Sofia Coppola Q&A At The Aero Theater

On June 5^th, 2013, I was happy to attend a double feature of films by Sofia Coppola at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica.  Of her films, the features played were Lost In Translation and The Virgin Suicides.  In between features, Coppola showed up to participate in a Q&A, where she was open to answering all sorts of questions regarding her films, her directorial style, and approach to different features.  I was able to record this conversation and am pleased to be able to present it in its entirety in this post.  Continue on to listen to the entire Q&A and learn more about this fun event.

With five very diverse features to her credit, Sofia Coppola is among the most fascinating filmmakers working today. The daughter of legendary director Francis Ford Coppola, she got an early start in the movies as an actress, but soon gravitated to the other side of the camera. As a writer-producer-director, Sofia Coppola has explored such themes as youth, glamour and loneliness with both sensitivity and visual flair.

The remarkably assured THE VIRGIN SUICIDES demonstrated Coppola’s rapport with both veteran and younger performers, a skill put to even more impressive use in LOST IN TRANSLATION, for which she became the first American woman nominated for a Best Director Academy Award. The director reteamed with star Kirsten Dunst for the dazzling MARIE ANTOINETTE (2006), a film energized by Coppola’s love of fashion, Paris and alternative rock, while SOMEWHERE (2010) casts a knowing eye on the high life of Hollywood. Based on actual events, the upcoming THE BLING RING follows a group of young burglars (including Emma Watson) who target the rich and famous.

Two Americans cross paths one night in a luxury hotel bar in Tokyo. Bob (Bill Murray, never better) is a movie star shooting a whiskey commercial, while Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) is a young woman tagging along with her workaholic photographer husband (Giovanni Ribisi). This chance meeting soon becomes a surprising friendship. A box office hit, LOST IN TRANSLATION was nominated for four Oscars, earning one for director Sofia Coppola’s Best Original Screenplay.

THE VIRGIN SUICIDES
1999, Paramount, 97 min, USA, Dir: Sofia Coppola
For her feature directorial debut, Sofia Coppola adapted the Jeffrey Eugenides novel of adolescent repression and rebellion in an upper-class Detroit suburb in the 1970s. A group of local boys are mesmerized by the mysterious Lisbon sisters, who are kept on a short leash by overprotective parents James Woods and Kathleen Turner. When one of the girls (Kirsten Dunst) strikes up a relationship with one of the guys (Josh Hartnett), it sets in motion a chain of events that ends in tragedy.

Coppola’s next film is The Bling Ring, featuring Emma Watson, among others.  Inspired by actual events, a group of fame-obsessed teenagers use the internet to track celebrities’ whereabouts in order to rob their homes.  The Bling Ring will be out in limited release on June 14^th, 2013, and spreads wider in weeks to come.
