frigid Wisconsin weather. This self-proclaimed master of spin believes that salesmanship is about selling a story — all he needs is a sucker willing to buy it.  He hits pay dirt with a lonely retired farmer (Arkin) who is sitting on something much bigger than an insurance commission.  But Mickey’s attempt to con the old man spins out of control when a nosy, unstable locksmith (Crudup) with a volatile temper dramatically ups the stakes, trapping him in a spiral of danger, deceit and double-crossing.

Synopsis

The walking art form, otherwise known as Kate Beckinsale, reprises her role as Selene as the original franchise resumes its continuity some six months after the events of the second film, Underworld: Evolution.  We are quickly introduced to the “Purge,” a time when the pesky humans have enacted a global military crusade to eradicate the world of vampires and lycans after mankind has learned of their existence, and worst of all…beautiful Selene has been both captured and exiled.  And before I go on let me get address the following.  Many naysayers of this fourth entry have complained about the involvement of the humans, but quite honestly, I love how they have shaken things up here.  I guess the same goes for how I love my humans in the Transformers franchise.  It just makes the film feel that much more grounded.  God…I know I’m going to get grilled for that statement.  Gerard has a four-letter acronym he likes to tell his haters, but I’ll spare the populous here.

Now let’s fast-forward 12 years ahead in time.  Are you still with me?  Grand!  That’s the spirit.  Those pesky humans are at it again as they are seen doing nothing but gloating and who can blame them with the stats they claim to have achieved.  I’d be proud of them too…if they were true.  You see, the humans claim they have exterminated 95% of the vampire race.  Now that’s quite an accomplishment.  Don’t you think so?  However, that previous accomplishment doesn’t sound as far fetched as this next one does.  The humans also boast about how they believe the lycans to be all but extinct.  Come on!  Really?  That’s why we fail people…as a race.

You didn’t think Selene could stay in exile for 13 years, did you?  Heck no!  She is “awakened” and that’s when the real a$$ kicking begins.  And quite honestly, I think that’s why I really had fun with this movie.  If you wanted action and hardcore violence, then you came to the wrong place.  Selene takes NO prisoners are she ruthlessly slays and extracts her vengeance on anyone that seemingly gets in her way all the while she suffers from haunting visions, believed to be some kind of link between her and her vampire-lycan hybrid lover, Michael Corvin.  However, not everyone gets annihilated by Selene.  She does quickly develop a soft spot for a young girl named Eve (India Eisley).  Hmm…I wonder why?  I guess you will have to watch and find out, won’t you?

It’s basically like this.  Underworld: Awakening feels like an Underworld film, but maybe…just maybe…not so much as the previous three do.  To me…it has a very British vibe to it.  BUT…I would dare to compare this entry more so in line with the mindless numbing action of a Resident Evil picture, rather than the savage and charming qualities of the three previous Underworld entries.  Yes I said it.  I am a huge fan of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans.  And quite honestly, I know people who have loved this fourth one and also legions of fans that have absolutely despised it.  I guess you will have to be the judge.  Judge for yourself, yo!

You want to hear something way cool?  Of course you do!  Underworld: Awakening is one of the first movies to be shot using a RED EPIC digital camera in the 3D format.  I know!  Amazing, huh?  And it’s no surprise that since the mass critics hated, I liked it.  LOL.  But let’s be honest.  It more than doubled it’s money at the box office so all’s not a loss and I’m pretty sure you can take this to the bank and cash it that we have not seen the last of the Underworld series on the big screen.  And that’s fine by me.  As long as Kate Beckinsale keeps looking as fine as she does, I’ll keep buying a ticket and the resulting Blu-ray copy.  You can surely take that to the bank and cash it!

Underworld: Awakening stars Kate Beckinsale (duh), Sandrine Holt, India Eisley, Theo James, Michale Ealy, Charles Dance, Stephen Rea, and a digitally superimposed facial likeness of Scott Speedman.  And here’s an interesting fact times two.  Underworld: Awakening is the first film in 2012 to pass the $100 million mark worldwide and it is also the highest grossing film in the Underworld series, both domestically and worldwide.  So tell me, naysayers…how do you like those apples?  LOL.  Now let’s talk about Blu-ray apples, shall we?

