In 2019, DC Comics released a six-issue mini-series titled DCEASED, which was, if nothing else, one of the most gripping storylines the publisher has released to date. If it was described to you simply as DC’s most famous super heroes fight zombies, you might immediately revert to the thought of Marvel Zombies. However, this couldn’t be further from the reality of DCEASED in which many DC characters transformed into the undead. Building on that age old notion of the animated post-living, DC now brings us its latest mini-series, DC vs. Vampires.
Wes Anderson’s tenth studio feature, The French Dispatch, opens wide this weekend. Several regulars, such as Bill Murray, and newcomers like Jeffrey Wright fill the screen cover to cover in an unofficial sendup of The New Yorker. The news that Anderson grew up reading the Big Apple staple should shock no one. What might surprise, however, is how the film uses the layout of a magazine to tell multiple stories anthologically. Officially titled, The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun, this is a Wes Anderson film through and through. For better and well, honestly, there is no worse to be had. It’s a delight. 
Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho opens this weekend just in time to deliver October scares in swinging sixties London, baby (I had to make with an Austin Powers reference, right?). The film stars Jojo Rabbit’s Thomasin McKenzie and Anya-Taylor Joy as two British women who share a link from the present to the past – as well as stunning period-era outfits, fancy cocktails, and a big butcher knife. Infused with wall-to-wall décor that amps up the color grading to eleven alongside punchy editing, there’s no doubt Soho is crafted by the same bloke whose previous work included Baby Driver and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Still, this is first and foremost a horror tale, a first for the director. His debut, Shaun of the Dead, may have included zombies but more laughs than scares. Are you ready for excellent mod-era tunes, dancing, and blood?
Crazy to think this December will mark 25 years since Scream hit theaters and became a phenomenon that changed the horror genre. The upcoming fifth Scream film will have more years than between the influencer Halloween when it celebrated 20 years shortly after Scream‘s release. Paramount, the current home video rights holder, is celebrating the milestone with the 25th Anniversary Edition 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray release. A debut on the format, it showcases a new little featurette of reflection from the set of 2022’s Scream. The disc came out back on October 19th, but there have been some fulfilment issues getting this one out there, so some people have it and some don’t. Paramount Presents continues to be one of my favorite and more exciting little Blu-ray lines around today. And on November 2nd, they’ll be making a very exciting jump in their catalog with the 100th anniversary edition of the film The Sheik. Its an interesting piece for them to have as not only is it the oldest film to hit the Paramount Presents label, but the first silent film to be put in this lexicon. It’ll feature a meticulous new restoration accompanied by a score composed by Roger Mellon and a film historian providing a verbal essay of sorts on the history of the film. One of the more sad under performers at the US box office this year was James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Though, it did finish in the top 10 for global box office which is nice. The film was a breath of fresh air compared the that first whatever it was. Its made its way to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray, landing on shelves October 26th. The film comes loaded with a native 4K image and Dolby Atmos track to support it. There is also a James Gunn commentary and a host of featurettes to line up some nice bonus features. While I didn’t know much about the film at all prior to seeing the trailer, the fact that a film like The Protégé was getting a big theatrical release excited me. An low key action thriller with a star that isn’t quite a household name (At one movie I saw the trailer with an audience member loudly blurted out “Who the hell is Maggie Q?”) feels like the type of “big new streaming movie of the week” for the like of a Netflix, Amazon or Hulu. Alas, the film made nary a scratch during the pandemic era box office and is making its way to the home video market where hopefully more people will see it. It has been rather nice to see M. Night Shyamalan come back into the fold and shake the stigma of him being a has-been filmmaker. Having some well reviewed hits will tend to do that. Moving on from his Unbreakable series, he now sets sights for where his career can now go. First stop is Old, about a magic beach that rapidly ages people. The film was a rather solid hit at the box office this past summer. This high concept horror tale arrived on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray back on October 19th. Finally, the OGs of cinematic horror, the Universal Classic Monsters, are seeing their time in the…moonlight…for the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format. The original outings of Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monsters, the Invisible Man and the Wolf Man arrived in the Icons Of Horror Collection on October 5th. Typically they’ve unleashed a bigger set for their debut, holding out on The Bride of Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Phantom of the Opera and The Creature From the Black Lagoon this time out. Hopefully they are still to come. But, the good news is Spanish Dracula snuck its way on here AND its in 4K Ultra-HD. So this set may boast 4 movies, but in reality it is 5. So the curtain may be closed for this year’s Los Angeles based 
Dune, the much-anticipated epic, based on Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi novel, opens this weekend on the biggest (and smallest) screens in North America. As director Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049) has stated in interviews, anyone eager to drink in the vast desert vistas of the planet Arrakis, IMAX is the intended viewing experience. For those less inclined to venture out to theaters just yet, one hopes they at least have a big 4K TV to stream such a ginormous film on HBO Max. The all-star cast includes Timothy Chalamet, Oscar Issac, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, and even Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa, just to name a few. If you’re thinking, “HBO? Why isn’t this a series in the vein of Game of Thrones instead of a movie?” Well, for starters, I’d wager signing on the aforementioned cast of A-listers for several seasons of a series would not have been possible. But the real reason? This is big screen entertainment the likes of which Hollywood hasn’t attempted since arguably, Warner Bros’ own The Lord of the Rings trilogy two decades ago. Yes, I love the MCU like everyone else on planet Caladan… I mean Earth, but those movies aren’t even close to the scale of this project. Breathtaking set pieces, political intrigue, and the biggest space worms ever await on Arrakis, Dune, the desert planet… 
Experience an uplifting and poignant story of redemption when “Cry Macho” arrives for Premium Digital Ownership at home on November 5. The film is directed by Oscar winner Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby,” “Gran Torino”) from a screenplay by Nick Schenk and N. Richard Nash, based on the novel by Nash, and stars Eastwood, newcomer Eduardo Minett, Natalia Traven (“Collateral Damage,” TV’s “Soulmates”) and Dwight Yoakam (“Logan Lucky,” “Sling Blade”). The film will also be available on 4K, Blu ray and DVD beginning on December 7. 2021 marks the 50th year of Eastwood’s partnership with Warner Bros. (“Dirty Harry”). The film was produced by Eastwood, Albert S. Ruddy, Tim Moore and Jessica Meier, with David M. Bernstein executive producing. The film also stars Fernanda Urrejola (“Blue Miracle,” TV’s “Narcos: Mexico”) and Horacio Garcia-Rojas (TV’s “Narcos: Mexico,” TV’s “La querida del Centauro”).
