Salvage (DVD Review)

Revolver Entertainment has graced us with some horror DVDS for coverage and the first title that Why So Blu will be reviewing is something by the name of Salvage. Salvage comes to us from the UK and we are big UK horror fans here, so it’s no surprise that this title would be the first one on the to-do list. I’d never heard of Salvage before, but seeing all of the positive praise given to it on the DVD box I was actually kind of excited to tackle the project head on. That, and it’s Halloween, so why not indeed. How will Salvage do? Will it sink or swim? Will we be able to salvage it? Okay, that was a bad pun. Come on in and let’s see what we can see.  Continue reading ‘Salvage (DVD Review)’

Zombie (Blu-ray Review)

Awe yeah, here we go with one of the best, if not THE best, zombie film of all time – Lucio Fulci’s Zombie! I don’t need to tell you how this one is going to end, because if you’re a zombie or horror aficionado you’re already a fan of Zombie – it goes without saying, yo! I also don’t need to tell you that it’s been a Blue Underground kind of weekend too – in keeping with the Halloween spirit. Zombie is part one of our Lucio Fulci double-header, because we’ve got The House by the Cemetery on deck for review. With that said, kick off your shoes and prepare for some hijinx as we explore Zombie on Blu-ray.  It’s goin’ down! Continue reading ‘Zombie (Blu-ray Review)’

Torso (Blu-ray Review)

Up next, and perfectly fitting for the Halloween season we have some giallo horror brought to you from the fine folks over at Blue Underground where the horror train keeps on chugging along. Giallo, for a lack of a better word, refers to “thrillers,” but the term often lends itself to the Italian way of doing things. Dario Argento’s early stuff is all horror, but with a giallo twist. Torso can be considered a giallo horror thriller. In fact, I’d go far as to say that Torso is taken straight from the pages of of the Dario Argento playbook. Will it live up to its reputation or will it be a silly knock off? Let’s take a trip to Italy and find out!  Continue reading ‘Torso (Blu-ray Review)’

The Hagstone Demon (Blu-ray Review)

As I’ve previously mentioned in an earlier review, there’s nothing quite like getting a special package of horror flicks for review that you have never heard of. The difference with The Hagstone Demon is that it’s a Blu-ray. Score! Yep, never heard of this one, and the cover art doesn’t do it any favors either, but the description and some of the accolades it has received did peak my interest, but we’re not in it for preference. We have a job to do and we’re gonna do it. Sit back and relax as I bring you a horror film review of something that you may never have heard of – The Hagstone Demon. The 10th Victim (Blu-ray Review)

Oh yeah, the groovy 60’s are here, but not quite like you imagined them. The 10th Victim is technically a science fiction satire piece that revolves around a world where people hunt other people and take turns as the hunter and prey. Female or male – there is no discrimination based on sex. Game on! Italian superstar Marcello Mastroianni and sex Godess Ursula Andress heat up the screen in this visually provocative tale of sex, lies, deceit, and eccentricity. In fact, if you want to know where Mike Meyers got most of the ideas for Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery then you need to look no further as it’s all here. Blue Underground has brought us the Blu-ray of this 60’s gem, so let’s see how it stacks up in high definition, shall we?  Continue reading ‘The 10th Victim (Blu-ray Review)’

Phase 7 (DVD Review)

Wait, what was that? Those were my ears burning. Bloody Disgusting and The Collective heard my plead for more horror films and they obliged me. Awesome! Phase 7 is an Argentinian film that can best be described like this, for lack of a better term(s) – it’s Shaun of the Dead meets REC meets John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13. It’s also executive produced by the same cats that produced Paranormal Activity, so that’s cool too. How will Phase 7 or Fase 7, as it’s called in Spanish, compare to those films that I previously mentioned? Let’s take a trip to Argentina and find out!  Continue reading ‘Phase 7 (DVD Review)’

Atrocious (DVD Review)

It’s always a good day when the powers that be drop a huge basket of horror material for review. It’s especially a good day when some of the titles are in Spanish. Atrocious happens to be one of these films. It is written and directed by Fernando Barreda Luna and was shot in Spain with Spanish actors in eleven days. Before going on I will preface this review and say that Atrocious is another “reality-hand-held” type of film. If you’re okay with this then keep going, but if you’re not, then by all means…suck it up and keep going. C’mon!   Continue reading ‘Atrocious (DVD Review)’

Captain America: The First Avenger (Blu-ray Review)

Okay, so here we are at last with the final film in the establishing saga of what will bring us an Avengers film next year.  Here is Captain America: The First Avenger. It’s been what, at least half a dozen individual super heroes, give or take, right? We just had Thor, Iron Man & Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, and so forth. I guess it was time to give Captain America his due since he will be the leader of The Avengers; it makes sense. Now the big question is, will Captain America: The First Avenger makes sense of itself? It’s a tall order, but let’s see what we can see as Why So Blu? takes a stab at Captain America: The First Avenger on Blu-ray!  Continue reading ‘Captain America: The First Avenger (Blu-ray Review)’

Le Quattro Volte (Blu-ray Review)

Le Quattro Volte (The Four Times) is a peculiar little film from the folks over at Kino Lorber. I was initially a little skeptical about taking the job of reviewing it, because when it was initially described to me by another reviewer, it didn’t quite do anything for me. Then I decided to do a little bit of research and five minutes later I was ready to do it! Yes, the film is a foreign one, Italian, but considering it takes place in the Italian countryside, I knew it would look damn good.  How was the film and Blu-ray, you ask? Let me tell you…  Continue reading ‘Le Quattro Volte (Blu-ray Review)’

Lit – 2011 Electronic Press Kit

The boys from that little rock ‘n roll outfit known as Lit have released what could be called a video journal that chronicles the last 10-15 years of their career and compresses it into a very cool little electronic press kit which has the band talking about their forthcoming album.  They’re still in the studio recording the tunes, but this electronic press kit features some very candid interviews with A.Jay Popoff (Vocals); Jeremy Popoff (Lead Guitar), and Kevin Baldes (Bass).  The newest addition to the Lit family are Nathan Walker (Drums) and Ryan Gillmor (Rhythm Guitar & Keyboards).  The band talks about everything from past tragedies, to new hopes for the future, and getting back into the studio to record an album since their last release (self titled) back in 2004.  It’s been a long time coming, so stick around and enjoy LIT on Why So Blu?!  Continue reading ‘Lit – 2011 Electronic Press Kit’