Alright, so you don’t like the movie you say.  Well, there’s no way you can fault this film’s fine 1080p MPEG-4 AVC transfer.  Underworld: Awakening is framed in a 2.40:1 aspect ration and it looks utterly simply bone chilling…in a good way.  LOL.  The stylistic qualities of the first three films remain unchanged here.  Selene’s bright blue eyes, although I can’t usually take my eyes off her um…, are the most vibrant part of the presentation throughout its runtime.  The cold and sterile hues perfectly complement the movie’s hostile, desolate and violent tone.  Despite it’s limited colors, the transfer features exquisite clarity and sharpness.  Fine detail is prominent and best of all…you won’t find any unwanted visual distractions, specks or noise.  As Kiss always said, “You wanted the best.  You got the best.”  You’ll definitely want to sink your vampire or lycan teeth into this one.

Audio  

Do you hear that?  Neither can I.  I think I’m deaf after subjecting myself and succumbing to this bombastic DTS-HD MA 7.1 lossless soundtrack.  Wow!  Things that make you go hmm.  This soundtrack is huge.  It will definitely have you looking for the remote with its over the top, aggressive nature.  The heavy volume is perfectly balanced.  It puts you right in the middle of all the action.  It’s virtual immersion at its finest.  Guns and explosions seem to go off and fire at you from every corner of your listening environment and best of all, the dialog, thanks be to God, never gets lost in the shuffle.  It’s always strong and understandable.  You can’t go wrong here folks.  This is what Blu-ray dreams are made of.  Move over King Kong, there’s a new Blu-ray beast in town.  Underworld: Awakening’s audio delivers the goods!  There’s no doubt about that.  It’s my undisputed champion this year.

Even I have to admit, there’s a pretty nice little package of special features to be found here.  Underwworld: Awakening features not only a commentary track, but also a picture-in-picture experience too.  Who could possibly ask for anything more?  I can, that’s who.  And luckily, I do get more.  Let’s move pass the chit chat, and focus on the goods.  Here we go!

• Fillmakers’ Commentary – The producers, directors and the visual effects supervisor all speak about the making of the film and the inherit challenges that go with the territory.  I actually found this one to be quite entertaining.  Check it out!

• Selene Rises (HD, 12:14) – With a name like this, what do you think this one’s about?  You guessed it!  The return of Kate Beckinsale and the um…costumes.

• Casting the Future of Underworld (HD, 12:33) – This one spends some time with actors Theo James and India Eisley, as well as a discussion about potential sequels.  You have to love the sound of that!

• Resuming the Action (HD, 8:52) – All things stunt work and 3D can be found here.

• Building a Better Lycan (HD, 10:20) – This one’s all about the werewolf visuals.  Oh yeah, baby!

• Awakening a Franchise, Building a Better World (HD, 18:53) – This one is really just more of the same making of and visual effects, unfortunately.  Yada yada yada.

• Music Video (HD, 3:25) – This features the music video of “Heavy Prey” by Flyleaf’s Lacey Sturm and Geno Lenardo.

• Blooper Reel (HD, 3:21) – Laugh!  I command you!

• Cracking the Underworld: Picture-in-Picture Experience – How can you not watch this?

• UV Digital Copy (SD) – One word…BOO!

Summary  

So there you have it…another Blu-ray review under my belt and another demo/reference quality Blu-ray title to show off to friends and family.  With a story some love to hate and others that absolutely just can’t get enough of, Underworld: Awakening is a win-win in the audio and video departments and #4 on my list of the way I rank my liking of the four films in the franchise.  Can you guess which one I like best?  It’s not hard.  Fans of the original trilogy shouldn’t hesitate in picking this up, but newcomers may want to give the first three a quick watch so they know what they are getting themselves into, an @$$ kicking good time, if you don’t mind me saying.  But that’s for you to decide.  If you are undecided, then in the legendary Nike words…just do it!  Pre-order it now!  Have at it vampire and werewolf fans!

