‘Stoker’ Shows The Deadly Bonds That Tie Families Together (Movie Review)

Stoker is the English-language debut of Korean director Park Chan-wook, who has previously made thrillers such as Oldboy and Lady Vengeance, which are known for depicting brutal subject matter within the frame of beautifully executed visuals.  Those familiar with his work can see that Chan-wook has a deep appreciation for filmmakers such as Hitchcock and he has gone on to make films that echo that sort of work at a more extreme level.  Stoker is very much indebted to Hitchcock, as well as Brian DePalma, among others, given how the film portrays a level of suspense in such an effective manner.  The film is a psychological drama as well as an American Gothic horror film that Park Chan-wook really directs the hell out of.

Justice League of America – Issue #1

Detective Comics, or more commonly known as DC, has been churning out some very solid titles since the launch of their New 52 line in 2011. We’ve recently seen the launch of a new superhero known as Vibe. The timing of this new character’s own title was no mistake as it was brought to us just in time for the anticipated release of the third Justice League series. No it’s not overkill. There is a point to all of this.

The Master (Blu-ray Review)

Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, The Master, finds Joaquin Phoenix’s character being absorbed into the world of a charismatic intellectual played by Philip Seymour Hoffman.  The result is a film that is ambitious, greatly acted (Phoenix, Hoffman, and Amy Adams have all found themselves Oscar nominated for their roles), expertly filmed, but also challenging to fully involve myself in.  For a film that is so centered on two key performances, I felt an odd distance to the film as a whole, which made it difficult for me to embrace, despite having so many great scenes throughout.  Matching up with other films that could be considered too esoteric for mainstream audiences (Tree of Life), I will be curious to see where The Master ends up standing within Anderson’s body of work, as far as the director’s fan base is concerned.  Regardless, the film is beautiful to watch (its cinematography is one of the biggest Oscar snubs of 2012) and looks wonderful on Blu-ray.  Continue to learn more about my thoughts on this home media release.

‘The Sandlot’ Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary This March

This year is the 20th anniversary of The Sandlot, which has an all-new Blu-ray release coming out on March 26, 2013.  The Sandlot is a a charming story about young friends that just want to hang out and play baseball.  There is more going on than that, of course, as we see the boys’ deal with summer activities that include things such as small rivalries, fun at the pool, a baseball signed by Babe Ruth, and a huge dog known as “The Beast”.  This was a film from the 90s that I grew up loving and I still think it holds up quite well.  It is one of the better kinds of sports movies that does not involve a ‘big game’ and instead focuses more on the adventures these kids get into.  The Blu-ray may not arrive until March, but continue on to learn more about this upcoming release. Horrible Bosses’ Jason Bateman and Bridesmaids’ Melissa McCarthy lead the cast of Identity Thief, an all-star comedy in which a regular guy is forced to extreme measures to clear his name.  With everything to lose after his identity is stolen, he’ll find out how crazed you can get trying to settle a bad credit score.  Unlimited funds have allowed Diana (McCarthy) to live it up on the outskirts of Miami, where the queen of retail buys whatever strikes her fancy. There’s only one glitch: The ID she’s using to finance these sprees reads “Sandy Bigelow Patterson”… and it belongs to an accounts rep (Bateman) who lives halfway across the U.S.   With only one week to hunt down the con artist before his world implodes, the real Sandy Bigelow Patterson heads south to confront the woman with an all-access pass to his life.  And as he attempts to bribe, coax and wrangle her the 2,000 miles to Denver, one easy target will discover just how tough it is to get your name back.
