Though it underperformed in American theaters, here’s hoping the public doesn’t miss the boat again when A-Team comes out on Blu-ray this December. The film brought together a few of Hollywood’s heavy hitters along with some new arrivals as director Joe Carnahan entertainingly modernized the 80’s television series into a 2010 action movie. The film brought together Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, and Jessica Biel along with District 9’s Sharlto Copley and UFC fighter Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson for one big cleverly assembled ruckus fest. “Shakira, Shakira.” It seems like those are the most commonly used words “kind” people harmoniously respond with whenever I ask them if they are a fan of Shakira or not. And you know what? I seemingly never grow tired of it. You see, like the Arabic meaning of Shakira’s name, I have a lot to be “thankful” for when it comes to the music and hip-shakin’ moves of my favorite Colombian export. Frankenstein? Dracula? King Kong? I think not. If you really want to see one of the most feared movie monsters of all time, look no further than the Alien film franchise. It was back in 1979 when director Ridley Scott launched such a scare on unsuspecting movie-goers, that the eyeless, razor-grinning, slime-drooling, tail-whipping, parasitic-youth baddies made their lasting impression on international audiences. Additionally, the franchise rocketed the career of eventual sci-fi queen Sigourney Weaver, who became a fixture in all four Alien films. Continue reading ‘Alien Anthology Hatches on Blu-ray’

When Spielberg speaks, the media listens, and the heralded director recently announced a future project of his. Set for a 2013 release, Spielberg will commandeer the film Robopocalypse. Daniel H. Wilson penned the novel of which the film will be based off of. Unfortunately the book is not yet released, but the story, at least at face value, does not appear to be anything new. Robots take hold and revolt on their human constructors. Hmmm…rhymes with Terminator. It also sounds a little like IRobot (which doubled as an insomnia cure), but here’s hoping Robopocalypse isn’t as much of a snooze fest. Continue reading ‘Spielberg Announces Next Work’

As a quick message for those trying to go in as fresh as they can: This film works for what it is. If you enjoyed the first film, then you will most likely enjoy this film. It may not be perfect, but it achieves something that most horror movies, these days, don’t – it scared me. Similar to the first film, this film plays with a simple idea and covers much of the same ground that the first film did. However, with a change in location, use of multiple cameras, and a higher budget, this film manages to build upon what the first achieved as well as tie in nicely to the story that took place in the first. Although the contents of the Machete Blu-ray are still under wraps, fans of the movie have something to rejoice about…the Blu-ray pre-order is up on Amazon right now! Earlier today we showed you the Blu-ray cover art for Machete, but I most recently found out from the studio behind the film that the Blu-ray cover art was erroneous so I’m taking it down for the time being until we get the official artwork from Twentieth Century Fox. Here’s hoping it now showcases Jessica Alba. Continue reading ‘Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Machete’ Blu-ray Pre-Order!’

When it was announced that filmmaking wunderkind Robert Rodriguez would be taking over the reigns of the Predator franchise, the inner fanboy circle went nuts! When it was announced that Robert Rodriguez would only be producing the latest film in the Predator franchise, the inner fanboy circle kind of came to a screeching halt. Who would Robert Rodriguez get to fill the director’s chair? The answer to that would be: Nimrod Antal. The Hungarian director of the critically acclaimed film Kontroll, Vacancy, and Armored. Many will definitely be mislead by the title, but Monsters is a low budget sci-fi drama about two characters trying to get back home. While the film is certainly set in a world where aliens exist, with many scenes that show the destruction and changes in the world that have resulted from them, the film is in fact handled in a much more minimalist fashion. Structured as a road movie, the film is more about developing the relationship between two characters on a journey, with subtle commentary regarding immigration and government protocol, among other themes. When the Jonah Hex movie was announced I was really looking forward to it. I love westerns, it had a good cast, and I enjoyed the character in earlier DC Comics shows such as Batman – The Animated Series, Justice League – Unlimited and Batman – The Brave and the Bold. Hex was never popular enough to have his own show, but he did have several long running comic series which were popular. Continue reading ‘Jonah Hex (DVD Review)’

I don’t know what it is? Despite the ridiculous action at times and big gaping plot holes, I found myself really liking Angelina Jolie’s Salt. I’m not a big Jolie fan, but I can’t help being a sucker for her in action movies like Wanted and also in crime thrillers such as Taking Lives (God, I love that film). Anyway, my wait for Salt on Blu-ray is almost over as Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially declared a release date of December 21st for the deluxe unrated Blu-ray that contains 3 different versions of the film. Wow! Continue reading ‘Can You Pass Me the SALT on Blu-ray, Please?’

Stone is a meandering drama that makes sure to preach its themes pretty loud and clear, but also features very good performances from its stars. It deals with characters suffering from their own flaws and also looks to add some twists on atonement and what makes someone a sinner. Then you have the element of a sexually charged thriller to bring in the kids. Basically you have a lot of ins and outs for this OK film. “Welcome to a celebration of TRUTH, BEAUTY, FREEDOM, and above all things, LOVE.” Hallelujah! My “Holy Trinity” is now complete on Blu-ray! Well, what I meant to say is that I could not be happier now that my favorite three films of all-time are ALL finally on the Blu-ray format. Oh yeah, dummy me; I forgot to name the films, didn’t I? I guess you can tell that I’m excited, huh? Well duh! Words can’t even describe how enraptured I was to receive this Blu-ray title for review. Oh yeah, I almost forgot again, my three favorite films of all-time are Fight Club, The Dark Knight and finally, Moulin Rouge. Continue reading ‘Moulin Rouge (Blu-ray Review)’

MTV has a knack for releasing films that do not necessarily follow any one given path. For instance, take their most successful film franchise; Jackass. Johnny Knoxville and the boys have returned for a third and likely final go-around, but this time in 3D. Aptly titled, Jackass 3D, Knoxville, Pontius, Weeman, Steve-O and the rest of the gang have put together what is arguably the best of the three films, certainly outdoing the choppy humor of the second film in which lulls were abundant. A decent action comedy that I feel is going to get more love from general audiences than I had for it. I certainly enjoyed the movie overall, thanks to its casting and a couple of fun action scenes, but something about this film’s energy just did not hold up well throughout. While based on a much darker graphic novel, I was not as much disappointed with this film’s departure from the source material as much as I just didn’t really care for the story presented in this movie. To make a vague reference, this movie is more fun than it is good. Continue reading ‘RED – Reasonable Elderly Delight’

Troll 2 is a breathtaking study about the rights and grandeur of a small group of indigenous people and their struggle to survive. This profound movie is a serious look at the human condition and how individuals can triumph despite the societal norms and pressures placed on them. Superbly directed by film auteur Claudio Fargrasso (under the pseudonym of Drake Floyd to remain humble), and ably supported by hand-picked actors whose haunting and nuanced portrayals bring the characters to life, Troll 2 is a cinematic treasure that dazzles us with its wit and charm.
