So I guess before we go any further we should clear the air and talk a little bit about the Tim Sullivan directed segment known as “I Was a Teenage Werebear” within the gut wrenchingly hysterical, totally offensive (and I mean that in a good way for us fans) horror/comedy anthology Chillerama.  The segment is both a musical and a spoof of Rebel Without a Cause, Grease and The Twilight Saga.  Tim talks openly about his love for musicals, and most importantly one of my all-time favorites, Moulin Rouge, in my candid audio interview with Adam Rifkin and him here.  The segment is set in the 60’s and erotically explores a teenager’s curiosity with a pack of werebears, nevertheless led by the handsome and rugged bad boy of the clan, Mr. Anton Troy.  And guess what?  Today I’m lucky enough to have the opportunity to sit down with the leader of the pack, Anton Troy.  So let’s get started (my questions are in bold below)!

Good day Anton.  Thanks for stopping by today.  How’s it going?

Doin’ peachy, thank you.

So tell me a little more about your character Talon in “I Was a Teenage Werebear,” how you became involved in the Chillerama segment and just what the hell is a werebear?

We could have an entire interview structured around this one question—thanks for starting me off easy Brian… The bad boy, the brute, the misunderstood angsty, well-intentioned loner kid with heart that could probably still kick your ass—that’s Talon.  I became affiliated with Chillerama totally by fate I believe.  I met Scream Queens 2 winner Gabby West at a small gathering of mutual friends.  Gabby was already slated to play Peggy Lou after her work in Saw and her working relationship with Tim on Scream Queens.  So several months passed and out of the blue I wake up to this voice mail from our mutual friend saying “Gabby recommended you for an audition TODAY with Tim Sullivan… oh and by the way they want you to sing, dance and read for two parts, can you make it?”  I was TERRIFIED as I was like sing?  WHAT, today, like 5 hours from now, serious?  But how are you gonna say no right!  So evidently they were open to recommendations as Tim being the discerning director that he is just could not find the right bad boy for the job and deadline was approaching.  Needless to say we hit it off, they auditioned the hell out of me and now here I am.  As far as Werebears go, look up the definition of Bear—no not like Yogi and combine that with Rob Halford and a pinch of Lon Chaney and there you go.

Gotcha!  Speaking of director Tim Sullivan, I had the pleasure to meet, interview and hang out with the man.  He’s a real class act.  You’d be hard pressed to meet anyone nicer in Hollywood.  So with that being said, how was it working for the man on the set?

Tim is very passionate about his art and he is also someone with a definite voice that resonates throughout his work, definitely not a drone or a wishy washy personality.  He’s incredibly considerate of your feelings on set and always took the time to make me feel comfortable about what was going on even under pressure.  He knows what he wants in a shot and was very gracious in allowing me the freedom to allow Talon to evolve into something special.  It really was an evolution as Tim ended up doing a lot of re-writes on the set for Talon simply because we were coming up with so many fantastic ideas that weren’t envisioned in the original script.  Talon started out as sort of a comedic villain and then ended up being more of an anti-hero.  I am very grateful to Tim for noticing the potential of the character to have more depth and then making me such a part of that creation.

Well, as I said before, you gotta love Tim Sullivan!  Since Comic-Con, have there been any plans finalized as of yet as to exactly where and when the drive-in Chillerama tour will take place?  Please say Cleveland, OH!

They have not even told me yet—but the good news is they have announced the official Blu-Ray release to be Nov 29^th, and rumor has it that you can even pre-order copies!  I suggest signing up at www.chilleramafilm.com for more details.

That’s awesome news about the Blu-ray release date.  I just looked online and sure enough the pre-order link is up on Amazon today!  So tell me more about you.  What makes Anton Troy tick?  How did you get involved in acting and what do you like to do for fun or to unwind?  We all have our vices, right?

I come from an entertainment family really—My Grandfather was a rodeo cowboy and Hollywood stuntman who did all the westerns and doubled such greats as James Cagney and my Mother was a professional mime and children’s entertainer so I guess you could say I kind of grew up in a dressing room.  My Father was non-existent and acting became an outlet to express my feelings in a constructive way. I get high off of the rush of being in sync with another actor in a scene—that point when the connection becomes magic.  I love interacting with people and spending time with friends, but my alone time is very important to me especially during the creative process.

I have to agree with you 110% on that alone time statement.  What’s next on your plate in the entertainment world?  I saw on your IMDB page that you also have a short called Grapple in post-production and a film I need to check out one day called Filth to Ashes, Flesh to Dust.

Grapple is a great little comedy I did about High School wrestling and Filth to Ashes is a 70’s style slasher film directed by my talented friend Mr. Paul Morrell.  We will see where the wind takes me…

The following is a three-part question.  I’m notorious for these.  I do apologize.  Are there any particular genres you want to try doing in the future?  And what about directors and actors?  Are there certain ones you would love to work with some day?

It has always been a dream to work with Clint Eastwood, I have always been mesmerized by his level of cool. Darren Aronofsky is a gritty favorite, James Cameron rocks and I think I would be perfect for a Tarantino film.  Would be a dream to act with Michael Caine or Gary Oldman and of course I hope I get to do more with my immensely talented pals, Tim Sullivan, Adam Green, Joe Lynch and Adam Rifkin.  The talent of all these men is a great source for my inspiration.  I have done a lot of comedy, but would love to get opportunities to do drama, action and thrillers.

I couldn’t agree with you more on the Chillerama 4-man brain trust.  So I have to ask you…what are some of your all-time favorite films and actors out there?  It’s always kind of cool to know who or what has influenced people’s career choices in life.

My taste is so vast—I love the quiet strength of Russell Crowe, the presence of Brando, vulnerability of James Dean, darkness of Johnny Depp but I also own more Schwarzenegger films than one should probably have!  High Plains Drifter is my favorite Eastwood film, A Beautiful Mind touches my heart and Mickey Rourke’s performance in The Wrestler resonates with me on a soul level.  Robocop is an all time favorite and I love misunderstood anti-hero archetypes like Mel Gibson in Payback.

For fans of yours reading this or any aspiring actors out there, do you have any words of wisdom for them about getting into the Hollywood scene and getting your name out there?

First of all make sure you are getting into acting for the right reasons, simply wanting to be famous will not sustain you when your broke and no one cares who you are, it has to be a passion or rather an obsession.  Be nice to EVERYONE as you never know who someone is and where you might get that break.  Take the time to learn the skills to become excellent at what you do, entertainment is a business and should be treated as such and I recommend all would be film actors read Michael Caine’s book Acting In Film.

Alright…what else should your fans and our readers know about you?  What matters most in life to you?

Embedded and linked below is an interview, which took place during the busy time that was San Diego Comic Con 2011.  Myself and a few others received the opportunity to interview all of the main stars involved with the production of Bellflower.  The participants included the previously mentioned writer/director/star Evan Glodell, as well as stars Jessie Wiseman, Tyler Dawson, Rebekah Brandes, and Vincent Grashaw.  The conversation was a fun discussion that goes over many elements of the film, including its origins, what went into the making of the film, the casting and scripting process, and what Medusa meant to everyone.  The interview lasts about 20 minutes and is uncut and uncensored (towards the end there is a bit more language…instigated by me).  The audio quality is not as pristine as I would have liked, but it should still be clear enough, so I hope people will enjoy the interview and be sure to check out Bellflower, which will be rolling out in limited release during the rest of this summer.

As I said, Immortals is the upcoming fantasy epic, set within the realms of Greek mythology.  Here is what Comic Con’s programming had to say about the film and the panel:

Relativity Media: Immortals— Visionary director Tarsem Singh transports viewers in this epic tale of treachery, vengeance, and destiny in this stylish and visually spectacular 3D action adventure. The brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion and his murderous Heraklion (Mickey Rourke) rampage across Greece in search of the long lost Bow of Epirus. With the invincible Bow, the king will be able to overthrow the Gods of Olympus and become the undisputed master of his world. As village after village is obliterated, a stonemason named Theseus vows to avenge his mother, who was killed in one of Hyperion’s brutal raids. With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of followers and embraces his destiny in a final, desperate battle for the future of humanity. I have also already stated that director Tarsem Singh was a large reason behind my anticipation for Immortals.  For those not familiar with this man, Tarsem is an award winning commercial and music video director, who has gone on to direct a couple theatrical films as well.  These films include The Cell and The Fall.  Both films have very striking imagery, but I particularly enjoy The Fall, which was shot in over 20 different countries, financed mostly by Tarsem, himself, and contains no CGI, despite the surreal look of the film.  Getting a chance to see what Tarsem can do with a big budget studio film, while still being allowed to embrace his own stylistic qualities is quite intriguing to me.  It was noted by Tarsem that the trailers for the film may be pushing a film slightly different than the actual product, as he believes the film has a darker tone than is suggested.  The producers on the panel certainly seemed to be quite pleased with what Tarsem had to offer, as they referred to the look of the film as if it were in “Tarsem Vision”.

Shortly after the panel began, we were shown a new, extended and very R-rated trailer in 3D.  In my notes I put, “very cool and bloody,” which is certainly the reaction that still comes to mind.  I don’t like to keep pointing back to 300 (a film I do like a lot), but fans of it will certainly feel right at home with Immortals and fans of epic fantasy action or Greek Myth stories should feel the same as well.  Knowing that the film was shot with 3D cameras, I was impressed with the imagery that I saw, which did a lot to expand the depth of field and play around with the massive scope that this film presents, such as massive tidal waves or Theseus using his magical bow.

While Mickey Rourke was not present, it was cool to see the rest of the cast on the panel.  In particular, future Man of Steel star, Henry Cavill (the lead in Immortals) was present, showing enough enthusiasm about this film, while keeping a tight lid about anything Superman related.  It did not hurt to see the beautiful Freida Pinto fielding questions about the film as well.  Not being knowledgeable at all about Twilight, I am not sure what to say about the presence of Kellan Lutz, beyond the fact that the ladies in the crowd certainly seemed to love him.  Overall, aside from Stephen Dorff, who seemed to be too overwhelmed by Comic Con’s Hall H to get more involved on a fun level, the panel seemed to be having a lot of fun together.

Aside from the basic panel Q&A, the other big thing that happened at this panel was the large action sequence, which was shown twice (mainly because it’s awesome).  This seen featured a handful of the gods in this film entering a massive room and facing off against a bunch of mud covered creatures.  Lots of action ensued, with many forms of weapons-based fighting and dismemberment.  It was an impressive sequence that appropriately showed off the stylized blood-letting that is going to be seen by all upon this film’s November release.  The action was reminiscent of other action spectacles, such as (once again) 300 as well as the video game series God of War of all things, but still had a slick and striking feel of its own.  There was a sense of scale, which was quite impressive, as were the additional details about Tarsems’s way of building scenes, which very much involved practical sets and not just CG backgrounds.  The whole sequence was quite impressive and has me more excited for the film’s eventual release.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Taking place on Saturday, during Comic Con, the panel for this exclusive sneak peak was held in one of the larger rooms in the Convention Center, once you take away both Hall H and Ballroom 20, the largest of all the presentation rooms.  While it may not have seemed to be the biggest draw compared to other highly anticipated panels, the amount of energy in the room suggested otherwise, as the panel was packed with devoted fans of the series.  Here is how Comic Con’s program described this presentation:

Finally! Nickelodeon: The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra: Exclusive First Look— Creator team Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, co-executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos, supervising producer Ki-Hyun Ryu, and composing team Ben Wynn and Jeremy Zuckerman give an exclusive sneak peek at the continuation of this element-bending saga. Moderated by Megan Casey, executive in charge for Nickelodeon.

