Plane

Film

Plane is exactly the kind of meat-and-potatoes action flick you expect when Gerard Butler is in the cockpit — literally. The film doesn’t try to reinvent the genre, and honestly, that’s part of its charm. It’s fast, functional, and gets right to the point: a commercial airliner makes an emergency landing in hostile territory, and it’s up to the pilot and a mysterious fugitive to keep the passengers alive.

Butler plays Brodie Torrance, a commercial pilot with a no-nonsense vibe and just enough edge to feel believable when things go sideways. He’s not invincible, which makes him a lot more relatable than your usual action hero. Next to him is Louis Gaspare, played by Mike Colter, a prisoner being extradited who becomes the most reliable guy to have in a crisis. Colter brings quiet menace with a touch of sympathy, and honestly, he’s probably the most interesting part of the movie.

Once the plane goes down, the movie shifts gears into a survival-action hybrid, dropping the cast into a jungle filled with mercenaries, rebels, and plenty of reasons to keep moving. There’s a gritty, old-school feel to it all — gunfights are loud and chaotic, punches feel heavy, and there’s no glossy sheen to the violence. It’s rough, sweaty, and grounded, which is refreshing in a time when most action movies lean into slick CGI.

What makes Plane work is its simplicity. There’s no massive conspiracy or convoluted backstory. It’s just a bad situation and people trying to get out alive. That focus keeps the tension high and the pacing tight. You’re not here for big emotional arcs or philosophical themes –you’re here to see Big-G crack skulls, lead under pressure, and maybe land a few sarcastic one-liners while he’s at it.

The direction by Jean-François Richet (Mesrine: Public Enemy #1/Public Enemy: Killer Instinct) is solid, with a stripped-down visual style that serves the story well. The movie knows its limits and doesn’t pretend to be anything more than a straightforward survival thriller. It’s not a game-changer, but it’s entertaining, gritty, and perfect for a night where you just want to see some people fight back against the odds.
