‘The Way, Way Back’ Cast & Crew Interviews: Sam Rockwell And Maya Rudolph

sam rockwellThe Way, Way Back is the coming of age story of 14-year-old Duncan’s (Liam James) summer vacation with his mother, Pam (Toni Collette), her overbearing boyfriend, Trent (Steve Carell), and his daughter, Steph (Zoe Levin).  Having a rough time fitting in, the introverted Duncan finds an unexpected friend in Owen (Sam Rockwell), the gregarious manager of the Water Wizz Water Park.  Through his funny, clandestine friendship with Owen, Duncan slowly opens up to and begins to finally find his place in the world – all during a summer he will never forget.  This film is the directorial debut for Academy Award winners Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (The Descendants) and this is last of four posts where you will hear what the cast and crew had to say about being a part of the film.

This interview features Sam Rockwell and Maya Rudolph.  Sam Rockwell plays Owen, the owner of the water park and pretty much the coolest guy in any room he walks into, akin to someone like Bill Murray in Meatballs.  Maya Rudolph plays Caitlin, an employee at the water park, who does most of Owen’s work and is both humored and frustrated by Owen’s attitude towards work.  The two provided what was probably the most laid back conversation, even when very specific questions arise from one of the more determined journalists in the room.  Sam and Maya (who was quite pregnant) discuss their childhood summers, when they grew up, working on this film’s set and how everyone became a family of sorts, other coming-of-age stories, and what it’s like working on films versus theater and live performance.

The following clip is a recording of this interview, which was done in a roundtable style, featuring Rockwell, Rudolph, myself, and a few other film journalists.  I will note that there may be a few spoiler-ish elements discussed about the film, along with some language for those who may be concerned on that level.  Regardless, please enjoy the clip, as I had fun participating in the conversation!