Once all of the panel participants were on stage and the cheering died down, the announcement of a first look at the trailer for the new season (posted at the bottom) only caused cheering to start back up immediately.  The trailer played and everyone was ecstatic over the new footage.  Here are some of the noticeable details I found in the trailer shown:  Korra is a female character and the main focus of this new season.  She has a number of new enemies to face, friends to help her, and animals to aid her in her travels (including a polar bear dog).  The animation looks great and is noticeably presented in HD and in widescreen, a format not previously seen in the series.  The action shown is well choreographed, riveting in the small moments seen, and connected by the wonderful score, which looks to be right in line with the first three seasons.  There also seems to be an added level of CG to the series, in order to push the scope of the series even further.  Finally, the reveal of a masked nemesis closes the trailer.

The thing that had me most excited about all of this was the animation style.  In the original series, the one thing that has held me back from loving The Last Airbender more than I already did was the limits of its animation and the lack of a more ambitious handle on the visual style of the show.  While I loved how the series portrayed its action, among other visual elements, I always wished more could have been done.  With Legend of Korra, it looks like all of these issues will be addressed, as the series has now broken away from the 4:3 TV aspect ratio and entered the realm of the widescreen format, with HD level animation to boot.  Add to that a more ambitious looking handle of the fight choreography and where the “camera” is within the space, as we follow the action.  It looks like the creative team is truly planning on delivering a very solid level of animation to further push the boundaries of a Nickelodeon cartoon, which already stepped on the toes of many very good anime series.

Following the trailer, the crew got down to business, by describing the basic elements of the new season.  They were aided by a slideshow, which contained concept art for the series.  Many of the concept art pieces featured all of the various new characters, which the panelists described.  Based on all of this, some semblance of the plot of the series can be explained.  Set 70 years after the childhood adventures of Avatar Aang ended, the new season will focus on a female character, named Korra, who is next in line to become the Avatar, the being who will bring balance and piece to the world.  Korra is skilled at all bending abilities, except for airbending.  She will have to travel to a new location in an effort to learn airbending from Aang’s descendents.  While Korra seeks knowledge for the sake of good, there are still groups of anti-benders, known as the equalists, who are bent on creating anarchy.  The season will mainly be set in a city known as the United Republic, a steam-punk style metropolis, where people of all nations live together.  A lot of the look of what was shown has a very jazzy, 1920s Shanghai feel.  The audience inside the room were incredibly receptive to all of this news and the level of positive response was quite stunning.

I was a huge fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender and am really looking forward to additional seasons set in this world, with new adventures to become involved in.  While no release date was officially stated as of yet, sometime in 2012 seems to be the best we can hope for as of now.  In the meantime, one can only hope for more information being revealed and additional footage slowly making its way onto the internet.  The Legend of Korra is so far shaping up to be a great companion season to an already fantastic show and as long as the same great amount of care first applied to the series remains present, things should looking just fine for the future of the series.

The Last Airbender: The Legend of Korra Trailer:

First up was Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.  Now before anyone starts to linger on the bad taste left in everyone’s mouth after the first Ghost Rider film, I have to say that the reaction I had to this panel may have been my biggest surprise of Comic Con.  Before I say more, this is how the Comic Con schedule describes the panel:

Ghost Rider-Spirit of Vengeance — After blazing a trail around the globe in the worldwide hit Ghost Rider, Nicolas Cage returns as Johnny Blaze in Columbia Pictures’ Ghost Rider-Spirit of Vengeance. Still struggling with his curse as the devil’s bounty hunter, Blaze is hiding out in a remote part of Eastern Europe when he is recruited by a secret sect to save a young boy (Fergus Riordan) from the devil (Ciaran Hinds). At first, Johnny is reluctant to embrace the power of the Ghost Rider again, but it is the only way to protect the boy — and possibly rid himself of his curse forever. Live on stage: directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (Crank) and stars Nicolas Cage, Idris Elba, and Johnny Whitworth.

It seems to have been something close to fate to have had these directors become involved with this comic property.  As the directors (generally credited together as Nevaldine/Taylor) walked onto stage, a “director stunt reel” was shortly shown after, which exemplified why these guys were maybe the perfect fit to direct this film.  For those who are not aware, Nevaldine/Taylor are responsible for the Crank films and have a reputation for heavily involving themselves in the filming of extreme action sequences.  In the “director stunt reel”, the audience was shown clips of these guys doing crazy things on set, such as being on roller-skates and holding onto the back of motorcycles with one hand, while filming actors on motorcycles behind them with their camera in the other.  Watching them secured to bungee lines, as they closely followed stunt men going over brides was another nice touch.  This manic level of filmmaking insanity certainly promised something to behold.  I can definitely say that, regardless of the film, the making-of featurettes on the Blu-ray for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance will be worth the price of admission alone.

Moving on, the cast eventually came out, with the very cool Idris Elba providing enough enthusiasm to make up for the lack of the Wildman Nic Cage that was present at the panel.  To be fair, Cage does have enthusiasm for the Ghost Rider character (Cage is a huge comic book geek and had a Ghost Rider tattoo on his arm well before actually playing the character) and did a good job explaining the angle he was coming at for this sequel, which promises to be meaner, darker, badder, and, from the look of it, more bat-shit insane.  The end of one clip literally stated, “F***ing Your Sh** Up, in 3D, This February.”  Among the other noteworthy pieces of information given at this time, I was made very aware that this film would be rated R and feature a more intense version of Ghost Rider and the comic universe he exists in.  It was also pointed out that Cage actually got to play Ghost Rider this time around, instead of a stuntman (Note: in both films, Ghost Rider is played by someone in a motion capture outfit on set and digitally replaced later, instead of simply setting that person’s head on fire and letting the cameras role).  This aspect had Cage pretty excited, as did working with the crazy directors, which all of the other actors agreed on as well.

The footage is unfortunately not available online yet, but it should be stated that what was seen was really cool and winning me over on a Ghost Rider sequel should not have been such an easy task.  Besides the darker tone, I am more pleased with the craziness of it all, such as a bad guy emptying a machine gun into Ghost Rider’s mouth, only to have Ghost Rider spit it all back at him.  This is the Rock & Roll Ghost Rider that fans of the character should be looking forward to.  Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance opens February 17, 2012, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Next up was the hilarious panel for the new action comedy 30 Minutes or Less, which arrives this August.  This was a panel that was full of laughs and here is what Comic Con programming had to say about the film:

30 Minutes or Less — From Ruben Fleischer, the director of Zombieland, comes the action comedy 30 Minutes or Less. In the movie, Nick (Jesse Eisenberg of The Social Network and Zombieland) is a small town pizza delivery guy whose mundane life collides with the big plans of two wannabe criminal masterminds (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson). The duo kidnaps Nick and forces him to rob a bank. With only a few hours to pull off the impossible task, Nick enlists the help of his ex-best friend, Chet (Aziz Ansari). As the clock ticks, the two must deal with the police, hired assassins, flamethrowers, and their own tumultuous relationship. Talent in attendance includes director Ruben Fleischer and stars Aziz Ansari, Nick Swardson, and Michael Peña.

Right off the bat, getting Swarsdon and Ansari on stage was something that easily proved to be hilarious.  Micheal Peña, better known for dramatic work, managed to hold his own as well amidst the comedians.  Director Ruben Fleischer got things underway by describing the film and how the actors were all involved, but not before long, a clip was shown featuring one of the film’s stars who was unable to be at the panel.  Kenny “F-ing” Powers himself, Danny McBride had a video played, where he first berated his co-stars and Fleischer with insults, only to then introduce what was an extended clip of the film, featuring a hilarious bank robbery sequence, leading into a montage of footage from the rest of the film.  All of it looked very promising.

Following the footage, the director and stars continued to talk about the film and segued into Q&A.  These guys had a blast on the panel, particularly Ansari, who hilariously teased the Hall H audience with lies about seeing Dark Knight Rises footage and Nolan’s announcement of Inception 2 at another panel.  There were some nuggets of information about the film provided as well.  Star Jesse Eisenberg, who could not attend the panel, was said to have done a lot of his own stunt driving in the film and actually followed around real pizza delivery guys in order to get into his role.  It was also made very clear that Nick Swarsdon was the worst at keeping a straight face on set.  30 Minutes or Less explodes into theaters on August 12 and looks to be a lot of fun.

Red Band Trailer for 30 Minutes or Less

Following this group was the panel for the remake of Total Recall.  This was another film that was not registering very high on my list of things to see, but following the presentation, similar to Ghost Rider, I now feel on board with the film.  Once again, here is the Comic Con description:

Total Recall — Welcome to Rekall, the company that with one little implant can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Doug Quaid (Colin Farrell), the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his ordinary existence. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. With the line between fantasy and reality blurred and the fate of his world hanging in the balance, Quaid goes on the run to discover his true identity, his true love, and his true fate. Based on Philip K. Dick’s classic story “I Can Remember It for You Wholesale,” this new take on some of his most visionary ideas is directed by Len Wiseman and stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, and John Cho, all of whom will be appearing.

I was very happy to see such an enjoyable bunch of people be involved in this panel.  While other stars in other panels can tend to come off as bored or unfocused, everyone here seemed to be having a good time with one another.  It helped that they managed to turn an unnecessary film into one that actually looks to be quite exciting.  It was not long after the panel began that an entire scene from the film (which was not completely finished and had many CG animated storyboards present) was shown.

This footage is of course not yet available, but I can describe some of it.  From the production design, the setting of the film seems to be heavily influenced by Asian culture.  Based on the style of the filmmaking and tone of the action, the film appears to be going for a mix of Bourne Identity and Blade Runner.  I admired a long take sequence, which had Farrell’s character fighting off several guards, with a camera capturing it all and moving fluidly through the scene.  I was also a fan of the presence of future-tech in this film, as we saw some unique designs for the type of equipment being used.  There is certainly a lot of potential for a pretty cool sci-fi action film to come out of all of this next year.

