It isn’t every day you go into a sci-fi flick expecting a space-survival thriller and walk out with your heart completely full, but that’s exactly the magic of Project Hail Mary. As one of the absolute most pleasant cinema surprises of the year so far, this 2026 gem directed by the visionary duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller is a total blast. Adapted by Drew Goddard from Andy Weir’s celebrated sci-fi novel, the film takes a high-stakes, apocalyptic premise and turns it into something delightfully down-to-earth. It manages to be charming, effective, sweet, and, unexpectedly, laugh-out-loud funny.

Waking Up Is Hard to Do

Imagine waking up millions of miles from home with a raging headache and absolutely no idea who you are or how you got there. That’s the daunting reality for our protagonist, Ryland Grace (played to perfection by Ryan Gosling). Through a series of cleverly placed flashback sequences, Grace slowly pieces his memory back together: he’s a former middle school science teacher, and he’s on a desperate mission to save Earth. Our world is facing an existential threat from the gradual loss of light from the sun over time, and the Hail Mary spacecraft is humanity’s big swing to find a solution. But just as Grace is coming to terms with his situation, he discovers another interstellar spacecraft out in the void, carrying another lone passenger who is just as lost as he is.

Putting the “Science” Back in Sci-Fi

If you love it when a movie respects your intelligence, you are in for a treat. There is a hefty amount of scientific exposition packed into the film to explain Grace’s world-saving mission, but it never feels like a dry lecture. The filmmakers went to great lengths to treat the subject matter with genuine authenticity, enlisting help from NASA to ensure the astrophysics and problem-solving felt completely real. This dedication to accuracy grounds the massive stakes, making every single scientific breakthrough on the ship feel like a thrilling, fist-pumping victory.

The Heroes Back Home

While Grace is navigating the cosmos, the movie’s Earth-bound flashbacks are just as captivating thanks to a stellar supporting ensemble. Sandra Hüller is an absolute force as Eva Stratt, the fiercely pragmatic head of the international task force behind the Hail Mary mission. She’s the boss calling the shots with zero time for nonsense, and Hüller plays her with brilliant, commanding intensity. Adding some fantastic grounded energy to the Earth scenes is Lionel Boyce as Carl, a key member of the security personnel. Boyce brings a memorable presence to the role, balancing out the high-stakes science with some much-needed, relatable humanity. To round things out in tidy fashion, the film gets fantastic work from Ken Leung as the original Hail Mary commander Yao Li-Jie, and Milana Vayntrub as the chief engineer Olesya Ilyukhina.We also can’t forget Priya Kansara, who perfectly voices “Mary,” the ship’s onboard computer that acts as a vital line of communication.

As a cinematic experience, Project Hail Mary soars thanks to the brilliant screenplay by Drew Goddard. Based on the beloved novel by Andy Weir—who also penned the sci-fi masterpiece The Martian, which famously became an excellent film in its own right—this adaptation had big space-boots to fill. Fans of the source material can breathe a massive sigh of relief: the movie is incredibly faithful to the book! While a 400-page novel naturally contains a bit more granular math and deep-dive physics than a two-hour movie can hold, Goddard masterfully streamlines the heavy calculations without ever dumbing down the science. The core puzzle-solving spirit, the relentless optimism, and the beautiful, life-saving friendship between Grace and Rocky are all translated perfectly to the screen. It captures the exact same thrilling, brainy magic that made The Martian such a hit, proving that Weir’s stories are custom-built for cinema.

A Buddy Comedy Among the Stars

The true beating heart of the movie, however, is the dynamic between Grace and his new extraterrestrial friend, Rocky. When Grace realizes this other passenger is an entirely unknown species, the two embark on a clumsy, fascinating, and deeply moving journey to communicate until they somehow end up becoming genuine friends. Anchored by Gosling’s trademark blend of earnest vulnerability and perfect comedic timing, the relationship is elevated to the stratosphere by some truly spectacular puppeteer and VoiceOver work from James Ortiz as Rocky. Watching these two very different beings bridge the gap to save their respective worlds is absolute movie magic.

The spaceship interiors of both spacecraft are absolutely rife with detail, looking incredibly spacious and rich on my system. Textures are fully realized, bringing a stunning amount of life to the look of the film as a whole. From the complex control panels of the Hail Mary to the tactile surfaces of the alien vessel, every fine detail is resolved beautifully.

Depth:

The shifting aspect ratios work wonders here, creating a fully realized sense of depth. The vastness of space feels appropriately endless, while the ship interiors pull you right into the action, giving the whole presentation a wonderfully immersive, three-dimensional pop on a 4K display.

Black Levels:

As you’d hope for a movie set millions of miles from Earth, the black levels are deep, inky, and stable. The vacuum of space provides a perfect, absolute dark backdrop without ever crushing the finer shadow details tucked away in the dimmer corridors of the ship.

Color:

This is where the Dolby Vision presentation truly shines! The film’s color palette is extraordinary, especially when we get our first breathtaking looks at the planet Tau Ceti e (or as it’s affectionately called, Adrian). The atmospheric hues pop vividly, contrasting beautifully with the gorgeous, deep red of the space suits.

Flesh Tones:

Facial features are fully realized and flawlessly natural. The skin tones remain perfectly balanced and warm, holding up brilliantly whether under the bright, clinical lights of the ship’s lab or during the moodier, shadow-heavy sequences.

Noise and Artifacts:

The encode boasts a gorgeous, clean film grade. It manages to look authentically filmic without any excess grain—in fact, no heavy grain was detected at all. Free of banding or compression artifacts, it’s a pristine image from start to finish!

Height channel activity is cleverly reserved mostly for the detailed interiors of the spaceships in the film. You’ll catch a few perfectly placed object sounds from above that add a great sense of vertical space, putting you right into the world of Grace and Rocky without ever overdoing the effect.

Low Frequency Extension:

The subwoofer doesn’t get a continuous workout, but the bass response hits wonderfully heavy for a few key sequences to give the action real weight. It kicks in exactly when it needs to—providing a deeply satisfying rumble—but it too isn’t bombastic.

Surround Sound Presentation:

Subtlety is absolutely the name of the sound game here! The surround channels are used to brilliant effect, relying on echo and ambient background effects to gently wrap you into the environment. Instead of a constant barrage of noise, the careful mix makes you feel like a third passenger on the journey.

Dialogue:

As the true anchor of the movie, dialogue is rendered flawlessly. Every piece of crucial scientific exposition and every charming interaction between Grace and his new friend comes through crystal clear and perfectly prioritized!

While the 4K UHD Blu-ray presentation is absolutely stunning, the bonus features included on the disc are a bit modest but still offer some fantastic insights into the making of the film. For fans who wanted to spend even more time in the Hail Mary, there is plenty to enjoy here!

• Audio Commentary by Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller:The visionary directing duo provides a highly entertaining and informative track.
