With a strong cast and a talented writer/director at the helm, remaking the 2009 Argentine film The Secret In Their Eyes (which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film) seemed like a decent enough idea. I am happy to recommend the original film, as it is strong piece of filmmaking in al regards. This Americanized-version, however, comes up lacking. Still, there is a solid Blu-ray here to behold, with some solid work from those involved in the film that maybe makes Secret In Their Eyes worthwhile. Find out in this Blu-ray review.

Starburst Magazine says “Narcopolis Will Leave Viewers Buzzing, Dazed And Desperately Jonesing For The Next Hit.” I don’t know if that’s a film-related magazine or if its a fan club newsletter for people who really enjoy a certain kind of candy. Anyway, this one will be coming your way to Blu-ray on March 1st. Continue reading ‘Narcopolis (Blu-ray Review)’

I was intrigued to see a new film from the director of Children of Heaven, starring The Good, The Bad, The Weird’s Lee Byung-hun. Memories of the Sword is a historical drama that balances epic drama with thrilling swordplay and martial arts. The film is every bit as lavish as you would expect and the Blu-ray’s technical presentation certainly supports that. However, being another film that takes on the dreamlike atmosphere of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon can only take you so far if the story is not that engaging.

It is not at all rare to see a biopic focused on a tortured genius arrive in theaters during the later months of the year for awards consideration. This is why Steve Jobs easily succeeds, as the Danny Boyle-directed film follows an unconventional structure, setting it apart from the pack. As a result, Aaron Sorkin‘s brilliant script has evolved into one of the most electrifying films of the year. Sadly, it bombed in theaters, but you can now get your hands on this solid Blu-ray package.

When I first saw of this film’s title, I thought, “Wow! A movie about the Freemasons!” However, that was not the case. The 33 is in fact a film about the horrible Chilean mine collapse that took place in 2010, trapping 33 miners in its depths (200 stories down, to be exact). While these hard-working souls went into the belly of the earth to literally do the dirty work of others, it was an unbreakable bond that would soon forever bind the group of men as they attempted to survive being buried alive.