Following the footage, the rest of the panel got underway, with a lot of talk about separating this film from the original, yet tackling similar issues, such as the divide between fantasy and reality.  It is easy to say all that and recognize why one film is an action classic and how to create a new identity, yadda yadda, but what was most enjoyable was how entertaining Farrell and especially Bryan Cranston were on the panel.  Cranston (much like his Walter White character on Breaking Bad) killed, as he humorously described the position he is in as an actor, who is now tackling both television roles and major film roles such as this one.  It was also nice to see the women on the panel having fun as well, as we learned about Beckinsale and Biel both having to fight politely with each other on set, while  both worried about hurting one another.  Director Len Wiseman did keep things on track by continuing to speak of his approach to the material, but it certainly would have helped if at some point someone suggested to the audience to, “get your ass to Mars.”  Still, I have more faith than I once did, so we’ll see, as Total Recall opens August 3, 2012.

Finally, the panel that the majority of the audience was waiting for, The Amazing Spider-Man was up next, inside the packed Hall H at around 6 pm at that point.  While there were a number of surprises in store, here is the Comic Con description for the proceedings:

The Amazing Spider-Man — The Amazing Spider-Man is back on the big screen, shot in 3D for the first time, and will be swinging into your neighborhood on July 3, 2012. Starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, and Martin Sheen, as well as Sally Field, and directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man‘s new creative team will be taking a whole new direction in the unfolding saga of everyone’s favorite web-slinger. Appearing in person are producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, director Marc Webb, and our own Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy — Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

The first thing to occur was the showing of the teaser trailer to the audience, in 3D.  Whether or not the teaser trailer was all that impressive to many the first time they saw it, I can at least say that my first viewing of the trailer on a much bigger screen and in 3D did a little more to have me excited.  What got me really excited is what followed.  After the trailer ended, it would seem that a random man, dressed in a crappy Spider-Man costume hijacked the Q&A microphone and began to ask a question.  It was not long before this man revealed himself to be the Web Slinger himself, star Andrew Garfield, who took off his mask and began to read a passionate letter about what playing the role of Peter Parker meant to him (video posted below).  Following this moment, Garfield introduced the rest of the cast and crew present, before taking his seat alongside everyone on stage.

Some various pieces of information about this restart to the franchise were delved into, but not before long, the audience was in for a real treat, as four minutes of footage from the film was shown, which featured a number of different scenes from the film to better get across what the tone will be like in this newest Spidey feature.  While not completely finished, we got to see a number of scenes involving Peter Parker’s newfound abilities, his relationship with his Aunt and Uncle, the relationship with Gwen Stacey, his homemade web shooters, and the quipping attitude Parker has when dressed up and catching thieves, just like flies.  Director Marc Webb, known for directing a ton of music videos and finding breakout success with his first film, 500 Days of Summer, seems to be delivering on the difficult promise of suddenly being thrust into the role of a blockbuster filmmaker.  Anyone worried about this film based on the teaser that saw the footage was certainly feeling a bit more confident in what this new younger, “grittier”, and cheaper Spider-Man has to offer come next July.

A question that was still on the minds of many was who the villain of the film would be, despite obvious signs pointing towards the Lizard.  Well true believers, it is now confirmed for sure that the Lizard is the main villain of the film, with Dr. Connors (Rhys Ifans) serving as a main character and all.  To make things even more noteworthy, footage of the Lizard was actually shown.  Following a montage of Dr. Connors-related scenes, the audience got their first look at the Lizard on film.  It was still an early creation, but it will be entirely CG and appeared quite hulking in the vein of a character like Killer Croc from Batman as opposed to what the comic version has tended to look like in the past.  Regardless, it was cool to finally see the Lizard on screen, which was followed by actor Rhys Ifans entering onto the panel as well.

Everything from here that followed was standard Panel stuff, as Garfield, Stone, and Webb were the main contributors to the questions asked.  The enthusiasm stemming from both Stone and Garfield were the best parts of all of this, as they both had lots of charm in the way they approached talking about the characters and what it was like to be involved with one of the biggest superhero franchises of all time.  Really, everything at that point was still fun, but getting a first look at what The Amazing Spider-Man is truly going to look like was the best thing about all of this.  It seems like it is in the right hands, and even if the CG in the trailer was a bit off putting, the use of practical effects seemed to be a major part of everything as well, which bodes well for the film as a whole; not to mention the focus on developing Peter Parker as a strong character first, and an action hero of sorts second.  The Amazing Spider-Man opens July 3, 2011.

And that will do it for the Sony Pictures panel.  It was a strong showing for the studio, with a lot of promise being thrown out there.  Coming away with enjoying what a comedy, two remakes, and a sequel will have to offer is certainly a positive and I hope that everything goes well from there.

I had the chance to talk to Nickie from Chula Vista, CA, and ask her a few questions.

Why did you decide to sleep out?

I like Stephanie Meyers and the Twilight series, and I was really hoping to meet the cast. Also I wanted to make sure I get into Hall H, I really want to see the movie clips!

What is your favorite Book/Movie in the series and why?

Breaking Dawn is my favorite book. Bella’s transformation into the vampire world and how her relationship with Edward finally comes together.

Well I have to ask are you Team Edward or Team Jacob?

I love them both! And also Bella! I have my tickets for next year’s Comic Con already!

It was a long cold night but the reward was beyond what I could have imagined. We where treated to breakfast. They passed out water, orange juice, bananas’, and assorted muffins. They also passed out Breaking Dawn mugs and posters.

This was my first year at Comic Con, I really didn’t expect this, it was really cool. In my eyes it shows that Summit and the cast of Breaking Dawn care for their fans as much as the fans do for them! And if that wasn’t enough, Ashley Greene (Alice Cullen), Nikki Reed (Rosalie Hale), Elizabeth Reaser (Esme Cullen), Booboo Stewart (Seth Clearwater), Julia Jones (Leah Clearwater) came out into the crowds and started signing autographs, taking pictures, talking to fans. They where actually going up and down the lines. It was amazing that they would just jump right into the lines, and it’s not like they signed a few autographs and left, they stayed for an hour or so. And if I may say, the ladies of Twilight are so gorgeous, what makes them even more beautiful was the kindness that they showed their fans. They took time with them and gave a lot of people some very special memories!

Finally around 10:45 we made our way into Hall H. Once inside of Hall H, with a crowd of over 6,000 fans the cast took the stage! The panel included: Bill Condon (Director), Kristen Stewart (Bella Swan), Robert Pattinson (Edward Cullen), Taylor Lautner (Jacob Black), Elizabeth Reaser (Esme) , Nikki Reed (Rosalie), and Ashley Greene (Alice).

The first clip they showed was about Jacob: It begins with Jacob talking to Esme and Carlisle. “Carlisle you’re the enemy now” Jacob warns. “Sam won’t hesitate, you will be slaughtered.”  Jacob also admits that the Cullen’s clan is indeed a family. “This is a family as strong as the one I was born into.” I know what I have to do.”

Taylor about his character: “Jacob at the beginning is the Jacob you know, then his heart is crushed.”  “He is forced to grow up, and become a different person.”

Another clip they showed The honeymoon at Isle Esme. Everyone went crazy!!

Bella and Edward walk into the bedroom, “You tired?”  he asked.  She shakes her head no. He invites her to swim. “I could use a few human minutes,” she says. He kisses her forehead, and then opens a sliding door leading to a private beach, and undresses as he walks towards the water. Hall H went wild. Let me just add Rob has been working out for this movie. So HOT! Bella is in the bathroom, giving herself a little pep talk as she looks in the mirror. She brushes her teeth, brushes her hair, and shaves her legs, and pick through some lingerie. It’s too much for her, she holds her head on the floor.

She walks out onto the beach in just a towel, she drops the towel, naked in the moonlight she strolls into the water where Edward waits, already swimming in the water, naked.

The place goes crazy again!!!!

The fans got to ask questions, but my favorite was from a little girl. She asked Rob, “Do you like having a baby with Bella?”

His answer: “I like babies. It was fun, especially in this series. You’re playing the statuesque guy, but as soon as you have a baby no one can contain their emotions, which is what Edward has been doing this whole time.”

Spartacus: Vengeance

The interview roundtables were held on Friday, July 22nd at the beautiful Hilton Bayfront hotel.   The star participants included Liam McIntyre, Lucy Lawless, Manu Bennett, Dustin Clare, Katrina Law and executive producer Steven S. DeKnight.   They were all on hand to discuss everything related to the prequel, the first season and the hotly anticipated second season…no holds barred.   I will present them below in the order as they were conducted (please excuse the poor iPhone pictures).  For anyone that does not want to listen to the audio interviews in their entirety I was also nice enough to very briefly summarize what was said by each actor.   Why?  Because I’m such a nice guy!

Liam McIntyre (Spartacus) and Steven DeKnight

Newcomer Liam McIntyre claimed he was already a big fan of the show before trying out.   He said he lost so much weight for the role.   He talked about his rigorous diet and the boot camp he underwent last September.  He said there were two days in particular that were the toughest.

DeKnight talked about Andy Whitfield’s departure from the show and his wishes to want the show to continue.  He said he was not trying to cast to recreate the physical appearance of Andy, but instead for talent.

Lucy Lawless (Lucretia)

Lucy recounts how her character lost a lot in Season 1.  She said her character will fight for survival in Season 2, but she’s got a master plan and endgame in sight.  She also talked about the show’s great writing.  She went on to admit that she is a bit nervous without John Hannah this season.   She says that Viva Bianca will bring more intrigue to the show.  She finished by talking about the sheer amount of money that goes into the show and how her character in Season 2 will initially be desolate, but will quickly get her mojo back.

Manu Bennett (Crixus)

Manu commented on how the scripts for the show are great.  He said in the second season there will still be a struggle between his character and Spartacus because of their different nationalities.  He said the second season will have lots of retribution.   He claims the appeal of the show is that viewers love the show and the characters no matter if they are villains or good guys.  He expanded upon his love for working on the show by saying that the actors are allowed to give insight and ideas about their characters to Steven DeKnight.  He says nothing stays the same.   He also said that camera and special effects have upped the game and that the aerial landscape shot in the Season 2 trailer will blow you away now that they are out in the real world.

Katrina Law (Mira)

Katrina says that Mira’s biggest journey in Season 2 is figuring out who she is, how does she fit into this new world and what does it mean to be free.  She says that Mira loves Spartacus because of the tender way he acts and how he treated his wife.  She claims there are not a lot of pranks on the set because there is a lot of ground to cover and tight shooting schedules.  She commented on the brilliant one liners we all came to know and love from the show.  She said they just finished episode 6 before breaking for a short hiatus.  She is excited to see Mira’s journey.  When asked, she said the actors get the script 1-1.5 weeks beforehand.  She also said we will see a lot of female slaves this year.  She went on to say that the sets are so varied and she is really proud of the show.  She is appreciative of her role.  She finished by saying that she watched the prequels as a fan much like the first 10 episodes of Season 1.  And oh yeah…I can’t forget this.  She called me out at the table and asked me if I interviewed her before.  When I said yes, she said she knew my name was familiar.   Needless to say, I had a sh1t eating grin on my face.   That full interview can be found here.