Film  

The year was 1991.  I was still under my parents’ Blockbuster membership, and unfortunately, still under their roof.  I could only watch “these kind” of movies late at night while the padres were sleeping for obvious reasons (they weren’t as cool and open minded as I was in my youth).  I remember this Truth or Dare (the bottle BJ) as fondly as I do the likes of those other late night rental viewings of Basic Instinct (the legs crossing) or another Madonna classic, Body of Evidence (the candle wax).  Hmm.  I wonder when that one is coming out on the Blu-ray format?  I can’t wait!  But I digress as usual.  LOL.

2012 is shaping up to be the year of Madonna.  Let’s ignore the fact that she is fresh off her recent Golden Globe win for Best Original Song for her directorial feature film, W.E., and that she also previously won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) for her role as Eva Peron in Evita.  What about her being named as one of TIME’s “25 Most Powerful Women in the Past Century” and countless other accolades?  Who cares about them?  Madonna is so much more!  This year alone, she is making her way back into the spotlight hot off the trails of her Super Bowl half-time performance, an upcoming new album (March 26^th), tour (which is actually coming to Cleveland…hell freezes over once again) and the launch of “Truth or Dare” lifestyle brand.

So getting back to business here, Madonna: Truth or Dare chronicles her life during the 1990 Blond Ambition Tour.  The film was actually well received by the critics and did exceptionally well at the box office for a documentary.  At the time, it was the highest-grossing documentary of all time with a worldwide gross of over $29 million.  It is now number eight.  Still, that’s not bad at all for a film most people are probably laughing at our shunning me for reviewing.  And interestingly enough, the original working title of this doc was Truth or Dare: On the Road, Behind the Scenes and In Bed With Madonna.

The documentary pretty much covers it all from her steamy and controversial simulated masturbation during the performance of “Like a Virgin” to her serenading her father on stage for his birthday.  We are treated to raw (very raw and vulgar at times) behind the scenes footage of Madonna, life with her dancers and everyone else in her life (brother, family friends, Kevin Costner, Antonio Banderas and her entire entourage).  From her friendship/relationship with Warren Beatty and humorous shunning of Kevin Costner to a doctor examining her sore, strained vocal cords, not much is left out here…even bathroom pampering and courtesy flushes.  If you are a Madonna fan, then make no mistake…this title is a MUST-OWN on the Blu-ray format.

But honestly, despite being a huge Madonna fan, I can get bored pretty fast while watching documentaries.  You hear that Shakira?  Even you can bore me if you don’t shake it enough.  I would much prefer a straight concert video or at least more concert footage intertwined within here.  However, beggars can’t be choosers.  I just have to suck it up and be happy with what I have.  I could think of many worse documentaries one could watch.  After all, this is Madonna!  Madonna fans across the world…the Queen of Pop is home again on the Blu-ray format for a second time.  Now…when is The Confessions Tour coming out on Blu?  Huh?  Huh?  God…I can’t wait for that!

Just in case you were wondering, the following concert footage is contained within the 2-hour long documentary.  We are treated to “Oh Father,” “Like a Virgin,” “Express Yourself,” “Holiday,” “Live to Tell,” “Vogue” and “Keep it Together.”  There’s a small excerpt of fan favorite “Like a Prayer,” but sadly, not nearly enough…at least for me.

Now if you are still with me, let’s take a look at why you are here and why you are still reading this…the A/V vitals.

Video  

This is a tough one.  How do you judge the video quality of something that is supposed to intentionally look gritty, grainy and found footage-like?  I guess if that is what you are going for, you’re a victor here.  But let’s be honest.  The reason for owning the Blu-ray format is because you want the best and most pristine picture possible and as a former owner of this film on both the VHS and DVD formats, I believe you’re getting the absolute best presentation here, albeit not a pretty one.  This 1080p, 16×9 widescreen (1.85:1) encode is packed with all the nutritional grain your body can ever handle.  This is what dreams are made of when making sandwiches.  You’ve been warned.  It’s not the prettiest looking Blu-ray presentation, but it’s the best this behind-the-scenes documentary has ever looked.  Like the old saying goes, despite how much I hate it, it is what it is.

