The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest is the final Swedish film adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy, which was preceded by The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played with Fire. Unfortunately, the series has delivered in diminishing returns. This film is in fact the weakest of the trilogy for obvious reasons. While the first two films delivered upon having both an incredibly interesting lead female character and intriguing mystery elements, this film robs us of both those aspects, delivering instead a merely average thriller. Get it? Blu-ray earns an easy A? I know. Stupid! Of course Blu-ray earns an easy A! Duh! Well anyway, what do we have here? This one is really for all the Amanda Bynes fans out there. Now why can’t I say that with a straight face? LOL. Okay, seriously. Emma Stone stars in the wickedly funny comedy everyone’s talking about, Easy A. That was obviously a line taken from the press release. Easy A earns laughs on Blu-ray this December. There’s that word again…”earns.” The Blu-ray will feature a gag reel, pop-up trivia and more. On Monday, November 1, 2010, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World was screened at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood and followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), its star Michael Cera (Superbad, Arrested Development), and the creator of the original comic book series, Bryan Lee O’Malley. This entertaining Q&A was moderated by director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy), which can be found in video form Here.

It’s more often than not when people discard their dreams in pursuit of a more “normal” life…whatever that is. At the end of this week, one of our own staff here on Why So Blu will be taking another big step towards accomplishing his dream. It was 13 years ago on September 19th when WSB writer Gregg Senko interviewed the Lord of the Dance himself, Michael Flatley. Greatly inspired by both the show Lord of the Dance and his discussion with Flatley, Gregg made it a point to immediately seek out an Irish dance teacher the next day. Megamind is the second animated feature this year (next to Despicable Me) to focus on the villain’s side of things. It comes from Dreamworks, whose animated features tend to range from satisfying, sweet, clever types to forgettable, pop culture-heavy, jokey types. This film falls somewhere in the middle, but on the positive side. It features top notch animation and some of the best 3D effects work that I have seen this year (alongside How to Train Your Dragon and Jackass 3D, respectively). There is a stellar voiceover cast present as well. Continue reading ‘Megamind Makes it Good to Be Bad…and Blue’

So I guess I was expecting better here. I did not necessarily expect to see a comedy classic in the making, but I did think that the talent involved in this film would have provided me with a consistently entertaining movie. Instead, what I observed was a film that was only occasionally very funny. I certainly laughed at some key scenes and chuckled at others, but the film as a whole really didn’t click into place as well as I was hoping it could have, which is a shame. What could have been a clever retread of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles for a new generation instead turns into a pretty standard road movie, with two quality actors in the lead roles. 127 Hours is a fantastically made dramatic thriller about survival and reflection. Based off of a pretty amazing true story about a mountain climber getting stuck in a horrible situation, this film does a great job of taking the viewer through this experience by injecting it with lots of energy, slick photography, a great soundtrack, and a wonderful lead performance from James Franco. The film has its share of thrilling moments, with one particularly hard to watch scene, but it is still well worth it, because the whole film is both gripping and poignant. Hey you guys! One of the greatest movies of the 80s is finally on Blu-ray as The Goonies 25th Anniversary Box Set with some fun extras. I’ve always loved this movie and I think this was a one of those rare movies that is a part of our cultural landscape and loved by most of my generation. You can’t go wrong when the movie was conceptualized by Steven Spielberg, written by Chris Columbus, and directed by Richard Donner and has a fantastic cast. I wanted to share with all our readers a little clip I got promoting the behind-the-scenes extras on the upcoming Gemma Arterton release, The Disappearance of Alice Creed. I’m looking forward to this one with much anticipation (as I do with every Gemma release)! The Anchor Bay film makes its Blu-ray debut this month on the 23rd. You should reserve your copy now and enjoy it over the hopefully long Thanksgiving holiday. Sounds like a perfect plan to me. Anyway, enjoy the short clips and press release below. I’ve been a big fan of horror movies since I was kid, and I’m not picky about the type. I love zombies, werewolves, vampires, serial killers, creature features – you name it. Good horror movies, and bad – I usually love them all. One thing I don’t have warm and fuzzy feelings about is the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. I usually find horror movies very entertaining, but not actually scary. As a child/teenager I found Freddy Krueger to be downright scary.

I suppose it can be construed that Director Todd Phillips took on this project to give himself some much needed distance from his previous surprise hit (The Hangover) before tackling his next project, The Hangover 2 (currently in production). I could completely understand if this was true and in all honesty, I would not blame him a bit before doing so. However, maybe he was forced to take on this. But really, who cares? What it all comes down to is the big question of whether or not his outing was successful? Continue reading ‘Don’t Miss The ‘Due Date’’

This is one film that I thought I would never have the pleasure of reviewing on the Blu-ray format. I’m glad to be mistaken. Why? Simply put, the more I have distanced myself from my summertime theatrical experience of Splice, the more I want to see it again. You know that old saying; absence makes the heart grow fonder? Well believe it or not, that’s exactly the relationship I have with Vincenzo Natali’s Splice. It’s one of those films that pushes the boundaries and shocks you. I was just about to call it a night when all the sudden an angel fell from heaven onto my desktop. Well actually it fell onto my Android phone, but desktop sounds better. Anyway, yes that angel was Jessica Alba’s…oops…I mean Robert Rodriguez’s Machete “official” Blu-ray announcement. And guess what ladies and gentlemen…we also have the “official” Blu-ray cover art now and I could not be happier! Jessica and Michelle both spend time on the cover. I like it! Machete will be released on the Blu-ray format from Twentieth Century Fox on January 4th. Continue reading ‘Rodriguez’s Machete Gets An Official Blu-ray Release Date!’

Just when you thought it was safe to venture out on the streets again those darn zombies are back and badder than ever! Here’s a movie I had some real fun with this year, Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D. I just got the press release today from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment confirming the 2D and 3D Blu-ray release date of December 28th. Man, I wish it came out before Christmas! Maybe they will do a little switcharoo with the date. Please Sony! Anyway, pre-order your copy today and check out the full press release below. Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the “Blu” water. LOL. The re-imagining of the classic Piranha movie was one I did not think I would enjoy, but after all the positive critic buzz I just had to check it out. Sure enough, I LOVED every minute of it! I mean sure, what’s not to love about it? It has a little bit of something for everyone. Yes, I said that seriously. LOL. And so it gives me great pleasure to announce that on January 11th, Piranha releases hell on both 2D and 3D Blu-ray. Check out the full press release below from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. You read about it in Rebel Without A Crew and now for the first time EVER, Robert Rodriguez’s El Mariachi comes home to the Blu-ray format on January 4th. Actually, all three movies in the trilogy will see a same day Blu-ray release. Exciting, huh?! I have been waiting a long time to see El Mariachi and I’m sure glad now that I held out for the definitive Bluy-ray version (that I’m sure it will be). Check out the full press release below from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and pre-order your Blu-ray set now! Continue reading ‘El Mariachi & Gang Shoot ‘Em Up on Blu-ray!’