Dustin Clare (Gannicus)

I don’t know what it is about this guy, but I loved him in the prequels and he really impressed me in person, but I digress.   Dustin shied away from the initial question asked of him because he cannot giveaway the plot of Season 2 and how the characters will all meet up.  He says his character has a strong sense of purpose and won’t be swayed by anyone.  He would not elaborate on any character relationships.  He did know ahead of time that he would be in Season 2.  Lucky man!   He confirmed that 5 years of fictional time has elapsed between the prequel series and Season 2.  He said he was not included in the hunt for Andy’s replacement.  He also said he did a musical in Australia.  He said there will be romantic subplots and women in his life in Season 2.  He said gladiator school was hard and again and not easy at all.   He expanded by saying that he doesn’t eat a lot and does lots of stunts.   He finished that thought by saying the stunt team was nominated for an Emmy for the fight scene in episode 6 of the prequel and that the fight scene took 8 days to film.  He answered my final question by saying that Season 2 will both be about revenge and being hunted.

So let me ask.   Are you all as excited as I am?   Because…I cannot ‘effing wait!   Gladiators!

DreamWorks: Fright Night— Colin Farrell (In Bruges), Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad), Imogen Poots (Jane Eyre), director Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl), and screenwriter Marti Noxon (I Am Number Four) take the stage to give fans a taste of the horrific fun to come in DreamWorks Pictures’ 3D reimagining of the classic horror film. Hall H.

The appropriate way to handle a reboot of a film such as this would be by noting the respect that the cast and crew had for the original film and how they tried to distance themselves from it, while still keeping some core concepts intact.  Due to this, I found it fitting that the star of original Fright Night, Chris Sarandon, was the moderator for the panel.  While also making note that he does have a small cameo in the remake, Sarandon did seem quite pleased with this modern update and the people involved with its production.  All of the panel participants arrived on stage, following an introduction by the film’s director, Craig Guilespie.  It was notable that Colin Farrell seemed to be having quite a bit of fun and was being fairly candid about his issues with remakes and where his career has taken him thus far.

It was notable that star (and former Dr. Who) David Tennant was not present at the panel, but he did make an appearance via pre-recorded video, with a special message about a screening that would take place later in the evening, were you to text a phrase to a special number.  It helped that Tennant was quite charming in a British sort of way, especially as they later played a clip featuring his character in the film, which looks to be a lot of fun.  Given that he has been featured very little in the ads for the movies, this was a good way to keep him in the loop.

The panel was broken up by Sarandon, who would ask questions and then introduce clips of the film.  The most notable clip was an extended action sequence involving Farrell’s vampire character destroying the house lived in by Anton Yelchin’s character, followed by a lengthy driving sequence, featuring Yelchin, Toni Collette, and Imogen Poots racing away from Farrell.  This sequence was noteworthy due to the use of 3D, which the film is shot in and looked good enough, but also because of the lengthy one-shot driving sequence, which lasted for several minutes, before cutting.  Being from the director of Lars and the Real Girl, I was not expecting such stylistic flourishes, but this looks to at least be a well crafted thriller in terms of filmmaking.

As the panel came to a close, I came away anticipating this film a little more thanks to the clips that were shown.  I am a fan of the original, but the trailer did not do much to promise me something that had a familiar tone, which is a combination of horror and comedy.  After seeing the clips, I am looking forward to seeing the flick, as I think it has a solid cast, a talented filmmaker behind the camera, and a chance to appropriately update what is already a very fun story.  Fright Night opens on August 19 and trailers and clips from the film have been posted below.

So it’s with great pleasure that I present the below two-part audio interview (we thought we were out of time on the first one) I conducted with Adam Green this past Friday afternoon at Gas Lamp Cinemas in San Diego just hours before the premiere of his newest collaborative anthology feature, Chillerama.  As always Adam, if you are reading this, thank you so much for your kindness, generosity, hospitality and above all…your priceless advice.  I’m forever in your debt.

Comic-Con 2011: CHILLERAMA’s Adam Green Interview – Part 2 by Darkest Night Productions

Chillerama

Up first is the segment of the film known as  “Wadzilla” and it is directed and written by  Adam Rifkin.  Rifkin is notably known because of a little cult classic he once directed, Detroit Rock City.  The 1950′s monster movie spoof is about a guy that goes to get his sperm count checked and through some prescribed medication, he ends up creating one hell of a big sperm that ultimately attacks New York City.   Tell me you read that sentence without chuckling.  I dare you!  Yep, that’s right…a killer sperm.  Picture a giant sperm-like Pac Man creature with razor sharp teeth and there’s your vision of a killer sperm.

The second segment in Chillerama is called “I Was a Teenage Werebear.”  It is directed and written by Tim Sullivan and stars Sean Paul Lockhart, Gabby West, Anton Troy, Lin Shaye, Adam Robitel and even Ron Jeremy.   Basically, it’s both a musical and a spoof of Rebel Without a Cause, Grease and The Twilight Saga.  You may remember Lin from a little successful film already this year called Insidious.  And Ron Jeremy…well his name goes without saying.  I can honestly say that after hanging with the cast after the film’s premiere last Friday night, they are all a swell bunch of werebears and I’m happy to have met their acquaintance.

Up next was the main reason I was there, in support of my main man.  “The Diary of Anne Frankenstein” is directed and written by Adam Green.  The black and white film about Hitler trying to create the perfect killing machine to win the war stars Avatar and Hatchet‘s Joel Moore.   Moore plays Hitler and his bumbling vernacular, complete with English subtitles, steals the show.  “It was a mash, it was a monster mash!”  And to hear the crowd clapping along as Adam’s segment closed was just music to my ears.

And last but certainly not least, “Zom B Movie” is a spoof of 70′s and 80′s zombie films.  It was directed and written by Joe Lynch.  In the end, there’s a reason why this segment is last in the anthology.   It ties together all the events woven in between each segment.   I guess I should back up a minute here and let you all know that Chillerama is actually an anthology capsulated within its own film.   That’s right.   You heard me.   Chillerama is its own film that just so happens to encompass all the segments and Joe Lynch’s finale brilliantly, in my opinion (rules of three), sends this film off in a promising way all horror and gore hounds will love.

So here’s the thing folks.   Chillerama is ghoulishly good and delicious.   Its like getting your favorite candy as a kid after an exhausting night of trick ‘r treating.  There’s no way around it.   If you are a fan of “old school” horror and comedy, there’s no way you can’t have fun with this one.  And if you can’t, then you are already a brain dead zombie to me.   Chillerama will have you in stitches one moment and gasping in disbelief at the rude, crude and gruesome events unfolding onscreen the next.  You won’t find anything more offensive than this film and I mean that in the nicest of ways.  I sincerely do.

Before the film’s screening, there was a short question and answer session with all four directors.  Now tell me.   How cool is that?  The full length audio from the Q&A can be listened to below in it’s entirety.  The audio is a bit rough because well, let’s face it…their PA system wasn’t the best.   It wasn’t my fault.   Honestly!  But it’s still worth a listen, IMO.

Comic-Con 2011: Chillerama Q&A by Darkest Night Productions

As you heard in the above audio file, the film premiered to the captive Gas Lamp Cinema crowd raw and uncut, meaning some of the special effects were not completed as of yet.   However, that did not stop me from enjoying this one and eating up every delicious morsel Rifkin, Sullivan, Green and Lynch had to offer.   This is the feature every director in the aforementioned genres would love to make and have fun with and these four guys are doing just that…living the dream.

There is talk of a month long drive-in tour in support of the release of Chillerama.  Unfortunately, I do not know the when, where and other pertinent details just yet.  However, I do know the following.  When Chillerama makes it’s way to home video later this year, there will be a place on my Blu-ray shelves for it.  That’s confirmed, baby!  Until then, if you get the chance to experience this the way it was meant to be seen…at the drive-in, then by all means go for it!   Do it for America!   It’s an America tradition (past time) after all.  It’s almost like a civic duty.  You have to go!  Come to Cleveland, OH…PLEASE guys!

First up was Underworld Awakening, the fourth entry in the popular “Leathery Vampires vs. CG Lycans” franchise.  Comic Con’s schedule guide can once again provide an apt description for the film and its presentation:

Underworld Awakening brings a stunning new dimension to the epic battle between Vampires and Lycans as the first film in the franchise to shoot in 3D. Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrior Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find that humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species. Appearing in person are Kate Beckinsale, Michael Ealy, Len Wiseman (producer and director of Underworld and Underworld: Evolution), and directors Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein.

I know there are a lot of Underworld fans out there (it is vampires, after all), but I never warmed up to the first film and have not spent any time seeing the sequels.  With that said, seeing a panel about the latest installment did get me at least curious to check out the previous entries at some point to prepare for this one.  Aside from having Kate Beckinsale purposefully dressing up and looking great (I assume specifically for me) on the panel, the footage shown and the positive attitude from producer Len Wiseman did enough to keep me interested.

There was a two minute clip shown (in 3D, which the film is shot in) that had a lot of gunplay and tight leather action, which elicited plenty of cheers from the crowd.  The noticeable elements included a setting in which humans are now aware of vampires and lycans, the presence of Selene’s mysterious new daughter, and a lack of Scot Speedman’s character from the first two films (don’t put surprise cameo past this fact).  During the panel, Wiseman mentioned that the Underworld universe will be expanded on further with a number of anime shorts, which should be coming soon, most likely around the time of the new sequel’s release date.  Finally, much to my chagrin, after I made mention of Underworld going to space as a possibility to my friend sitting with me, this was shouted out as a question by someone behind me.  As a result, we have learned from Len Wiseman that the series will never be going into space, once again denying me of seeing the ultimate space opera battle between vampires and werewolves. Why oh why?

Underworld Awakening opens January 20, 2012 and is sure to please fans of the franchise thus far.

Next up for Screen Gems was the panel for the British alien invasion film Attack the Block, which was produced by Edgar Wright and has already won many over, including myself (as I have seen it twice at this point).  Here is Comic Con’s spiel about the film:

It’s the inner city vs. outer space from the producers of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Attack the Block follows a gang of tough inner-city kids who try to defend their turf against an invasion of savage alien creatures, turning a South London apartment complex into an extraterrestrial warzone. This is the film you’ve been hearing about since its debut at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin where it won the Midnight Screening Audience Award. Funny, frightening, surprising, wildly entertaining and winning rave reviews across the country. Appearing in person will be John Boyega (Moses), director Joe Cornish, and producer Edgar Wright.

I should point out that this panel was introduced and ended with the presence of music from the film (scored by Basement Jaxx) playing in the background, which leads me to believe that all panels involving Edgar Wright should have their own soundtrack.  This panel was unsurprisingly a lot of fun, as Edgar Wright has a very funny and witty personality, but also managed not to show up director Joe Cornish, who had the tough task of convincing thousands who had not already heard of Attack the Block to go and see it.  It was also endearing to see 19-year old star John Boyega appear at his first Comic Con, attempting to hold his own in the presence of two very entertaining filmmakers and 6,000 people within the audience by talking up the fourth season of The Wire as a big part of his inspiration when preparing for his role in the film.