Audio  

Again, I had to judge this Lionsgate title for what it brings to the table, which is a raw and unobtrusive look behind the scenes with Madonna, in her most private and ambitious of moments.  It’s not Dark Knight, King Kong or even a full-length, loud and obnoxious Beyonce concert.  It’s a Madonna documentary.  That being said, I think it sounded great, for what it’s worth.  The 5.1 DTS Master Audio surround track always kept the dialog levels clear, intelligible and engaging and the concert performances booming and kicking.  I just wish it had more concert footage to show off.  Dammit!

Extras  

Sad to say, Madonna is not a winner in every category, namely with the almost complete lack of extras here.  I only give the golden goose egg when there’s absolutely nothing to be found on a disc, so luckily, Madonna: Truth or Dare narrowly escaped that honor.  Search high and low and all that you will find here are two horrible looking, Standard Definition theatrical trailers.  Savior it!  That’s all you get!

Summary  

So there you have it.  If you are a huge, openly admitted Madonna fan like myself, and raw, natural and inhibitive moments are your thing, then this is the Blu-ray disc for you.  If you’re just a casual fan of the “Material Girl” or mainly curious because of the controversial nature and position it once held back in the early 90’s, then maybe a rental is more suited and suggested for yourself.  I don’t want to take away all your money in this tough economy.  However, if you are planning on buying this, please help support our site by clicking here to pre-order the eighth highest grossing documentary film of all-time.  It’s never looked or sounded this good before, so what are you waiting for?  Pre-order your copy today!

THE GRAPES OF WRATH

Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel “The Grapes of Wrath” by author John Steinbeck, the eponymous film is directed by four-time Academy Award winner John Ford and stars Henry Fonda, John Carradine, and Jane Darwell. The film won two Academy Awards including Best Director (John Ford) and Best Actress (Jane Darwell). THE GRAPES OF WRATH was nominated for seven Academy Awards total including Best Picture and Best Actor (Henry Fonda).

Following a prison term he served for manslaughter, Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) returns to find his family homestead overwhelmed by weather and the greed of the banking industry. With little work potential on the horizon of the Oklahoma dust bowls, the entire family packs up and heads for the promised land – California. But the arduous trip and harsh living conditions they encounter offer little hope, and family unity proves as daunting a challenge as any other they face.

ZORBA THE GREEK

Starring Academy Award Winner Anthony Quinn (Lawrence of Arabia, Viva Zapata!, and Lust for Life) and Academy Award Winner Lila Kedrova (The Kremlin Letter), ZORBA THE GREEK is the winner of three Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress (Lila Kedrova), Best Cinematography, and Best Art Direction. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards in all, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director.

On the Greek isle of Crete, Basil (Alan Bates), a shy inhibited writer from England is befriended by Zorba (Anthony Quinn) a boisterous peasant with an astonishing love for life. When Zorba agrees to work at Basil’s abandoned mine, it is the beginning of a lesson for the young man as he gradually moves from an observer of the world to a participant. This acclaimed classic co-stars Irene Paps and Lila Kedrova in an Oscar winning performance.

Film  

Before we begin, I thought it to be important to pay homage to the American classic and talk about it factually for a few moments.  After all, it’s not every day that a modest Blu-ray, and pretty good-looking, reviewer from Ohio gets to gab about such a culturally significant film.  What say you?  Well then again, you have no choice in the matter.

Michael Curtiz directed the 1942 romantic drama.  It stars the legendary Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, Conrad Veidt, Peter Lorre, Dooley Wilson and Sydney Greenstreet.  Writers Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein and Howard Koch all received credit for the screenplay.  The film went on to win not one, but three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and as I said before, it consistently ranks as one of the greatest films of all time.  I’m not sure how writer Gregg Senko feels about this “statement,” but it’s written everywhere so it has to be true, right?

Casablanca has seen it all; from tributes and parodies, sequel ideas (novels, screenplays, etc…) and even colorization to an HD DVD release in 2006 and two previous Blu-ray editions before Warner Bros. put the film in temporary moratorium in 2011.  Heck, there were even two very short-lived prequel television series that paid homage to the film.  The one even had my man Ray Liotta in it.  Very cool!  I love history lessons!

