This is without a doubt the funniest show on TV right now. Usually when a show this good is on TV that means that no one is watching it and it’s going to be canceled like Arrested Development. The good news is that that’s not the case this time as not only is the show doing well in the ratings but it’s also winning Emmys. Show-runners Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd who last produced the underrated Back To You, have rebounded from that cancellation with this expertly cast comedy. It’s a show that the entire family can and should enjoy together! Continue reading ‘Modern Family Season One (Blu-ray Review)’

“Since the dawn of the horror genre, filmmakers have consistently come up with inventive ways to chop up an endless string of damsels in distress. They could’ve just left these film deaths to the imagination, but where’s the fun in that? From knives to piano wire, these weapons are some of the bloodiest.” I thought the following article, sent by us from our friends over at SPIKE TV, is the perfect way for us to kick off and celebrate my favorite upcoming holiday of the year, Halloween! So sit back, relax and learn about all the tools of the trade. Enjoy this one! Continue reading ‘The “Top 10” Greatest Horror Movie Weapons’

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” – Edmund Burke
At last, we sadly come to the end. Third acts in movie franchises have historically been weaker than the movies that preceded them. There are rare exceptions to that but if you think about movies like The Godfather Part III or even Return of the Jedi (which I love), they just aren’t as good as the movies before them. The Return of the King is just as good as the previous two and in some ways even better. Continue reading ‘The Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King Theatrical (Blu-ray Review)’

With the vast array of comic book titles out there today, a bit of a yin-yang situation has been created as a result. If you’re the consumer, there has never been a better time to jump into comics. If you’re an aspiring writer or artist, it’s tough to stake your claim in the field, let alone release something that’s original. With that being said, two such creative minds have come together to buck the odds and bring us Chew. Continue reading ‘‘Chew: Omnivore Edition’ Has Big Bite’

After the critical and commercial success of The Fellowship of the Ring, the expectations were higher for The Two Towers. For Peter Jackson and crew, The Two Towers was the hardest movie to make out of the three because when their script was changed from two movies (as originally intended) to three, some major changes were made. The beginning of the film was actually supposed to be the conclusion of The Fellowship of the Ring and they changed to ending so that the Battle at Helm’s Deep would be the climax. Buried works with what it has, and it does it very well. What am I referring to? This is a film that takes place entirely inside of a coffin, unfolding the desperate situation that star Ryan Reynolds is in as he faces the task of doing everything he can do to get himself out of this very dire situation. In managing to pull out all of the tricks to make a story set in a very confined location function at a tense level for 90 minutes, this film is a great accomplishment. All I can say is one word…wow! Dexter is back and he’s taking no prisoners this time around! Dexter “Season 5 –Episode 1” was one of the best Dexter episodes I have ever laid eyes on and I felt the blood curdling need within me to write about it as soon as possible. It wasn’t because of the coldblooded murders and it wasn’t because of his never-ending weird quirkiness, but instead it was because of the different side we saw tonight of Dexter, his heart (his true love for the family: Rita, Astor, Cody, Deb and Harrison). Continue reading ‘Dexter is Back! Season 5…The Emotional Roller Coaster Begins…’

The greatest and most ambitious series of fantasy movies has finally come to Blu-ray! The Lord of the Rings trilogy represents one of the biggest gambles in modern film history as all three films were filmed at once with a director who was better known for small horror movies, not to mention the fact that fantasy films generally aren’t successful at the box office. Continue reading ‘The Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring (Blu-ray Review)’

Oliver Stone’s follow up to his popular 1987 corporate classic, Wall Street, puts me in a tough spot. On one hand the film has comes at a well chosen time, in true Stone form, by being topical and making observations about the economic world of today. It also features some very good performances not just from the original film’s Oscar winner, Michael Douglas, but from LaBeouf, Mulligan, Brolin, and Langella as well. A fairly standard adventure story about a plucky, young hero embarking on a quest to save those he cares for, aided by his friends while acquiring new skills and learning some lessons along the way. Like other, similar films, this one is based on a bestselling series of novels, but what separates it is the fact that the characters in this film are owls. Despite its familiar story and fairly cheesy basis, the film does benefit from being a very good looking animated feature, with many well staged flying sequences, some slick action beats and a solid use of 3D, all of which give the film a nice dynamic feel. Between Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and Tron Legacy, we’ve got the beginnings for calling 2010 the year of the distant sequel. Never Let Me Go is a moody science fiction film about love and death. While one not familiar with the popular book on which it is based may believe the film to be a dramatic period piece (which it rather is as well), yes, it is in fact a sci-fi film that really downplays those elements. In addition to this element, the film has a slow and quiet tone, aided by strong performances. Essentially, the film is a very melancholy sort of watch, but functions off an intriguing premise. While she is better known as an actress nowadays, Janeane Garofalo has been doing stand up for decades now. She won the title of being the “Funniest Person in Rhode Island,” after entering into a talent contest by Showtime and went on to continue doing stand up during the 80s but never really hit the big time until the 90s (a fact she mentions during the concert). In 1992, she was added to a ground-breaking new show called The Ben Stiller Show where she joined a talented cast that included Ben Stiller, David Cross, Bob Odenkirk, and Andy Dick. It all started with a website. Maybe it was a hobby, maybe it was a joke, but it all started as pixels and megabytes on a webpage. Officially located at www.FVZA.org, this site was and still is better known as the internet location of the Federal Vampire and Zombie Agency, courtesy of one Richard S. Dargan. Cleverly portrayed in a realistic light, the site contains articles and mythical descriptions of a range of supernatural beings from vampires, to zombies, to werewolves. Deliberately written in a serious light, it was this website that was to serve as an inspiration to one wildly dark piece of literature. Continue reading ‘FVZA Pursues Brooding Underworld’

Alright, it’s time for me to confess. As much as I said I hated the trailers for this film and as much as I bashed it every time I saw the trailers, I really want to watch Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and see what all the hype is about. There I said it. Hopefully after viewing, I will also admit I was wrong to initially bash it. There’s just too much positive vibe going around about this flick to not give it a chance. Heck, even our boy Aaron seen it like 4 or 5 times now (see his review here). I don’t know. I lost track, but the point is…I’m going to give this one a chance on the Blu-ray format November 9th. Continue reading ‘‘Scott Pilgrim’ Battles On Blu-ray in November’

Now here’s an offer you can’t refuse. How about bringing home two great Universal comedies on Blu-ray, Meet The Parents and Meet The Fockers, just in time for the holiday season and scoring free movie cash to see the third film in the series, Little Fockers, which will be released theatrically on December 22nd? Sounds like a sweet deal, huh? Well, it really is that simple. And it gets even better for me. It’s also a free chance for me to see my beloved Jessica Alba in Little Fockers. Bam! Instant Christmas present to myself. Both Blu-rays will see a November 30th release date. Continue reading ‘See ‘Little Fockers’ For Free w/ Blu-ray Movie Cash’

The folks over at Anchor Bay Entertainment have been mighty kind to us as of late hooking us up with such instant Blu-ray classics like Frozen, Evil Dead, Spartacus: Blood and Sand and Hatchet, so let’s give them yet another chance with their upcoming release of the sci-fi horror/thriller Altitude. The film takes off on Blu-ray and DVD October 26th. Why is the first time you are ever hearing of this film? I don’t know. I’m in the same boat, but they nevertheless managed to peak my curiosity as they always do. Continue reading ‘Anchor Bay Gains ‘Altitude’ on Blu-ray!’
