Son Of Saul (Blu-ray Review)

son of saul coverThere was little doubt that Son of Saul would not win the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar and with good reason. This Hungarian film is terrific in what it attempts to do, how it accomplishes its task and how it does plenty more to make it a very engrossing and watchable experience, despite the incredibly harsh subject matter that is the Holocaust. Writer/director Laszlo Nemes has made an incredible debut feature film and all of the awards it has won this past year were well deserved. Now Son of Saul is on Blu-ray, where a much wider audience can hopefully discover this tremendous film.

Mojave (Blu-ray Review)

mojave coverMojave is described as a taut thriller revolving around a suicidal artist and a homicidal drifter. It comes from writer/director William Monahan (The Departed), who has essentially made the inverse of Seven Psychopaths by writer/director Martin McDonagh. Where that film was clever, self-reflexive and wildly entertaining, Mojave is pompous and dour. Of course, it does feature an off-kilter performance from Oscar Isaac, among other things, so it is time to see how the Blu-ray stacks up.

Silicon Valley: The Complete Second Season (Blu-ray Review)

Silicon Valley Season 2Working in the IT industry myself I can’t tell you what a breath of fresh air it is to see people going through the same stress, trials and tribulations as myself in the industry, but presented in a comedic fashion unlike Batman v Superman (sorry could not help it with that jab).  I may not be involved directly per se in a tech startup, but I know how things work in corporate America and sometimes HBO’s hit comedy series Silicon Valley hits oh so close to home.  You can read all about my take on Season One in my 2014 Blu-ray review over here, but today we’re here to discuss everything Season Two, which is finally making its long awaited, anticipated Blu-ray release on April 19th.   What say you?  You ready?!  Like Lady Gaga, I was flippin’ born to review this one.  Here we go! the forest coverThis year’s early January horror release was The Forest, which allowed Game of Thrones’ Natalie Dormer a chance to take the spotlight in a leading role in a film focused on making a ghost story out of the infamous Aokigahara Forest in Japan. Of course, the key words there were ‘early January horror release’. I missed this one in theaters, but have now had the chance to check it out on Blu-ray. Find out if this simple thriller is spooky enough to watch at home or if you should take a hike elsewhere.
