Limitless: Nobodies to Somebodies
Eddie More (Bradley Cooper) is a burnt out writer that discovers a top-secret pill called NZT that unlocks 100% of his brain’s capacity, making him incredibly successful in everything he does. Before discovering NZT, Eddie is a mess in every sense: mentally, physically and financially. Eddie evolves right before our eyes as his mind-bending talents and visions bring him big money, beautiful women and limitless prosperity. Eddie’s dream world comes tumbling down on his head as the drug’s intense side effects begin to take their toll and he finds himself entangled with a power hungry Wall Street broker (Robert DeNiro) that wants to take it all away.
Eddie isn’t the only character in film to clean up his act. We’ll take a look back at some of our favorite films where other characters have done complete 180′s, including Jerry Maguire, As Good as It Gets and American History X. Here, we take a look at other famous on screen characters that have evolved from nobodies to somebodies.
Jerry McGuire was an ego hungry sports agent that lived to get the biggest deals for his clients. He begins to have second thoughts about his work, which causes him to lose his job. He soon changes his “Show me the money!” view when he meets love interest, Dorothy (Renee Zellwegger) and her adorable son. Dorothy breaks down Jerry’s egotistical walls as he falls in love her, which enables him to grow as a man.
AS GOOD AS IT GETS
In As Good as It Gets, Melvin (Jack Nicholson) is a stubborn, bigoted novelist with OCD. The balance of Melvin’s life gets shattered when his neighbor, Simon (Greg Kinnear), appoints him to care for his dog. It soon becomes an eye opening experience that begins his transformation. He also gets romantically involved with his favorite waitress, Carol (Helen Hunt), an overworked single mother that eventually makes Melvin decide that he wants to be a better man.
In this modern day Cinderella story, a prostitute named Vivian (Julia Roberts) gets the opportunity of a lifetime when a successful businessman, Edward (Richard Gere), picks her up on Hollywood Boulevard. Edward pays Vivian to spend the week with him in Beverly Hills where she goes on a shopping spree and gets a lesson on manners from a hotel manager. Ultimately with the help of Edward, Vivian is able to put her street walking days behind her and transform into an elegant woman.
AMERICAN HISTORY X
Neo-Nazi Derek (Edward Norton) is locked away in prison for the murder of two young black men after breaking into his car. In his three years in prison, Derek acquires a different outlook when he compares a group of white-power prisoners and his black prison laundry co-worker, and friend, Lamont (Guy Torry). Derek gets out of prison a changed man and is determined to instill the same lessons into his younger brother, Danny (Edward Furlong). Sadly, it transpires too late in their lives and the consequences are tragic.
Lester goes through quite the transformation in American Beauty, except the changes that Lester undergoes are a bit backward when he begins to connect with his adolescence. We meet Lester as he’s living the life of a middle-aged unhappily married man. One day, he decides he’s had enough of the dullness of his day-to-day existence so he takes up smoking pot and begins to work out. Lester builds his confidence and develops a crush on his daughter’s best friend. Creepy factor a side, Lester transforms from a nobody to a somebody as he becomes self-aware and develops his spiritual happiness.
In Miss Congeniality, Gracie H art (Sandra Bullock) is lacking grace, poise and style but she needs to turn into a professional beauty pageant contestant for her FBI assignment. They hire a professional beauty pageant guro to get her on the right track. The results are amazing when Gracie is transformed from mean-street ready to dream queen in the waiting. In the process, she develops a relationship with a fellow FBI agent (Benjamin Bratt) and allows her feminine side to shine through. In her transformation, Gracie learns that underneath her tough cop exterior, it’s okay to feel like a woman!
