FAQs
What is Why So Blu?
I think you can find all the answers you are looking for on our About page.
What’s with the dog?
Hey! That dog has a name. His name is Dexter. Special thanks to Sandy Murray and her family for allowing us to use and market their dog’s image. The interesting thing about Dexter is that when you take a picture of him, with the camera’s flash, it turn his iris in his eyes blue. When I first saw a picture of Dexter with these blue eyes I immediately coined the phrase Blu-ray eyes. Using him as our mascot just made sense for many reasons. So get used to him. Dex is here to stay!
Why do we promote Blu-ray over the DVD format?
That’s like asking why we would rather have a steak over a grilled cheese sandwich. For all the reasons and more that Blu-ray is better than DVD please see below.
Some of the below information has been taken from statistics posted by the official Blu-ray Disc Association.
Picture Quality?
In the digital world, picture quality dependes on bit rates. For example, DVDs can deliver 8 megabits per second (Mbps). HDTV broadcasts can reach 10 Mbps. Blu-ray Disc can reach up to 48 Mbps! Blu-ray Disc also provides full 1080P resolution to increase your viewing enjoyment.
Audio Quality?
With up to 7.1 channels of high definition surround sound and option for up to 32 streams of audio, Blu-ray Disc is an amazing experience for your ears.
Storage Capacity ?
Blu-ray Disc offers the highest capacity on the market without compromising quality. The blue laser technology enables up to 50 GB of storage, or 5 times the capacity of today’s DVDs.
Interactivity?
With integrated games, stunning high definition bonus features and a Blu-ray Disc player equipped with BD Live for Internet connectivity, you’ve got the best of both live and packaged content. You are able to enhance your movie with live updates or live events built around your Blu-ray Disc content. Blu-ray Disc allows for easy navigation through the film with convenient pop-up menus.
Blu-ray Products?
Blu-ray Disc had a broader industry support at launch than any disc format ever introduced. It enjoys the entusiastic support of major companies in electronics, computers, videogames, recording media, music and movies. Blu-ray disc playback can be achieved on a wide range of Blu-ray Disc playback products, such as any manufactured Blu-ray standalone player, Sony Playstation 3 game console, and Blu-ray Disc optical PC drives.
Will your DVDs work?
We do have to sarcastically ask…why would you want them to? OK…seriously now…The Blu-ray Disc system uses the standard 12cm and 8cm disc sizes to support backward compatibility with your existing DVDs and CDs. That means you don’t have to throw away your current collections and they can still be enjoyed on every Blu-ray Disc player, Playstation 3, and Blu-ray Disc PC drives.
Advanced Durability?
Blu-ray discs are coated with a special Anti-Scratch layer that can take the most harsh acts of punishment and keep on playing. If you do not believe us, check out some of the videos on you Tube, and see the punishment people inflict on their Blu-ray Discs to only watch them still amazingly play. There is no more skipping like the headaches that a scratch DVD makes for us.