As far as things that went down in the panel are concerned, the red-band trailer was shown (which I have posted below, but is spoiler heavy), followed later by a good 10-minute chunk of the film.  I found it confusing that the footage shown came from a very late portion of the film, which both has somewhat of a lack of context and essentially ruins the impact that the film has by being built to the point where it is at; however, the movie is so damn good that I wasn’t adverse to just kicking back and watching some of it again and if this leads to more people going to see the film, I can only hope that everything works out for this great film from debut film writer/director Joe Cornish.

Once entering the more Q&A heavy portions of the panel, a few interesting nuggets of information came out.  Cornish talked a lot about his deliberate choice to have practically created monsters for the film, as opposed to CG ones and described many of his influences in making this film.  Edgar Wright joked that they would tend to refer to it as “Super 8-Mile.”  Edgar Wright was asked about how far along he and actor Simon Pegg are in writing the third film in the so-called “Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy”, which so far includes Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.  Wright responded by stating that he and Pegg would be working on the script in the coming month.  There was also some talk about the surreal experience of being involved in The Adventures of Tintin, which Wright and Cornish both served as screenwriters on, as well as their work on Antman.  It was a lot of fun seeing this panel and I can only hope that that fun translates well to the big screen for the film.  Attack the Block opens in limited release on July 29, 2011 and will hopefully expand to more theaters from there forward.

Yeah it is a small world.

Ok…a lot of fans were surprised that Anakin would have an apprentice on the show considering what happens during Revenge of the Sith.  How did you approach that and what kind of role do you think Ahsoka plays?  Is she there there to reflect the changes in Anakin?

Oh wow.  Umm…you know I knew that she would be a major character in the Clone Wars but I didn’t know how long she would last.  Again, I don’t know Ahsoka’s fate and people ask me all the time what is her fate and I truly don’t know.  I know theories…I’ve heard theories but you know anything for certain I don’t know.  So you know…I think she plays many roles in the Clone Wars…I’ve heard in the past from Dave Filoni that you know…the audience is supposed to experience the Clone Wars through Ahsoka’s eyes…especially the kids…I think the kids can really relate to her and so maybe she’s just a more relatable character that you can put yourself in and see the Clone Wars through her eyes.

I’ve noticed she’s definitely matured over the course of the show and it seems like she’s becoming more and more like Anakin versus say someone like Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Yes.  Well she’s very much becoming more like Anakin because that’s her master so it’s kind of like a kid who mimics their parent a lot.  She’s just going to become naturally more like him because that’s her Jedi Master…I mean Jedi Knight not master…but umm… I think she’s a mix of several different characters.  She’s a mix of obviously mostly Anakin but she does have a little bit of Obi-Wan in her, a little bit of Padme in her, a little bit of Mace Windu in her…I mean a little bit of Plo Koon in her…she takes bits and pieces of all of her mentors.  She’s a melting pot of them all.

She’s is really unique since she does have so many different connections that most them don’t have since Anakin mostly just has Obi-Wan and briefly Qui-Gon, but for her we’ve learned this season that she’s got Plo Koon and all the others and that she’s kind of a different character than everyone else.

Yeah.

What do you think her arc is actually going to be?  I mean ultimately, she’s either going to end up following Anakin to the dark side…which probably won’t happen, or there’s going to be some kind of a confrontation between her and Anakin.  Something is going to have to happen. I mean obviously you don’t know what’s going to happen at the very end but do you see a pattern or an arc leading to something?

No…I mean the thing is that I still feel that Ahsoka is far from the dark side.  I mean… she’s still innately in her…she just wants to do what’s right at all costs.  She knows the Jedi way and she tries her best to live out the Jedi way at all costs.  So with that being said, I think she’s far from it…far from the dark side but I don’t know…you know…I’m not the writer of the show…

I know.

The thing is that I don’t even try to be because we have such a fantastic writing staff and also Dave Filoni.  Dave Filoni is on top of it all and he knows his stuff.  I couldn’t even begin to script a better ending that what I know they’re going to come up with…but I don’t know what it is yet but I know it’s going to be a good ending…

Yeah…

…So I don’t even try to hypothesize because I know it wouldn’t be as good.

But does knowing what’s going to happen in Episode III affect your choices you are making now?  Or does it have any effect on you at all?

It doesn’t have any effect on me.  I mean the only thing that has an effect on me is as she gets older.  I mean I really made a conscious choice to act older, sound older, and be more mature.  That’s really the only thing that’s affected my performance because I don’t think what happens in the future matters.  I mean…she doesn’t know what’s going to happen in the future, I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future, and I’m talking about your future, so you know…it doesn’t impact how you act today.

Right.  I know she can’t predict the future, but what I meant was that other than Obi-Wan, probably nobody else knows Anakin as well as Ahsoka…

Yeah I know what you are asking…

…so for Obi-Wan, he’s starting to see the seeds of darkness within Anakin and he’s starting to get a little uncomfortable…

Yeah…

…and he’s starting to see how far Anakin will go to achieve his goals…

I think she senses stuff at times and reacts by questioning his actions at the time.  She definitely questions his actions but she’s so blinded by love and I mean platonic love…but she loves Anakin so much that she only sees the good and it’s almost like she can’t see the bad in him.  I mean she’s so…you know they say that attachment leads the way to the dark side but she’s attached to Anakin.  So she does question his actions but she doesn’t look beyond that I don’t think.

I think that’s true.  A lot of the characters around him feel the same way as her which is partly why no one saw his fate coming.

Yeah.

Star Wars has had a lot of strong female characters such as Princess Leia, Padme, and now Ahsoka…how do you feel about that? I know we’ve talked about the audience seeing the show through her eyes, but do you think that there’s another reason that that character was made a female?  Do you think that decision was made to provide a strong female role model…

That’s a question for Dave Filoni.  I know that they specifically decided to make Anakin’s padawan a girl but I don’t know specifically why.  I did ask was it a conscious choice to bring in a female fanbase and they said no.  They said they made that choice because of the character and that they just wanted Anakin’s padawan to be a female.  They didn’t have ulterior motives but that was before  I came on to the show so that’s a question for him.

I think it was beneficial since Ahsoka has a very big female fanbase…

Yes…

…and even males too and I think that the show has attracted a new demographic that I don’t think that they were really even expecting since it seems like a whole new generation likes it…

Absolutely.  Absolutely.  It has brought in a ton of girls to the franchise and just kids in general.  It’s brought in a new generation and to the kids of today, Star Wars is the Clone Wars and that’s interesting because parents are now getting ready to show their kids the movies  for the first time which for all of us is the opposite since we watched the movies first…

Right…right…that is a whole different thing.  Each generation now has is own version of it now.

Yeah…

I don’t know how much longer the Clone Wars is going to go considering that you have a timeline that you are coming up against…do you guys have any idea of what’s going to happen?  Do you have another year or two years?

Again…I don’t know…I have no control over that…I don’t even know what’s going to happen the next episode!

<Laughter>

So they don’t tell us that far out.  We aren’t a part of those decisions.

Ok.  So what made you want to start Her Universe?

You know…close to half of all Star Wars fans and sci-fi fans are women and they weren’t giving us anything to buy and selfishly as a fan, I wanted more merchandise to buy so got into Her Universe because nothing was being made for the women and I was tired of wearing men’s size small or boy’s extra large.  So we started with Star Wars and now we’ve debuted our sci-fi line – we’ve got Battlestar Galactica, Warehouse 13, Sharktapus…

Yeah I saw that on your site.  I thought that was great since my wife loved that movie so she’ll be very happy about that…

Oh we have his and hers…

Do you?  That’s one of the questions I was going to ask you…

…At the web shop we have Sharktapus shirts for men…

So you’re expanding then since it was initially just for women….

We’re only doing Sharktapus but the rest of the clothes are for women.

Are there any thoughts to expand that line because I know there wasn’t a whole lot for women but actually there’s not a lot for children either…

…We actually have kids sizes on our website but we didn’t bring them here because this isn’t really known to be a kid’s convention.  But we have kid sizes but we really try to appeal to women of all ages.

I briefly looked at your site and I saw that the clothes sizes went from small to an extra large.  Are you thinking about adding even more sizes?

We do actually.  This shirt [pointing to one on display] goes all the way to 4X and the Yoda shirt goes to 4X…

So it just depends on the shirt…

Yeah it just depends on the shirt because some of the garments…I don’t actually make the garments.  I buy the garments and then do the printing on them.  So honestly, it just depends on the garment on what sizes it comes in.

First up…Machete!  Machete Kills and Machete Kills again have been greenlit!  The third film is supposed to be a space opera.  He announced that Spy Kids 4 will be presented in 4D with an aromascope.  Also, the following news will make many Rodriguez and Miller fans very happy.  Sin City 2 will start filming this year or it won’t happen at all.  He would love to do it in 3D and it’s now titled A Dame To Kill For.

But perhaps, even more important, Mr. Rodriguez was very ecstatic to discuss his newest production company called Quick Draw Productions.  It’s a film production company that can develop, finance, greenlight and produce films.  That will allow him and his team to focus on story and character.

Quick Draw’s first project will be Heavy Metal.  His biggest announcement, according to him, was the partnership with AMD that will push the production boundaries of technology in his films.  He has worked with them for the past 10 years.

And last but not least, he also announced another project called Fire and Ice based on the artwork of Frank Frazetta.

When does this guy sleep?

Guillermo Del Toro was on hand to give fans a sneak peak at his newest upcoming horror film, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.  He was joined by stars Guy Pearce and Ron Perlman.  Director Nicolas Winding Refn was also there to show us some scenes from his upcoming film, starring Ryan Gosling, called Drive.  They both look pretty appealing if I do say so myself.

Up next, Fox treated fans to some extended footage of a film I am really looking forward to, Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  Also, Justin Timberlake (who did not seem to want to pose for pictures) was on stage bringing sexy back along with the beautiful Amanda Seyfried to give fans a sneak peak at their upcoming film called In Time.  And oh yeah…there was this little film they showed some clips of too.  What was that name?  Oh yeah!  Prometheus!  Anyone ever hear of it?  Charlize Theron was live on stage as the moderator and her talked to Ridley Scott via videoconferencing.

First up was Haywire and this was a fittingly apt description provided by Comic Con concerning the film:

Haywire — An electrifying tale of espionage and betrayal. A female covert ops specialist who works in the deadly world of international operatives strikes back after discovering she’s been double-crossed by someone close to her in the agency. Mixed martial arts superstar Gina Carano makes her feature film — and Comic-Con — debut, starring and performing her own high-adrenaline stunts. Also appearing on the panel is director Stephen Soderbergh and co-star Channing Tatum.