The film was actually based on an unproduced play called Everybody Comes to Rick’s.  Warner Bros. decided to buy the rights for $20,000.  That might not sound like a lot, but back in the day, well you get the picture.  My father once squabbled with the Ford dealer and refused delivery of his brand new 1965 Mustang just because the salesman wouldn’t lower the price $50.  It kind of puts things in perspective when you think of it.  Darn inflation!  I wish I could squabble over only $50 nowadays.  LOL.  That would be a good problem to have.

So with that history lesson now finally behind us all, it comes down to only this.  “Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

Warner Bros. bills Casablanca as “The most romantic movie of all time.”  I don’t know if I would go that far, but that’s just me.  I will agree with them when they say it’s “The most beautiful it’s ever been.”  I can’t argue that.  After all, we’re talking about the Blu-ray format, folks.  Stripped down to its barest structure, yes, Casablanca is very much a love story.  Set during World War II, Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) is a man torn between two worlds (I can definitely understand and appreciate this), his selfish love for Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) and doing what’s right.  That’s called virtue.  I hate these kinds of decisions, don’t you?  Rick must choose between the love of his life, a woman he seemingly just can’t let go of despite the years and what she has done to him (rest assured that we learn this from nicely furnished flashbacks), and helping her and her Czech resistance leader husband, Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), escape the city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis.  Indiana Jones can’t do everything himself, you know?

Ugh.  So where do I begin with my personal thoughts?  There’s so much to talk about, but I don’t want to bore you all.  First of all, having been the first time I have seen this classic, I was very much impressed by the film’s production quality.  The details that went into every scene were quite remarkable, not to mention the gorgeous cinematography of Arthur Edeson.   Rick’s upscale nightclub and gambling saloon, Rick’s Café Americain, reminded me of what Lucas later did to re-populate Mos Eisley in his Episode IV Special Edition digital touchups.  He should have taken cues from Casablanca in the very beginning.  Rick’s saloon was always buzzing with a mixed clientele of French, Italian and Nazi partygoers and a wretched hive of scum and villainy (of course I’m talking about the Nazi officials here).  Rick professes that he is neutral in all this, but viewers beware, Rick is more than meets the eye.  Humphrey Bogart portrays him after all.  You know he has an ace in the hole and director Michael Curtiz utilizes Bogart’s talents effectively well here as he exposes the fact that there’s a deeper confliction going on within Bogart’s character than he initially lets on when we are first introduced to him in Act 1.  Perhaps this was one of the greatest strengths of Casablanca to me.  I’m not going to go on record and say it’s the greatest film ever made or most romantic, but I will say the following.  As Gerard Iribe blurted out on the Why So Blu text chat line, it’s a masterpiece.  If you have never seen Casablanca before, as was the case with myself, you need to.  It will teach you structure.  It will allow you to craft deep characters.  It will also show you how to build sets.   Okay, it won’t show you, but you now have an intricate example of how someone did it right back in the 40’s.  And most importantly, it will instruct you on how to make everything cohesively work from the interaction of your main protagonist and antagonist to every single background character buzzing around the seemingly huge saloon environment that manages to blossom in every scene with a life of its own, like a beautiful tulip sprouting overnight in the perfect spring-like conditions.  It’s for these very reasons, that I rate Casablanca so high in the film score category.  It’s not going to topple my love and huge admiration for modern day flicks I love such as Fight Club or The Dark Knight, but I know when to take a bow and lay down a token of my appreciation.  This is one of those humble times.

So with that rant above finally over, there’s no doubt that Casablanca is a cinematic masterpiece, a blast from the past so to speak, we can’t argue that.  We could go on and on and pick it apart, but this isn’t a film class or even an Out Now with Aaron and Abe podcast .  This is a Blu-ray review.  I think I was one of the last people alive who have never seen this gem, so let’s skip the formalities and get down to why we are really all here.  What does it look and sound like on the Blu-ray format?  And what the heck is in that big box it comes in?  You’re in luck.  I have those and answers and more below.  Read on!

