Viva Machete!

“They f****d with the wrong Mexican!” You ain’t never lied!  Chopped straight from the pages of Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror comes the tale of the man, the myth, the MACHETE! Featuring an all-star cast that include: Danny Trejo, Robert DeNiro, Jessica Alba, Jeff Fahey, Michelle Rodriguez, Don Johnson, Lindsay Lohan, Steven Seagal, and Cheech Marin, the film continues the tradition (at least in 2010) of eclectic casting (The Expendables and RED come to mind).  I was honored to have had a chance to screen the film before audiences and nearly had a stroke in doing so.  Machete kicked my butt!

Machete (Danny Trejo) is a former Mexican federal agent who after running into the evil Torres (Steven Seagal) decides to leave Mexico for the greener pastures of the USA.  Once in Texas, and situating himself as a day laborer, he’s met by shadowy forces and is given an offer he can’t refuse.  Kill the Senator (Robert DeNiro).  Machete is framed for the attempted assassination and declared outlaw number one.  On the run he will have to use every available improvisation to get past the bad guys in order to stay alive.

In his first leading role, Danny Trejo embodies the ultimate badass.  No questions asked.  Machete is AWESOME!  Please don’t go into the theater for some deep meaning mumbo jumbo.  It’s not that kind of a movie.  Then again, don’t leave your brain at the door either.  They do add in a bit of social commentary, but it moves the story forward and does not distract.

The technical specs are very impressive, and when the blu-ray hits, it will certainly be a reference disc.  I literally had to blink every time someone got hit, shot, chopped, smashed, etc., because it was uber loud!  Loud in a good way, though.  See it at a high quality theater in order to get the best out of it.

Machete goes into my top five list of the year.  Machete is a force to be reckoned with.  I have a feeling that Machete will return to kill, and then return to kill again after that. Call it a hunch.  Big props go out to Danny Trejo and kudos to Robert Rodriguez for letting him headline this feature film.  Respect.

Viva Machete!

I think I will rent this when it hits blu-ray.

The Machete blu-ray will be a director’s cut with a fully loaded package of extras. It’s going to be a Day 1 for me. I’m sure the cooking school will feature those “Machete” tacos they were making over at Comic-Con.

I’ll be seeing it again this weekend with the GF.

Rodriguez always does a good job with his dvd/blu-rays so I’m sure it will be loaded. I’ve always liked that he included recipes on the discs but I’ve never tried any of them yet.

  4. Gerard Iribe

Yeah, I’ve done both recipes from Once Upon A Time In Mexico and Sin City.

I hope I’m not alone on this, but I’d really like to see The Faculty get some sort of special treatment, although I hear that working on that was like Del Toro working on Mimic, with too much studio interference at play.

Regardless, yes – Machete and good recipes!

Did the recipes turn out any good?

  7. Gerard Iribe

    They sure did, Sean!

“Shorts” has a cookie recipe, but I’ve never gotten around to checking it out.

Sean…you don’t know what you are missing. 🙂

Since my Bday was Tuesday, I was unable to go to the press screening, but I am dying to check this one out tomorrow at the XD theater. My wife is taking me. Thinking about this film is the only thing getting me through these past couple of hectic days.

So more importantly…how is my girl in it? Was she any good? How did she look?
    Jessica Alba

    And what about sweet Michelle?
    Michelle Rodriguez

Once again, I’m happy about some elements of the movie like Jessica Alba, only to be brought down again by the inclusion of Michelle Rodriguez. 🙁 Why does she keep getting cast in so many movies?! Sigh.

@Sean Michelle is hot. She’s kind of redeemed herself with her last couple of roles. I was starting to get annoyed, because she kept getting in trouble with the law. Looks like she’s actually happy now.

She’s hot in person, btw. Smoking hot. Just sayin’.

I think Jessica Alba is better looking myself but I know you and Brian love Michelle. I think you are right though about her being more happy now that she is with Kristanna Loken.

  12. Gerard Iribe

@Sean she’s no longer with Loken. That was like 3-4 years ago, I think. I saw Jessica Alba in person at the screening and she’s uber fine. I think having that baby made her really fill out. She used to be all skin and bone. Not anymore.

There’s no denying that Alba is finer than Rodriguez. 🙂 I’m just so happy that Gerard is finally saying kind things about Jessica. About Michelle…she even said at Comic Con that she stereotypes herself and she has no other desire to do different roles. I guess u have to respect her wishes and not trash her for that. Like for me…when I act I only want my leading lady to be Jessica Alba or Odette Yustman. 🙂 you going to hold that against me?

  14. Sean Ferguson

To each his own! But I can still trash her for still doing the same role over and over even if she does intentionally do it. 🙂
