‘The Way, Way Back’ Cast & Crew Interviews: Steve Carell And Allison Janney
The Way Way Back is the coming of age story of 14-year-old Duncan’s (Liam James) summer vacation with his mother, Pam (Toni Collette), her overbearing boyfriend, Trent (Steve Carell), and his daughter, Steph (Zoe Levin). Having a rough time fitting in, the introverted Duncan finds an unexpected friend in Owen (Sam Rockwell), the gregarious manager of the Water Wizz Water Park. Through his funny, clandestine friendship with Owen, Duncan slowly opens up to and begins to finally find his place in the world – all during a summer he will never forget. This film is the directorial debut for Academy Award winners Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (The Descendants) and this is one of four posts where you will hear what the cast and crew had to say about being a part of the film.
This interview features Steve Carell and Allison Janney. Carell plays Trent, the overbearing boyfriend of Duncan’s mother. Allison Janney plays Betty, the loquacious and lively next door neighbor. The two discuss various aspects about the film, including Carell playing against type, having fun on set, what elements and motivations were brought to both characters from the actors, and what excited them about being a part of this film.
The following clip is a recording of this interview, which was done in a roundtable style, featuring Carell, Janney, myself, and a few other film journalists. I will note that there may be a few spoiler-ish elements discussed about the film, along with some language for those who may be concerned on that level. Regardless, please enjoy the clip, as I had fun participating in the conversation!