“The most romantic movie of all time” bows on Blu-ray the third time around with over 13 hours of Special Features and nearly one-hour of never-before-seen content and collectible memorabilia.  The bonus materials are spread across three discs, two Blu-rays and one DVD.   We all know how valuable these are to movie aficionados so let’s waste little time with the chitchat here in this paragraph and start dissecting these disc-by-disc.  What say you?  Come on!

Video  

If you look on the packaging here, you will notice something really special.  Did you find it?  I will give you a hint?  It begins with the number 4.  You see it?  It says this is an all-new 4K scan and remaster.  Hell yeah!  Now that excites me!  Does it do anything for you?  I hope so.  The image looks glorious.  I can’t believe I’m even saying this, but I wouldn’t even want to see the bastardized attempt at the colorization here.  This is breathtaking as is with the black and white 1080p AVC MPEG-4 encode transfer framed in a 1.37:1 aspect ratio.  The contrast range is out of the world here.  The black levels are inky, just like watching my favorite old Sin City and the shadow delineations are spot on.  Watching this makes me feel like I built a time machine out of a Delorean and I have been transported back to the 1940’s, minus Einstein the dog, and watched this on the silver screen.  This is how I imagined it would have looked.  How can I rate this anything but a score of a 5?  Rhetorically…I can’t!  Kudos Warner!

Audio  

For the first time EVER…Casablanca receives a lossless soundtrack, albeit only a DTS-HD MA 1.0.  Although with a flick as old as this, what can you really do with the audio?  More importantly…what more can you conceivably ask for?  It’s not like its King Kong or Godzilla.  Right?  I’m fine with what I heard.  I never once sneered at the screen in disgust for lack of surround.  The dialog was always crisp, clear and intelligible and the music always sounded triumphant.  Again, I ask you.  What more can you ask for from a movie made in the 40’s?  And the sound effects…they aren’t bad either.  I said it before and I will say it again…I was extremely impressed and overall satisfied with the production quality of this Blu-ray release.  I was so dreading that I would hate this film because of its “oldness” (I know I’m ignorant…sorry), but I was gravely mistaken.  And I’m so happy I was.  I appreciated this even more!

Extras  

Before I begin, I have to go on record and say that it’s very rare for me to give high marks to supplemental packages, but when you have a huge set like this, it’s hard to not take notice.  In addition to everything I’m about to drop on you and list below, the box set boasts collectible packaging, a 60-page book with production notes, rare set drawings (these are the most fascinating part of the book, in my opinion) and behind-the-scenes photos; a 1942 French theatrical mini-poster and 4 drink coasters (not DVDs) in a keepsake box (perhaps my favorite items in this collection).  You always need drink coasters, right?  Now we’re talking!

