Kori’s Top 10 Films of 2014

Top 10Well another year has come and gone, leaving in its dust quite a year in Hollywood. We had the tragic and shocking deaths of Philip Seymour Hoffman and the beloved Robin Williams. Sony released, pulled and re-released the controversial film, The Interview, due to cyber threats and their systems getting hacked by North Korea. This move by Sony threw us all into a fury, making us as Americans wonder why we are negotiating with such a terrible person (Kim Jong Un). I am sure glad that Sony came to their senses because The Interview was HILARIOUS!!

Ok, enough negative talk, let’s get to reason of my post. I want to share with you my Top 10 list of must see movies in 2014. Unfortunately there were a couple of films that I did not get around to seeing that I am sure would have made this list, but what can you do. I live in TX and not LA where they are lucky enough to get all the screenings the year they officially come out. I seem to be getting side tracked again, sorry. Let’s get to it shall we? Take a look at my list below and please feel free to comment on my list. I will not get upset if you disagree, but might like you more if you do.

The Guest#10 The Guest – From the director of You’re Next and V/H/S 1&2, Adam Wingard directed this latest movie and I absolutely loved it!!! This is a story about a soldier that shows up at the Peterson family home, claiming to be a friend of their son who died in the war. After a series of accidental deaths, their new house guest soon becomes a suspect and all hell breaks loose. This was one I did not have a chance to see until late December. I don’t know how this one snuck past me. I absolutely love these kinds of movies and this one did not let me down.

Birdman#9 Birdman – Quite honestly this is one of the movies that I really knew absolutely nothing about going into it. I was just happy to be heading to the Alamo Drafthouse for lunch. I must admit that from the moment the movie started I was entranced. It seems that Birdman is about a washed-up actor trying to regain the spotlight, but if you look closer it manages to be something totally different.

Johm Wick#8 John Wick – Keanu Reaves is back and hotter than ever!! John Wick succeeds where a lot of recent action movies do not. This movie is full of ass kicking! There is no downtime here, it comes out of the gate with a great story to capture your attention and awesome brutal beat downs that have you flinching in your seat. This is a movie about a former hitman who finds himself as the target of a one-time friend when a contract is put out on him.

The Equalizer#7 The Equalizer – Let me start out saying that I am a huge Denzel fan. Denzel is a former black ops commander that settled down in Boston just trying to live the simple life. That is until he befriends a young girl that happens to find herself in a lot of trouble. Denzel is a complete badass in this film as he takes on the Russian mob to get justice for his friend.

Nightcrawler#6 Nightcrawler – Wow! What a movie!! Jake Gyllenhaals’ transformation for this role is just unbelievable. Gyllenhaal stumbles upon an independent film crew that shows up at the scene of a terrible traffic accident and watches them in action. This starts a whole new world for him as he starts his new career in freelance crime journalism and quickly learns the meaning of the saying, “If it bleeds, it leads.”

Boyhood#5 Boyhood – I cannot say enough great things about this movie. Boyhood takes place over a 12 year time period. The cast filmed for one week a year for 12 years. That is dedication my friends. This is a chronicle of a young man’s life. We get to follow him through the good times as well as the bad times and everything in between. I have to admit that when it was over I felt like I lost a part of my family. I felt so connected to Mason that I wanted to see him through the rest of his life.

Gone Girl#4 Gone Girl – I am sure you already knew this, but just in case you didn’t, Gone Girl is an adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s smash hit novel Gone Girl. I did not read the book prior to going into the theatre to watch this incredible movie and I am so glad I didn’t. I was able to blindly ride along with this roller coaster of a movie. I almost got motion sickness from all of the twist and turns along the way. This is one that cannot be passed over.

Interstellar#3 Interstellar – Well I have officially seen this one 4 times in the theatre. Yes you read that correctly, I said 4 times, and I have to tell you that it got better each time. I was able to pick up things that I did not notice before. There is a whole lot to take in with this movie. As planet Earth is slowly dying the only thing we can do is to try and find another inhabitable planet to start over on. Interstellar manages to give audiences quite a ride into the “fifth dimension.”

Guardians of the Galaxy#2 Guardians of the Galaxy – This is another one that I saw 4 times in the theatre. I loved this one so much that we named our puppy named after the infamous Star-Lord. Chris Pratt was absolutely brilliant and in my opinion they could not have casted a better Star-Lord. Chris Pratt becomes the unlikely leader of a group of misfits who must stop the bad guy from destroying the galaxy. I promise you will have loads of fun with this one!!

*

*

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes#1 Dawn of the Planets of the Apes – 10 years after a virus decimated humanity and gave rise to the lab tested apes that had survived to become the dominate species left to rule, led by Caesar. It seems that the two sides, human and ape, had come to a mutual understanding and peace, but this does not last and very soon a war will start that no man or ape is ready for. The outcome will determine which species will remain the dominant one. This is a movie that I just cannot say enough great things about!

John Wick!!! I must say though, I dobt get the fascination with Bird Man. Great acting. Super odd story that put me to sleep.

  2. Brandon Peters

    Heck yeah The Guest!

I’m totally down with 9 of your picks a lot. Was not a fan of The Equalizer (first act was awesome, tho, I’ll give it that)

I did 14, but we had 8 crossovers, which means we know what’s up!

Nice list! If I had twelve slots only list, you better believe John Wick and The Equalizer would have been on there. Like Brandon, you share 8 of the same titles from my list. Fate!