The panel began by introducing director Stephen Soderbergh and stars – Gina Carano and Channing Tatum.  It was interesting to see Stephen Soderbergh present at Comic Con, as he and his penchant for making mostly art house films (mixed with the occasional blockbuster – Ocean’s Eleven) would not seem to gel with the atmosphere, yet he was certainly game to be a part of the experience, as were the other members of the cast.  Soderbergh spoke about the film, which was written by Lem Dobbs, who had written a previous Soderbergh film, The Limey.  It is a spy thriller, as the above description suggests, and features a great cast in addition to MMA fighter Gina Carano.  The cast includes Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, and Bill “Game Over Man” Paxton.  Following some brief introductions, we were treated to the trailer for the film, which can be found below:

After the trailer, Soderbergh, Carano, and Tatum talked more about the approach to making the film.  The most notable point was how Soderbergh wanted to treat the fights and action in the film as realistic as possible.  He is no fan of fights that go way overlong, when a real fight would last no more than a few minutes, when it comes to trained fighters.  With that in mind, Gina Carano and Channing Tatum spoke of the careful choreography of the fights that take place in the film; along with how effective the safety pads were (only so much).  Following this discussion, a clip of the film was shown, which featured a brutal fight between Carano and Fassbender’s characters, who engage in a kick ass hotel room fight scene.  After this footage, Soderbergh explained how a particular take, used in the film, is one where Fassbender accidently looked directly at a vase that was to be smashed in his face during the scene.

As far as the film goes, I found the trailer and the clip shown to speak well for the film.  It feels like Soderbergh’s take on a Bourne or Taken-like film, and given that I am constantly impressed in the different approaches that Soderbergh takes as a filmmaker, I am looking forward to its release this upcoming January.

Finally, before moving onto the next film, I must point out one question that was asked during the Q&A.  It has previously been made news that Stephen Soderbergh plans to retire from directing in the very near future.  A question related to this was asked of him, which lead to Soderbergh revealing that this is not exactly the case and apparently it was during a (slightly inebriated) conversation with Matt Damon, which led to him stating this as a possibility.  Soderbergh then humorously compared Damon to a 14-year-old girl, as he was the one who started talking up this possibility to the press.  It made me happy to hear this, as I am always excited when it comes to seeing a new Soderbergh film hit theaters.

Next up is The Raven and Comic Con provided this description for the film:

The Raven — The film is a gritty thriller in which Edgar Allan Poe joins forces with a young Baltimore detective to hunt down a mad serial killer who’s using Poe’s own works as the basis for a string of brutal murders. Raven stars John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe, Luke Evans, and Alice Eve and is directed by James McTeigue.

Given the type of film this is, it felt much more Comic Con appropriate to have a murder mystery starring John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe, which is directed by the man who gave us V for Vendetta, be presented.  Director James McTeigue, along with cast members John Cusack, Alice Eve, and Luke Evans were all present at this panel, which started off by providing an early look at the film.  As the film does not arrive until March 2012, this footage was unfortunately exclusive to Con, but what I can say is that the film looks to be very R-rated and promising in the vein of films like Sleepy Hollow and Se7en to an extent.

After the footage, the panel continued with talk about the development of this screenplay and how it is linked to the mysterious circumstances involving the death of Edgar Allan Poe.  The film takes place during the last week of Poe’s life, so it will be interesting to see how this film plays out in that regard, possibly having some fun with the uncertain facts.  The cast and crew also had the chance to shed some light on the production, which took place in Siberia and thoughts on Poe as an author.  As far as the production goes, Alice Eve made a notable statement by pointing out that her character is a hostage for much of the film and explained how she was buried alive (in the film), which had her being forced to be covered with “clean dirt” for most of the days on that particular set.  Concerning Poe, Cusack had a lot of fun talking up Poe as the godfather of Goth and explaining his process in becoming that character.

Director James McTeigue has previously directed V for Vendetta and Ninja Assassin, both of which featured the presence of the Wachowski Brothers and producer Joel Silver.  This is a bit of a move away from that style of filmmaking, so it will be interesting to see how McTeigue manages to handle this period/mystery/horror feature.  The premise is intriguing enough and I like the cast, so I am anticipating this early spring 2012 release.

The rest of this post will revolve around the various things that occurred during this highly entertaining panel and I am sure that fellow Why So Blu writer Sean Ferguson will make any additional notes in the comment section below or in his own Comic Con articles.

Before getting into ‘Tintin’, Steven Spielberg was presented with the Comic Con Inkpot award for lifetime achievement.  As the excited crowd settled down, things got underway with some discussion of what the process was like for Spielberg to step away from making movies through the use of film and step over to the digital side, as ‘Tintin’ makes full use of motion capture technology, similar to Avatar.  After explaining how he got into the ‘Tintin’ comic book series to begin with, Spielberg explained the process, addressing his treatment of the digital camera as if it were him filming a live action feature, as well as a discussion of how the actors were implemented in this style of filmmaking.

Following some of this discussion, Spielberg decided to show off some test footage designed to see how the look of digital elements would compare to the live action actors.  This became a bit of a surprise gag, as Peter Jackson was the star of this footage, auditioning for the part of Captain Haddock, while Tintin’s dog Snowy (full CG) appeared, jumping around in the background.  After this footage ended, everything became more amazing, as Peter Jackson joined Spielberg on stage for the remainder of the panel.  I would guess that many were shocked, as Jackson was presumed to be busy in New Zealand, filming The Hobbit, but due to a three week break, Jackson was able to join in on the fun at Comic Con.

As the panel continued, the duo premiered an extended look at ‘Tintin’, which lasted for a good five minutes, and did a great job of showing off the style of film that these filmmakers were intending.  ‘Tintin’ is very much a classical adventure story, which should be filled with action, adventure, comedic elements, and even some noir-ish qualities as well, since it is a globe-trotting, murder mystery of sorts.  All of the footage was shown in 3D, and while it did look very good, Spielberg did say that the final rendering of the CG motion capture has not been completely finished as of yet.  If this film can look even better than it already does, then people will be in for quite the treat, come this December.

Following the main panel, Q&A was opened up to the floor and audiences were treated to another surprise.  At the front of the Q&A line turned out to be actor Andy Serkis, who previously starred as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings films and will be portraying Captain Haddock in ‘Tintin’.  Following this brief appearance, many fans got the chance to ask these filmmaking questions, which led to one very lucky man having the opportunity of a lifetime, as he got to join Spielberg and Jackson on stage.  While simply wanting to know Spielberg’s filmmaking preference, his shirt read, “If possible, I would love to meet Steven Spielberg just to shake his hand and say thank you,” which worked very well in his favor.

The panel was definitely a lot of fun and a highlight for many in attendance at San Diego Comic Con this year.  The Adventures of Tintin opens on December 22 and below you can find some highlights from the panel as well as the trailer for the film.

Andy Serkis in Q&A Line

So anyway, the following is a quick summary of everything that went down in the 45-minute panel…

To begin the panel, an exclusive Season 2 Comic-Con 2011 highlight reel was shown to the screaming audience.

The day of the panel, July 23rd, just so happened to be Paul’s birthday.

The panel talked a little bit about the character of Stefan and his dark place he will be in during Season 3.

They spent some time joking around with Nina and her dual roles.

There were also some joking moments when they talked about the characters of Caroline and Tyler and if they hooked up how they would have puppies.

The moderators asked the actors what roles they would want to play.  There were some entertaining answers.  Candice was the only one that responded that she was perfectly happy with her Caroline character.

A female audience member asked Paul for his name sign.  He got embarrassed.  He eventually got up in front of the screaming audience and personally delivered it to the lucky fan.

The Vampire Diaries is the most popular US show in Brazil.  I just thought you should know that!

MONOPOLY®: Futurama Collector’s Edition will be available this fall.

There definitely is a lot going on in this very slick trailer, which in no way suggests that things are going to be getting any easier for Rick Grimes and his fellow survivors, as they continue to make their way through a world now suffering a zombie apocalypse.  I for one am really anticipating what this full, 13-episode second season will have to offer.  The first season was very solid, but could use some room for improvement, which I would like to believe is very possible, given the popularity of this series.

In addition to the trailer, audiences at Comic Con were treated to a large scale photo setup booth for The Walking Dead.  The booth faithfully recreates a key scene from Season 1 and finds a Merle Dixon replica (courtesy of Special FX Makeup Artist Greg Nicotero and his KNB EFX Studios) chained to the department store rooftop moments before he cuts off his own hand. The walkers, meanwhile, actively shake back and forth at the door, moaning as Dixon desperately pulls at his handcuffs.  I took it upon myself to become involved in this most harrowing situation.

Plenty of other Walking Dead themed items were available on the showroom floor as well, including all of the different versions and copies of the graphic novel in which the show is based on, several different zombie busts, and even the debut of The Walking Dead Board Game.  There was also promotion of the official companion guide to The Walking Dead TV series.  This one-of-a-kind behind-the-scenes guide focuses on both the making of Season 1 and the creation of the bestselling comic book which inspired it.  All of these items, along with more news, photos, and videos can be found at AMC’s Walking Dead website.

Season 2 of The Walking Dead returns Sun., Oct. 16 at 9PM | 8C on AMC

This dynamic action-thriller directed by Oscar® winner Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) boasts a talented cast that includes Channing Tatum (GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra), Ewan McGregor (The Ghost Writer), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Antonio Banderas (The Legend of Zoro), Bill Paxton (“Big Love”), Michael Douglas (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), Michael Angarano (Almost Famous); and introduces mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Gina Carano as Mallory Kane, in a demanding lead role that has her performing her own high-adrenaline stunts.

First up was the new web series H+, a science fiction series set in the not too distant future.  The story takes place in a world that has advanced technology and communication far enough to the point beyond in-hand mobile devices, with implants that now have the user literally connected to the internet via their own mind.  However, during the early stages of the release of this new technology, a virus within the system causes the death of a third of the population of the world.  This virus leads to a new world order, as we follow a number of different characters through this whole ordeal.

Producer Bryan Singer was not at the panel, as he is currently in London, filming Jack the Giant Killer, but he did provide a video introduction for the trailer of the web series, which can be seen here:

The series has been directed by Stewert Hendler and has been written by John Cabrera and Cosimo De Tommaso.  It was filmed mainly in Chile, in order to have a place that can represent a number of different continents and countries, as the scope of this web series is worldwide.  The web series will be divided into 48 episodes, each lasting around 3-7 minutes, making for a 3-4 hour total runtime.  The series will have 11 different main characters, with the option to view the different episodes in a number of different arrangements, in order to better focus on certain characters and understand various arcs of the series in different sort of ways, once all the episodes have been released.  H+ is set to premiere later this year.

The second half of the panel was devoted to the Mortal Kombat Legacy web series, created and developed by Kevin Tancharoen.  The panel included Tancharoen, as well as many of the actors who have appeared in the web series thus far, including Jeri Ryan (via Skype) and Michael Jai White.  A brief Q&A with the moderator had Tancharoen address the fan reaction to the series thus far, with Tancharoen being very forward thinking in regards to both the good and bad comments that each episode has received.  The cast and crew present also spoke highly of Tancharoen and what his vision of the series has had to offer.

