A Marvel Summer Movie Trailer Threesome

I don’t tend to post many news items, but today saw the release of the first trailer for X-Men:  First Class, the prequel/reboot of the comic book movie series.  With this new trailer out, we now have footage from all three Marvel Studios superhero movies that are going to be released this summer, which also includes Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. While there are other comic book films and huge blockbusters set to be released during what looks to be a very packed and entertaining summer, I still thought it would be nice to put together this post that highlights the three big Marvel flicks coming our way.

(More after the clips)

X-Men:  First Class (June 3rd)

Thor (May 6th)

Captain America:  The First Avenger (July 22nd)

So there you have it.  While we don’t have a full trailer for Captain America yet, we have lots of footage and pics to get us excited for the summer movie season, as far as these Marvel superheroes are concerned.  Of course, there are plenty of other potential blockbusters coming out during that time to get us even more pumped (I’m thinking specifically of Super 8, Cowboys & Aliens, and obviously – Transformers 3: Michael Bay Blows Up The Moon 3D), but I can talk about that more when I put up my most anticipated summer movie list, some time in April.  As far as these Marvel Studios flicks go, I think X-Men has tons of potential, Captain America looks quite promising, and the more ridiculous Thor can look, the better.  But what are everyone else’s thoughts?  Is there a superhero or character within these series that someone is really attached to?  Which do you feel could be the biggest hit? (I think I know which one won’t be)  Discuss.

X-Men looks pretty cool. Michael Fassbender will rock it.

I quite like the X-Men: First Class trailer and in theory I have faith in Matthew Vaughn but, I don’t know, I’m still not 100% convinced.

  3. Brian White

I’m most looking forward to Captain America!

The X-men First Class trailer is making my brain hurt! Why must they change the storyline! It doesn’t even resemble the comics.

I have to say…I had my doubts about hearing of X-men: First Class being a hit with moviegoers. But after seeing the trailer, I think it looks really good. Looking forward to seeing this one. Of the three though, I am more excited about Thor. My favorite Marvel character (along with Namor; Prince of Atlantis) as a kid. Cant wait. Love the site!!

None of the X-Men films have, let alone most of these Marvel Comic movies…

You could tell the storyline from a 2 minute trailer?

I’m with Gerard, Fassbender makes things great.

  7. Aaron Neuwirth

@Taygan315, nice. Glad to hear from a Thor fan. I am very curious about that flick the most, probably, just because I want to see how far over the top it goes. Plus it has a pretty solid cast. Though, it will still probably do the worst of the three.

I hope to see more integrated story lines in this years Marvel flics, and not just the post credits tid-bits! Furthermore, after watching the Cap trailer, I also reached out like Hayley Atwell and tried to touch those pecs when Cap came out of chrysalis.

  9. Matt Blane

Thor all the way. 1) He has a beard for facial hair February. 2) Natalie Portman. 3) If it comes out after February then refer back to 2.

  10. Gerard Iribe

Are they also keeping the Wolverine and upcoming Wolverine time in place? In Wolverine Professor X could still walk, but was already bald and older. What was the time period in the Wolverine period? Towards the end?

  11. Gerard Iribe

    *timeframe in place

  12. Aaron Neuwirth

It doesn’t explicitly say, but you were supposed to assume it was set around the 80s. Really, much of the logic in that movie is so poorly handled that I don’t think anyone is gonna really try to connect the two. But we’ll see.

X-Men: First Class will be the best for sure, then Captain, then Thor. Those two are debatable though, Branaugh is a better director than Johnston, but Thor looks terrible and Captain looks decent.

We saw what happened when Gavin Hood( A talented director himself) tried to tackle Wolverine and how horrid that turned out. It appears Marvel is trying to pretend it doesn’t texist, with January Jones playing Emma Frost in this new film, and some young girl in Wolverine, which takes place later than this film, lol!

  14. Aaron Neuwirth

You can easily apply the same talented director statement to Vaughn. While I agree that X-Men will probably be the best of the bunch, the only thing that has me a little worried is how rushed that production was. I’m not counting out Thor either; it’s easy to see why this movie looks ridiculous, but that’s what it IS. It’s a movie about Norse Gods! It should be way over the top and not serious at all.

  15. Gerard Iribe

Vaughn directed 3 awesome films, though.

    Layer Cake
    Stardust
    Kick Ass

Hood had only directd Tsotsi and Rendition, but I heard that Richard Donner (thanks to his producer wife Lauren Schuler-Donner) came in and re-directed after Hood.

  16. Sean Ferguson

First Class is supposed to take place in the late 60s. Notice the furniture and decor and it’s easy to spot. Supposedly, it will also have a James Bond vibe.

  17. Aaron Neuwirth

Again, I have no doubts about Vaughn’s skill as a director, but he left X3 due to the rush on production and studio bullying (most likely). Now he’s back in another fairly speedy production. I’m optimistic, but I can see why a problem may occur.

And yeah, it’s in the 60s, JFK and Cold War is all over the place in the trailer, but the weird thing that Kyle and Gerard is pointing out is how Wolverine seems to no longer exist in this series.

  18. Gregg

Marvel has thrown continuity out the window! That’s the only explanation for the complete mismatch in time frames…or is First Class a franchise reboot? I have to agree with some of those comments above about First Class. I was not excited about it at all, but man, it does look like a damn good film based on the trailer. This will be a grand year for action films!

They look fun, I’m just happy that I can see nods to my favorite comics in mass media instead of terrible stories minus characters I like even in concept, inception and a couple others not withstanding. A frame of reference a fellow stumbler reminded me to think in terms of is the following: “think of them like a what if, which were issues or small one-shots not in continuum but still fun to think about and entertaining nevertheless.” Compromise has to be made in order for smaller minds to bridge the gap with comics I feel. Let’s enjoy them for what they are, which is mostly exaggerated homage and hyperbolism, such is the business of show. With this perspective in mind, I’m probably most excited about the “what if” x-men:first class, then Thor, then Cap, only because i didn’t see Cap throw any tanks yet. :-p

  20. Dan

What is wrong with all of you? Cap looks fantastic and Thor looks good for the sheer fact that he’s finally getting some recognition. First Class looks horrendous. Professor X was in the chair when he started the Xmen. He was also bald. Emma Frost is not part of the original, neither is Havok. Fox needs to stop making Xmen movies because after the first 2 everything has been absolutely terrible, Disney needs to buy the rights to Xmen back so Marvel can legitimately make an Xmen film.

  21. Gerard Iribe

Captain America’s costume design is awful, but the action seems to be in the right place. I’m actually looking forward to seeing Thor, though. In 2-D please.

  22. Aaron Neuwirth

Whoa, I really like the costume for America.
