I went into my viewing of Byzantium wanting to like it so much because of my love for the can do no wrong actress, in my opinion, Gemma Arterton. So the truth be told that whenever you do something like that you’re almost guaranteed to set yourself up for failure and utter disappointment (point in case Man of Steel this summer). And when that doesn’t happen, then by God that’s when you know you just experienced a damn miracle. No, Byzantium is not the second coming of Christ, but who in their right mind would compare such a revolutionary event like that to a film’s quality (unless we’re talking Fight Club)? However, if you go into Byzantium with a bloody thirsty seeking of re-experiencing another satisfying tale akin to that of Interview With The Vampire with societal emphasis on themes of brotherhood, okay motherhood, and what it’s really like mentally and socially to live for over two centuries, then I can’t imagine you could ever walk away from this one disappointed. That’s my story and I’m “staking” to it. Continue reading ‘Can I “Permanently” Check Into ‘Byzantium’? (Movie Review)’

Star Trek: Enterprise recounts the adventures of the pioneers of space travel who ventured into the universe 100 years before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. Set in the 22nd century, in a time when interstellar travel is still in its infancy, Enterprise follows Captain Archer and his crew of brave explorers as they set out to chart the galaxy on a revolutionary spacecraft and experience the wonder and mystery of the final frontier as they seek out new life and new civilizations. A centerpiece to the Star Trek: Enterprise – The Complete Second Season Blu-ray collection is the newly produced cast reunion feature, “In Conversation: The First Crew,” which offers fans a look at an intimate and candid discussion with members of the main cast and recurring guest stars, who reveal their most memorable stories from the set and their favorite behind-the-scenes moments. The reunion is moderated by series co-creator/executive producer Brannon Braga. Fans will also enjoy “Uncharted Territory,” a three-part retrospective providing an inside look at the challenges faced by the writing staff and creators during the creative development of the second season, which ultimately inspired the controversial Xindi story-arc that kicks off in the season finale, “The Expanse.” Continue reading ‘Star Trek: Enterprise – The Complete Second Season (Blu-ray Review)’

October is box set month for Scream Factory. Not only will they be releasing the first 3 Amityville Horror films, they will make horror fans’ mouths wetter and wallets lighter with The Vincent Price Collection on October 22. Today they have released their detailed final list of bonus content for the release. They made an announcement a week ago that they intended to release the US cut of Witchfinder General (aka Conqueror Worm), but were unable to do so because of a legal issue. They could have released it, but would have had to cut a scene. Instead of compromising their product, they opted just to drop it. For fans, this is just another shining example of not selling us short on anything. This will be a grand release despite that. I can’t wait to revisit these! Preorder and a detailed look at the discs are below! Continue reading ‘Scream Factory Unveils Final Bonus Content Details For THE VINCENT PRICE COLLECTION’

Oh the world of computer-animated films. It’s no secret that somewhere along the line I almost stopped enjoying them. I can’t put my finger on why, but it just happened. Still, I intend to give such films the time of day if they managed to catch my eye. Not every animated film can be as amazing as How To Train Your Dragon, but there is always the possibility of entertainment value to be had. So when a story of forest-dwelling creatures caught my attention back in the spring, I made it a point to eventually check it out. Blue Sky Studios’ Epic is now on Blu-ray, but did it fall short like so many other computer-animated films I’ve watched, or did it prove to reach my expectations?

On August 25th, I was happy to attend a screening of Cowboy Bebop: The Movie at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica, which was then followed by a panel discussion featuring actor Steve Blum (voice of ‘Bebop’s lead character Spike Spiegel) and director and illustrator Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians). As a huge fan of the popular anime series and the film it spawned, it was exciting to see the film on the big screen again (I was fortunate to see the film during its very limited, original theatrical run in America, back in 2003), but also a very fun panel to listen in on afterward. Continue on to listen to the entire Q&A and learn more about this fun event.

Scream Factory continues to roll out and lay claim to King Of Jon Carpenter Blu-rays this November. They will be releasing what I can easily say will be a superior version of his cult classic Assault On Precinct 13 November 19 (this has already been released before through a different distributor). The week prior, they will be releasing the rare film Body Bags. The horror anthology that collaborates Carpenter with legend Tobe Hooper may be somewhat of a forgotten title to many. This trilogy of terror was only released on DVD in a brief stint by Artisan and quickly went out of print when they were no longer in business. Its a fun little film that features John Carpenter himself hamming it up as the host of the 3 short films. Also making appearances are Sam Raimi, Tobe Hooper, Wes Craven, Tom Arnold, David Warner and Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill. This marks the 6th and 7th John Carpenter related releases from Scream Factory. Get in your preorders and find more detailed information after the link! I’m not going to lie, the zombie craze and obsession we live in today makes me happy. Yes, we’re flooded with tons of bad repetitive low budget productions, but there are plenty of good zombie movies that have entered the vault. The zombie film can take many shapes and forms. One that works particularly well is the zombie comedy. Up with the likes of Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland, comes the very competent, funny and gory Cockneys Vs Zombies. This one is an import from England and only had a short limited run here in the states earlier this month. Don’t be fooled by the title (its reminiscent of straight to video dreck), I assure you, this one is quality. You’re not getting a SyFy movie or something shot in a 20 year old’s parents’ backyard. This is one I’m hoping people have the courage to check out, because it is quite funny and has some nice gore effects. Continue reading ‘Cockneys Vs Zombies (Blu-ray Review)’

I was just talking about the effectiveness of simplicity in another review and now we have a simple and efficiently made horror flick, titled You’re Next. Despite having been lingering around for a couple years, this is a horror flick that has maintained its positive buzz since debuting at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival and ends up delivering. Besides some minor details, You’re Next is by and large a straight forward slasher film that does not do anything new for the genre, but is a ruthless exercise in solid horror filmmaking. It is sufficiently scary, features victims you generally feel bad for, and knows how to be both frighteningly violent, but also entertaining. Cabin in the Woods may have done a number on the state of horror features, but You’re Next sticks to the basics and makes it work anyway.

It is always an interesting task, when it comes to providing a critique of one of you most anticipated films of the year from one of your favorite filmmakers. The World’s End is the final entry in the thematically connected “Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy”. The films that led up to this finale are 2004’s Shaun of the Dead and 2007’s Hot Fuzz (both of which are favorite films of mine). All three of these films were written by Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg, with Wright directing each film and Pegg starring in each, along with his best mate Nick Frost. I noted the years, because The World’s End is arriving quite a bit of time after the last entry, but it is fitting, as The World’s End is about growing up, among other things. The creative team involved has developed as filmmakers over the years and this is reflected in how this film continues in the tradition of showing off madcap humor, action, and heart, but also finds a way to acknowledge how times have changed. I have also failed to mention that this is a wild ride with some big sci-fi surprises, but the core of this film is just as strong as its hilarious and exciting exterior.

So here’s a title that I profess to know nothing about going into the press screening last Thursday night at the brand new Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline here in Austin, TX. Now come on, how can one turn that offer down? I said the BRAND NEW Alamo Drafthouse! I’m probably only the 100th person to have sat in the chair I plopped my a$$ down in last week. So what were we talking about? Oh yeah this movie. It’s called You’re Next. Now I must admit, the movie poster had me intrigued many months ago on iTunes Movie Trailers so I did what any outstanding American citizen would do. I watched the trailer. And…I wasn’t impressed with it. It felt old and tired…like a rehash of The Strangers or something along those lines that we’ve seen a million times now. So needless to say, I never intended to cover this one, but come on….THIS IS THE NEW ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE BABY! The word decline was not even a possible choice in my vocabulary as far as I’m concerned.