Following this initial discussion, the audience was finally treated to the still unreleased episode of the series and season finale for the time being – Episode 9: Cyrax and Sektor.  Apparently, the reason for the delay was due to the amount of time it took to have the CG robotic warriors be appropriately rendered for the film.  Comic Con turned out to be a great place to premiere this episode, as it received great reaction, which should be obvious, because who wouldn’t want to see live action robots beating the crap out of each other at a panel for Mortal Kombat?  The robots certainly looked very good, which is promising for the next season, as more confidence has surely been built up, based on the response for the previous episodes as well as this upcoming one, which will be officially released Sunday, July 24^th on YouTube and Machinima.com

One final note, Mortal Kombat creator, Ed Boon, was at the panel and revealed that the recently released Mortal Kombat game would be receiving a new downloadable character.  This character would be none other than Freddy Krueger, who will have his own set of special moves and fatalities for fans to tear into.  This was easily pleasing to both fans of Mortal Kombat and of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.

A lot of fun was had at this panel, as people got a nice sneak peak at an exciting and epic looking web series along with some good ol’ Mortal Kombat fun, as the newest episode was premeired.  Audiences certainly seemed satisfied and will most likely continue to be pleased by all the different joys that San Diego Comic Con has to offer.  Check back at Why So Blu to find more coverage of events, panels, and screenings during this exciting time that is 2011’s San Diego Comic Con.

Uday:  You will have everything you want.  Everything I own will belong to you.

Dominic Cooper stars as both a former Iraqi Lieutenant, Latif, and as the spoiled, brutal man-child that is Saddam Hussein’s son, Uday.  Convinced that he is a powerful man, like his father, or just curious about having a life-sized toy, Uday decides that he should have his own “fiday” – a political decoy.  Latif was a childhood friend of Uday’s and is almost a dead ringer for him as far as looks go.  Following some subtle facial changes, a bit of torture, and the threat of his family’s death were he to not agree, Latif begins living the life of Uday after essentially extinguishing his own.

Things start out poorly for Latif in his new life as Uday’s “brother” and only get worse as it continues.  While Latif has his sense of honor and little desire to embrace a life that is filled with ill-gotten riches, Uday is simply a terrible person.  He is essentially the pirate prince of Baghdad, as he rapes, pillages, and plunders his way through life, with nothing but the occasional scolding from his father to stand in his way.  Latif wants none of this, but is forced to be a part of some of these terrible actions anyway.  However, new toys can only be good for so long and once Latif starts to rebel, his presence may eventually be deemed as unnecessary.

The best thing about this film is Cooper, who has the task of playing two different characters as well as playing one character who has to play the other.  It is an incredibly challenging role that is both an achievement in special effects as well as one that relies very heavily on an actor giving his all to create two distinct personalities.  As Latif, Cooper embodies professionalism in a sense, as he is a man doing a job and working very hard to remain respectful, despite the atrocities he witnesses.  As Uday, the showier role, Cooper has the chance to effectively play a sociopath, who is all about dominance and showing off his power and riches.  As the movie relies on having the lead actor portray two different characters, it is great to see that this was pulled off as effectively as it was.

Uday:  I will never let you go.  I will never let you go.

The film was directed by Lee Tamahori, who has dabbled in a number of different types of films, including Die Another Day, The Edge, and Next.  It is a mixed filmography to say the least, so I was very pleased that this smaller scale picture seemed to keep him focused and assured in filming a thriller of sorts crossed with a biopic, set around the time of the Gulf War.  He does good work in keeping the film set at an intense level, as we watch Latif try to navigate himself through the seemingly bi-polar nature of Uday’s character.  Uday is volatile and easily agitated when he doesn’t get his way, which leads to many tense standoffs that are well captured in the film.  Tamahori also doesn’t shy away from depicting the darker elements in this film, which includes Uday’s despicable sexual actions.  The brutality of the film borders on going over the top, but only remains tolerable due to the strangely charismatic nature of Uday, along with the next point I will bring up.

The film is based on the life of the real Latif Yahia, who has written novels about his experiences surviving as a body double for the son of Saddam Hussein.  It is this aspect that has me get past some of the more unbelievable elements, simply because sometimes things can be so unbelievable that they simply have to be true.  This film sports a number of scenes of torture in different kinds of ways, graphic violence, and various instances of Uday doing very stupid things with the help of his good friend – cocaine.  This film does little with subtlety, choosing show over tell constantly.  It has been given an action movie vibe, which definitely keeps the pace moving forward, even as it dips into the drama of Latif’s situation.

Much like the nightclubs that Uday visits during this film, with his double forced to tag along, and his guards right behind (tasked with protecting their horrible client), this film is very flashy.  It makes use of archival war footage to provide a setting and climate for these characters, but then indulges in showing off the wonderfully twisted life of Uday.  Sex, drugs, and violence are very much present throughout this film and finding out how far someone would go in a world like this becomes a thrilling challenge to watch.  Various issues here and there are mostly outweighed by the very good performance by Dominic Cooper, who manages to be immoral and incredibly just in his dual performance.  It only pays on a superficial level to live the life of the devil’s double, but it does make for a gripping story.

Uday:  Should I kill him?

Latif:  Kill your father’s greatest friend?

Nicolas Cage said he was comfortable with doing all the driving stunts except when there were people on the hood of his car.  However, he joked that Amber Heard on the hood of the car made this movie so much better than Gone in 60 Seconds.

Patrick was told not to “drive angry” on Ground Hog Day.  Hence, that’s where the film’s title came from.

When asked, Amber Heard said that Nicolas Cage acted a like a little bit of both…Big Daddy and Bad Lieutenant.

Nicolas Cage said he loves all film genres.  He is not tied down to just one.  He said he tries to keep it fresh and interesting.  If you look back at all his roles, I guess I would call that a true statement.

When the Image big shot set out to create the heroic werewolf, he was in need of an artist who set himself apart from the rest of the pack.  Kirkman needed the sketch talents of someone who could breathe life into the idea that was growing in his head.  He found a guilty party in the very capable Jason Howard.  Howard took some time from the chaos of Comic-Con to speak with Why So Blu about the impending conclusion of The Astounding Wolf-Man, his thoughts on the departure, and what future projects lie on the horizon.

WSB: When was the concept of Wolf-Man first presented to you?
JH: I don’t remember the year, probably ’06, ’07.  Robert (Kirkman) and I had worked on another kind of one-issue thing for Image and he wanted to do a new superhero book and I was up for it.  So he threw out the idea of werewolf superhero and then we kind of talked about it and I worked on some designs and developed it together that way.  The initial concept was his and we ran with it from there.

WSB: When you work with him or any writer on a book, how does that work?  Do you present the artwork first or does he come at you say “Hey this frame, we need to have an angry individual here.  It’s gonna look like this, etc.”?
JH: Working with Robert, he writes full scripts so the story of the book is driven by him as far as the events that happen.  I get the script from him that says page 1, this happens, page 2 kind of details it and I do my best to draw that and add things that I think will make it cool or just dynamic and clear as possible.  Then, if there are things in it that I have, like ideas that would change the actual content of the story, then I call him or email him and we talk about it.  It’s not too often.  He knows a thing or two about writing (laughs), so it works out pretty well.

WSB: Unfortunately, Wolf-Man is coming to a close soon.  Was that planned from the beginning or was this a premature ending?
JH: Well, Robert always told me that it wasn’t going to go on forever.  We didn’t have a number set.  As we were coming up to 25, he was kind of wrapping up with the story a lot of key plot points that were going on since the beginning of the series.  He thought it might make sense to tie it up there.  Twenty-five is a nice round number.  He and I have another project that we want to do that we’ve been kind of talking about and doing sketches for for a while, so that’ll give us an opportunity to jump onto something else.

WSB: Do you get attached to the characters, to a project?
JH: Yeah, I’ll be working on the last issue of Wolf-Man after Comic-Con.  Even on issue 24, I finished that and I was like “Oh no! That’s next to the last issue.  I kind of like drawing this guy or that,” but I’m really excited about this next project too so it’s all good.  If I get that lonely or homesick from Wolf-Man, I can always draw him in my sketchbook.

WSB: When is the last issue of The Astounding Wolf-Man due out?
JH: I’m not sure when it’s on the schedule for.  It’s not finished yet, so it’ll be in the next month or two.

WSB: You mentioned ‘the next project’, but you’re tight-lipped about that.  When can we expect that to hit the street?
JH: I don’t know the answer to that either, hopefully sooner than later, but there are some schedule things Robert and I have to figure out as far as when it will come out, how much we want to have done before it launches and all that kind of stuff.

WSB: So that is another project with Robert Kirkman?
JH: Yes, that was part of the reason when it was time to end Wolf-Man.  That kind of made it not as sad as it could have been because we’re both excited about this other thing.

WSB: Is Wolf-Man dead after this story line or can we expect to see him in the future?
JH: Uh, no comment.

WSB: Ha ha!  Alright, I’ll let the readers draw their own conclusion.  We appreciate your work and what’s coming on down the line!
JH: Sure!  Thank you.

Whatever the mysterious project is of Howard and Kirkman, we don’t have to wait as far as Howard’s works are concerned.  He recently teamed up with fellow Image artist Ryan Ottley (Invincible, Haunt) to create the wildly outlandish Sea Bear & Grizzly Shark.  Both talents split their duties with Howard writing and drawing Sea Bear while Ottley does the same with Grizzly Shark.  The stories are loosely tied together with an evolutionary mix-up being the root cause of nature’s mismatch.  An enhanced soldier has a vendetta with the Sea Bear while a backwoods family tries coexisting (sometimes) in a forest of Grizzly Sharks.  These black & white tales are quick reads that contain an odd mix of limb-severing violence and humor, perfect for disturbed readers such as myself.  Sink your teeth into a copy today and be sure to check out The Astounding Wolf-Man as well!

Michelle Rodriguez, Aaron Eckhart, Neal Moritz and director Jonathan Liebesman all made the trek to Comic-Con to promote the mayhem.

The film was promoted to the captive Hall H audience as an alien invasion with a myopic view, very first man shooter kind of style.  They say it plays like a video game, almost like Modern Warfare or Halo.

Aaron spent some time telling us why he enjoys acting so much as Jonathan was quick to say that they took a lot of Aaron’s ideas in for the film.  Aaron said he always wanted to make a war movie.

Michelle Rodriguez said although the bootcamp for the film was very tough, the most grueling pre-production work was the research.  Michelle also said she is very much into physical roles (as we can tell).

Neil loved the realism of the script and pondered what would really happen if an alien invasion took place.

Battle: Los Angeles currently is slated for a March 11, 2011 release date.

