New Star Trek Into Darkness Trailer And Posters

kirk 2I know I am in the minority of not being as excited as many others for the new Star Trek film, Star Trek Into Darkness, but here is a post with several new posters and the latest trailer.  Additionally, here is a plot synopsis:  In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.  Continue on to see the posters and trailer.

‘The Place Beyond The Pines’ Presents A Sweeping Story Of Crime, Corruption, And Motorcycles! (Movie Review)

place beyond the pines whysoblu thumbI recently watched Blue Valentine for the first time.  This was the 2010 anti-romance/drama that first brought together writer/director Derek Cianfrance and star Ryan Gosling.  There was a lot of good to be found in that film, particularly from co-star Michelle Williams, but the film was not without its issues.  That said, Cianfrance left a good impression of a director I was curious about seeing more from.   The Place Beyond the Pines is Cianfrance’s follow-up effort to Blue Valentine, and it really feels like a fantastic accomplishment from a director who is even more confident in what he can bring to the screen.  It is a film that has an ambitious story to tell and it does so with enough confidence to unfold slowly, mixing in high moments of tension and emotion.  Add to that some truly great performances from some of the film’s key players and you have what is already one of the great dramas of 2013.

The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg (DVD Review)

There was a golden era of baseball that has long since passed. It covered a time that spanned the years before and shortly after World War II.  The teams of this age consisted of rosters that held the names of some of the greatest that ever played the game. There were those dangerous with a bat like Ted Williams and Babe Ruth and those who shut down the opposition from the mound like Dizzy Dean and Bob Feller. While these men and their teammates had their highs and lows, none of them faced the struggles and hurdles like the late, great Hammerin’ Hank Greenberg.

‘42’ Is An Old-Fashioned Story Of An American Legend (Movie Review)

42 thumbI don’t acknowledge this very often, but I like to bookend my reviews with quotes from the film.  Sometimes they sum up the film in a sense and other times they are just quotes I enjoyed the most.  The two I have chosen for 42, a film that chronicles the introduction of Jackie Robinson into Major League Baseball, are featured in the film, but are also actual quotes from the men who said them.  They are not the most inspiring words I have ever read, but 42 also isn’t the most inspiring movie I have ever seen.  Regardless, it is a film that I have wanted to see, as the subject matter is important.  While the film is only good, as opposed to great, it is occasionally quite moving, well made and acted, and a fitting tribute for a man who mainly just wanted to play baseball.

Broken City (iTunes HD Digital Download Review)

Broken City (iTunes HD Digital Download Review)So I’ve heard mixed things about the Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta-Jones 2013 crime thriller, Broken City.  Sadly, I missed the press screening when it was previewed in my area and I altogether missed the theatrical release so needless to say I was thrilled when I recently offered the chance to review the DHD version of it.  For those of you that don’t know, DHD stands for Digital HD, Fox’s early access to newly released blockbuster films you can watch anytime and anywhere weeks before the film’s Blu-ray and DVD release, often with a discounted price of $14.99 or so.  But like I was saying, I accepted the chance to check this movie out in advance before all the Blu-ray and DVD critics get their colloquial paws on their respective review products and be one of the first, the elite, to tackle this one on the World Wide Web.  So without further ado, let’s take a private eye look at Broken City, through the eyes of yours truly…me!  Continue reading ‘Broken City (iTunes HD Digital Download Review)’

That Thing You Do! (Blu-ray Review)

that thing you do whysoblu cover-001That Thing You Do! was the directorial debut of Tom Hanks from back in 1996 and it is still a joy to watch.  The film is a light-hearted look at a fictional band that became a one-hit wonder sensation during a summer in the 60s.  The film features a simple, but very accessible story, fun performances from the cast, and a very catchy single.  While it was only a decent success at the box office, during its theatrical run, much like The Sandlot, That Thing You Do! has remained a very enjoyable film that has found an audience over time.  It must have to do with it being such a delightful film to watch that is full of energy.  Read on to find out if the Blu-ray is wonderful or not.

This Must Be The Place (Blu-ray Review)

This Must Be the Place whysoblu cover-001If someone were to ask me what one of the quirkiest premises for a movie was, I would probably respond with the plot for This Must Be the Place, a comedy-drama, which stars Sean Penn as a retired rock star who goes on a mission to find a Nazi criminal.  For those who just said, “Huh?”  Yes, that is the premise of this film, which I found to be surprisingly effective in what it was trying to do.  It features a strong performance from Penn, who delivers a very interesting character, unlike anything I have seen him in before and is also an interesting movie on the whole, given how it plays out.  Now the Blu-ray is available for all to check out and I think it may be worth the time of anyone who is interested by this premise or the presence of Penn in this type of role.

The Impossible (iTunes HD Digital Download Review)

Well geez…what can I tell you that you don’t already know already about this film?  If I told you it was the feel good movie of the year, would I be lying?  Well, I guess that depends upon what makes you feel good in life.  If you like a heart wrenching, but uplifting tale of a family that defies all odds amidst a natural disaster that the whole world was caught up in the middle of watching, then this probably is the film for you.  If you are one of those naysayers who says why do I want to be depressed and bash this film without even seeing it, then I want you to skip reading this review right now because Evil Dead is currently out in the theaters and you probably belong there anyway.  For those of you that are still here with me…congratulations.  You have taken your first step towards being a better human in this world.