Blu-ray Disc #1

• Michael Curtiz: The Greatest Director You Never Heard Of (HD, 37 min.) – Doesn’t the title just say it all?  LOL.  But seriously…Here we have a documentary by Gary Leva which features Steven Spielgberg and other notable filmmakers talking about the life and work of Curtiz.
• Casablanca: An Unlikely Classic (NEVER BEFORE AVAILABLE, HD, 35 min.) – Film historians and filmmakers like Steven Spielberg for example discuss how Casablanca became one of the greatest movies of all time.  This one was of particular interest to me because it’s always interesting to hear how one, or many in this case, can explain how a film like Casablanca can be held in such high regards in American cinema history, while at the same time, speaking for the masses.
• Introduction by Lauren Bacall (SD, 2 min.) – She really just speaks about the appeal of the film.  Skip it!
• 2 Separate Commentaries: Roger Ebert and Film Historian Rudy Behlmer – Does this one really need an explanation?  Both men talk about the cinematic history and legacy of the film we are all here reading about.  Being an Ebert fan, I particularly enjoyed this.
• Warner Night at the Movies (NEVER BEFORE AVAILABLE, SD, 51 min.) – This newsreel-like featurette spawns a total of six pre-show entertainment pieces just like it would have been shown had you seen this theatrically in the 40’s.  This makes me feel very old.  The six pieces include the Now Voyager theatrical trailer, a 1942 newsreel about the threat of World War II, the short film Vaudeville Days, Merrie Melodies cartoon The Bird Came C.O.D., The Squawkin’ Hawk and The Dover Boys at Pimento University.  As a side note, each of these segments can be viewed individually too.
• Great Performances: Bacall on Bogart (SD, 83 min.) – This is a documentary on Humphrey Bogart.  If you don’t know much about the man, there’s not a better place to learn from then here.  Get going!
• You Must Remember This: A Tribute to Casablanca (SD, 35 min.) – This is a short doc that examines different views and takes on the legendary film.  I could have lived without this one, but perhaps you may find it interesting.
• As Time Goes By: The Children Remember (SD, 12 min.) – Stephen Bogart and Pia Lindstrom recall their childhood and parent’s fame.
• Deleted Scenes (SD) – There are a total of two deleted scenes here.  If these are your cup of coffee in the morning, then by all means, have at them!
• Outtakes (SD) – Again, not much to see here, but there’s a short montage of outtakes if you want to sit through them.  Your choice!
• Who Holds Tomorrow? (SD, 18 min.) -
• Cartoon (SD, 8 min.) – There’s a vintage Looney Tunes cartoon parody of the film found here called Carrotblanca.  With a 5.1 soundtrack and Rick as Bugs Bunny…what’s not to love?!
• Audio Scoring Staging Sessions (NEVER BEFORE AVAILABLE) – We kind of have two for the price of one here, so to speak.  The “Scoring Stage Sessions” audio (an alternate version of “Knock on Wood,” an alternate takes of “As Time Goes By, Parts One and Two,” a “Dat’s What Noah Done” outtake, and performances of “Rick Sees Isla” and “At La Belle Aurore”) can be found here as well as the April 26, 1943 “Lady Esther Screen Guild Theater Radio Broadcast” version of the film.  Wow!  That was a moutful!
• 11/19/47 Vox Pop Radio Broadcast (NEVER BEFORE AVAILABLE) – This audio transmission is titled Streamlined for 1947.   It includes the November 19, 1947 broadcast as well as a behind-the-scenes listen with a Jack Warner interview.

Blu-ray Disc #2

• You Must Remember This: The Warner Bros. Story (SD, 289 mins.) – Now here’s why this section gets a score of a 5.  Did you see that?  289 mamoth minutes!  Wow!  This five-hour long documentary is brought to us by director Richard Schickel and narrator Clint Eastwood.  They talk about the rise and records of yours truly…Warner Bros.
• The Brothers Warner (HD, 94 min.) – This one is more of a documentary that takes a look at the motion pictures studios and how far they have come.
• Jack L. Warner: The Last Mogul Documentary (SD, 58 min.) – This one is a celebration of all things Jack, a man who many hail as the one responsible for bringing Warner Bros. into the future.  Who are you to argue with that assertion?

DVD Disc #3

• The Movie (SD) – It’s just what the title implies.  It’s the newly restored classic brilliantly downgraded for those long trips in the mini-van or if you look at it a different way, it provides yet another commercially viable drink coaster.

Summary  

Remember when I used that “start of a beautiful friendship” quote above?  Well, I truly think it’s applicable here.  If you have never seen this before, you need to.  You call yourself a movie aficionado?  Hah!  You’re nothing unless you have seen and can intelligently speak about Casablanca (I’m kidding of course…or am I?).  And Warner’s 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition of Casablanca gives you ample ammunition to call yourself a true movie connoisseur.  It has a brand new 4K scan, lossless audio and a slew of special features that will keep you busy and drooling for hours on end.  Can you think of a reason why this should not be in your Blu-ray collection?  I cannot.  Do yourself a favor and look beyond that price tag.  You NEED drink coasters to protect your precious furniture when watching movies, don’t you?   You know you want them!  Well then…what are you waiting for?!  Casablanca: 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition hits retail shelves on March 27^th, but you can pre-order yours today here.  Do it!

Synopsis