While running through the crowded vendor hall to meet up with fellow photographer Scott T. Morrison, I passed up a booth that sat a pretty girl in blue dressed in one hell of a kick-a$$ skeleton outfit (I need to talk to her about that outfit…it’s almost the exact one I visualized in my movie script).  I went up to her, gave her a whysoblu.com wristband and asked her if she wouldn’t mind if I took her picture.  Thankfully, she said yes.  I snapped a picture, thanked her and went on my merry way.  I probably did not go more than 20 feet before my brain fully processed what just happened.

BRAIN:  She was blue.

BRIAN: OMG!  She was!

BRAIN: You have to go back and see if she will pose with the wristband for future publicity if needed.

BRIAN: Right, on it.

It was funny because as soon as I got back to her booth and told her what my brain was thinking, she said she had the same similar thought I did when I hurried off initially.  So that was my meeting with Ms. Monster.  She gave me one of her cards and I really wish I could have spent more time talking to her and learning more about her projects, but as usual in life, I was in a hurry (insert sad face).

Summit Entertainment’s RED is based on the DC Comics graphic novel of the same name.

Helen Mirren said she was attracted to this film because it was very different and as an actor, you want those roles.

Bruce Willis claims that everyone is funny in this film.  He said that everyone had trouble keeping a straight face during shooting.  He said making this film was like recess, not like work or a math class.

Bruce WIllis also admitted to like fighting with Star Trek‘s Karl Urban.

Helen did some gun training to prepare for her role.  She said the hardest thing to do was to keep a straight face while firing a gun.

It was leaked that Richard Dreyfuss will appear in this film and that the cast was very excited to work with him in the 9th week.

The film’s final trailer was premiered for all in attendance Thursday afternoon in Hall H.

The panel consisted of  everyone’s favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent and fellow cast members Kat Dennings (Darcy), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Ms. Natalie Portman (Jane Foster) and director Kenneth Brannagh.  The powerful film will hit theaters May 5, 2011.  In the meantime, enjoy the photos I was able to snap from the press pit.

As with the other Marvel panels, I was in the press pit taking pictures so forgive me for not having any real substance to this story, but try to enjoy the below pictures nonetheless.  Thanks for reading!

The panel consisted of both old and new action stars.  Sadly, Jason Statham wasn’t there, but in addition to Stallone, on hand were Randy Couture (a UFC champion), Terry Crews (this guy is crazy), Dolph Lundgren (“I will break you”), “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and even a surprise visit from Mr. Diehard himself, Bruce Willis.  So just like I have been doing this whole past week, I’m just going to list everything below informally as it was discussed in Thursday’s panel.  So sit back and reminisce about the good old action movies of your childhood as Stallone brings the hardcore Rated-R action back, full throttle, for all of us to enjoy!

Stallone said that this film is a love letter to every action fan.

Steve Austin accidentally broke Stallone’s neck in a fight scene.  He had to have 3 screws put into his neck.  He wanted the fight scene to look real.  He also said that any film he has ever done where doesn’t get hurt, stinks.  He used Rhinestone as an example.

Stallone said the film is a real life action movie with no CGI.  He said he looked in CGI and it smelled of desperation.  He wanted to do it the old way, the classical way.

Stallone said they shot in Brazil because you can hurt people in Brazil.  LOL.

Stallone said that Lionsgate was shocked when Comic-Con gave them permission to play this tunnel scene for all of us in attendance.   It was everything an action junkie fan of the 80’s, like me, could ever ask for and more.

Stallone said he hates arm wrestling.

Stallone said that he loves directing more than acting because he is a complete control whore and a total power freak.

Stallone said he is a geek like all of us because he went to school as a young child with a Superman outfit under his clothes.

As an extra bonus, the people from the Guinness Book of World Records showed up to present Stallone and Dolph with a plaque cementing their names in history as Rocky became the most successful sports franchise in cinema history.  That’s quite an achievement.  I’m glad I was there to witness Stallone earn this milestone lifetime accomplishment.  Yo Adrian!

When asked whether or not it was difficult to assemble the “Dream Team” cast he has in The Expendables, Stallone answered no.  He said if he would have thought about it, then it probably would not have happened, but he just made a few calls and people were willing to be involved.  Surprisingly, Steven Segal, Chuck Norris and Van Damme were unresponsive.  Oh well, their loss.

This movie represents my childhood and I can’t wait for August 13th to roll around when The Expendables opens everywhere, nationwide.  Get out there and support a real action movie next weekend!

The panel started with a quick speech by Simon Oaks, head of Hammer Films.  He went on to say that this is the first film from Hammer in 35 years.

Matt Reeves encouraged the audience not to think of this film as just another remake.  He originally did not think this film should be remade.  He said it is the story of his childhood.  I really did not get what he was saying when he constantly referred to his childhood, but oh well.  He wanted to put this original story into the American landscape and in doing so he also conducted research on serial killers to help make this film feel real as possible.

We were treated to two clips and the trailer from the film.  I think I’m going to love this one just as much as the original.  After all, how I could I not love it with Chloe in the lead.  It’s going to be phenomenal.  Like the Black Eyed Peas, “I Got A Feeling.”

Clip 1 showed Chloe getting sick from trying a piece of candy and eventually led into that uncomfortable conversation where she has to ask her young boy companion if he would still like her even if she wasn’t a girl.

Clip 2 showed Richard Jenkins’ loving relationship with Chloe’s character in the movie and to what lengths he will go to as her caretaker to make sure she is safe, sound and um… well fed.

Want to know a fun trivia fact?  Chloe’s parents will not let her see the Swedish film Let The Right One In.  If Chloe pulls this off, then she really is the child prodigy I believe her to be.  I want her to be haunting, yet sweet and sincere.  Here’s hoping.

Let Me In will be released in theaters on October 1^st this year

Attendees at the discussion were privy to some great featurettes, such as that of the upcoming release of Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood, a title that de Lauzirika has been hard at work on along with his efforts on the Alien Anthology, which will include a whopping 65+ hours of extras.  If you are looking for content on Blu-rays, Alien Anthology is your answer, your grail and your Encyclopedia Britannica.  These aren’t necessarily quick clips of outtakes either.  Rather, you will find significant behind-the-scenes footage of the films’ creation and editing.  The resume’ of de Lauzirika continues to grow as he directed his first full-length film this past year, titled Crave, as well as his recent work on the Chicago set of the much anticipated Transformers 3.

Cliff Stephenson spent some time over the past year working on the Rambo Extended Cut Blu-ray, of which the film is now officially known as John Rambo.  While fielding questions from the audience, one attendee asked why studios release a film, then re-release it with more content and so on, ultimately forcing consumers to buy multiple versions of their favorite films, all on the same format.  Stephenson replied by saying this was not a pre-planned marketing ploy.  As the initial version of Rambo was about to be shipped, Sylvester Stallone made a last-minute decision to put an extended cut on disc, Blu-ray only to be exact, which some say is essentially a brand new film.

Brian Ward has recently wrapped up work on the 80’s cult classic Max Headroom as well as another underground hit, Mystery Science Theater 3000.  Both transfers are unfortunately for DVD only, but these can still serve as a nice little addition to any home library.  Both were dream projects of Ward who is proud of his efforts and eager to see them arrive in the hands of the public in the near future.

As for Javier Soto, the diligent professional half jokingly said that he has spent the better part of the last year working on a project with Guillermo del Toro that will not come to fruition (referencing the recent production squashing of The Hobbit).  Unfortunatley, he wasn’t kidding.  After the recent demise of the Tolkien story, Soto has regrouped and focused his attention elsewhere.  You will find he is not running idle as he begins work on the upcoming Predator motion comics.

With the great Blu-ray vs. DVD debate still ongoing as well as that of extras vs. no extras, I asked the panel if they monitor the financial activity of their creations once they hit stores.  Surprisingly, most do not.  They work hard on assembling these theater-to-home transfers and once they conclude their duties on one product, their attention is immediately focused on the next one in line.  Brian Ward did say his stability is structured a bit differently, so if his work sinks at the cash register, it could spell doom for him.  Fortunately, they all do high quality work that keeps fans happy as well as those consumer dollars circulating.

So… um… they showed a trailer.  Not being a huge western fan, I gave it a chance.  I was instantly sold.  I think I am going to like this film.  It seems like it homogenously mixes both genres of western and sci-fi into a perfect marriage, much like the third installment of the Back to the Future franchise managed to do so many years ago.  The clip we were shown started off just like any normal western would until a certain key/pivotal incident happens and then bam… you really do have a movie about cowboys and aliens.  My curiosity is peaked at an all-time high over this project now.  Before this panel, I can’t say I ever gave this production a single thought.

Well anyway, like the panel before this, I was stuck on a ledge in the front row of the press pit so all I was able to do was snap picture after picture.  I have very little notes about what actually went down at the panel.  Harrison Ford was pretty elusive throughout so I apologize for not having any really good shots of him, but people have requested I unload the Harrison pictures and what not from this panel so I hope you find all you are looking for below.  Cowboys & Aliens is currently slated for a July 29, 2011 release.

S. Anderson treated us with a 3-D presentation of the film’s trailer and a really kick-a$$ clip from the movie.  Wow! It really looked awesome.  Along with Anderson, Milla, Ali Larter and Wentworth Miller were on hand to talk about the film and field numerous questions from the audience.

I don’t have many notes from this panel as I was stuck on a ledge in the front row of the press pit the entire time, but I have no regrets.  The footage they screened had me drooling.  I cannot wait to check this one out, in 3-D of course.  One of the more humorous moments that I can recall was when a fan asked Milla if she could say multi-pass.  She did of course, in perfect Fifth Element tone.  It was great.  Milla even said she had not done that in a long time.  LOL.  So anyway, enjoy the pictures below and remember to support Milla and the rest of the gang by checking out Resident Evil: Afterlife on September.

The film, which will see a limited a limited release in Fall 2010, could not get an R-rating.  Sadly, Adam Green, as he is accustomed to, had to go to trial and petition his rights.  But thankfully, he was able to secure a major theater chain and it will be the first time in cinema history that they will show an unrated movie.  It’s not certain as to how widespread the release will be, but c’mon, this is good news for all us horror folks.  And I have to tell you, it’s ridiculous.  We were shown the trailer twice and numerous clips and while the footage could be considered borderline obscene and violent, it’s nothing I have never seen before with an R-rating stamp of approval attached to it.  I don’t know what’s wrong with the MPAA sometimes.  Adam could not disclose the name of the theater chain that will be showing it, but Dark Sky will distribute the film.  I just hope it comes to Blu-ray as I know better not to hold my breath waiting to see this gem ever shown in a Cleveland, OH theater, I think.

Over the course of the 45-minute something panel, we were shown clips that added up to a number of 8 kills.  Adam promised us 8 kills and that’s exactly what we got.  Isn’t it funny how life works sometimes?  You go some place for one reason and leave with a totally different perspective in life.  Thanks Adam.  It was nice meeting and conversing with you.  I hope to catch up with you sometime soon.  I want to hear more about your ghost-hunting club.  I wish you nothing but the best with Hatchet II and future projects.  I’m going to check out Frozen ASAP.
