Comic Con 2012: The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead has become a very big deal at Comic Con over the last couple of years.  While the comic has been very successful, which is great for the readers and all involved, such as creator Robert Kirkman, the TV series has become a runaway success, consistently breaking ratings records for cable series.  It is a huge win for AMC to have it air on their network and naturally, thousands of fans at Comic Con were excited to see whatever was in store for them at The Walking Dead Panel.  Unfortunately, this panel was so incredibly packed that I was not able to make it in, but the brand new Season 3 trailer did make its debut.  Continue on to see the new trailer and other glimpses of the upcoming and very anticipated season.

Again, I was not able to make it into this panel, which was unfortunate, as I am a massive fan of the comic book series and I am really looking forward to this upcoming season, hoping that it continues to deliver more on the series’ potential.  Anyway, check out the trailer below, before I add some more of my own thoughts on it.

With the trailer in mind, my main take away is that the show is continuing to deal with very dark material and remain a very bleak series overall.  That is certainly true to the spirit of the book, especially in the sense that dealing with zombies is not necessarily needed for every episode, as long as we watch these characters deal with the various situations they find themselves in, based on the new world status.  What has been in an issue in the past is in regards to how the characters come off, which I basically see as unlikable for the most part.  While The Walking Dead delivers very well in regards to zombie action and other technical marks, the writing has not always come off as a great asset to the series, which I hope will change, given the presence of show runner Glenn Mazzara, who took over halfway through last season, which helped in propelling the momentum of the season and delivering some of the better episodes.

Based on the trailer, we see the arrival of two very important characters from the comics.  One is Michonne (Danai Gurira), a very strong female character who comes with a katana and armless zombies in tow.  The other important character is the Mayor (David Morrissey), who has been regarded as one of the all time best comic book villains.  Both of these characters should and need to make a serious impact on the series, were it to really want to please fans of the comic and those who really want to see some cool and interesting stuff in the series.  While I wont get into spoilers, I can tell already that there are many changes made to how these characters are factoring into the upcoming season, so I will be interested to see how it all plays out.  One last thing to note is the return of Merle (Michael Rooker), who has been MIA for quite some time now.

Season 3 of The Walking Dead beings on October 14, 2012 and it will feature 16 episodes.
