OUTATIME Blu-ray Day Part 1 – Restored DeLorean Photo Tour

For all Back to the Future fans big or small, the famed DeLorean DMC-12 is by far one of the most recognized movie vehicles worldwide.  As the machine of choice for Doc Brown’s famed time machine, the DeLorean with its stainless steel body and futuristic gull-wing doors has been a symbol of fantasy and science fiction come to life.  A new documentary chronicling the restoration of the original A-car (one of three used the most in the original film) after years of being on display outside at Universal Studios called OUTATIME: Saving the DeLorean Time Machine is coming to Blu-ray (with tons of extras courtesy of Virgil Films!), DVD and VOD on July 19 and it gives fans a front row seat to the amazing reconstruction of one of the most beloved cars of all time.

 

I got a rare opportunity recently to not only chat with some of the folks involved with the doc – Director/Producer Steve Concotelli and Head of Restoration Joe Walser – but also to head down to the famed Peterson Automotive Museum to get an up close and personal tour of the Back to the Future DeLorean itself with both guys there in-person and it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.  So in Part One of our OUTATIME Blu-ray Day coverage its a photo tour of what went down during our visit, plus there’s a TON more in a photo gallery below for the fan who demands DeLorean detail.  AND as a bonus scroll down for some special interview info – the tour starts here!

 

 

We had to get the skinny of how the famed DeLorean ended up at the amazing Peterson Automotive Museum and it’s importance to the iconic auto palace, so we sought out the man himself for a few answers – here’s Peterson Automotive Museum Chief Marketing Officer…

ADAM LANGSBARD

Can you talk a bit about the importance of having the original A-car from Back to the Future now fully restored safely in the museum and what it means to you guys?

Adam Langsbard: I think that you’d be hard pressed to find anybody who wouldn’t say that the Back to the Future DeLorean is not one of the top five movie cars of all time.  You got the Risky Business car, you got the Ghostbusters car and then the list starts to get shorter and shorter as you branch out from there.  Given the incredible longevity that property has had, that’s extremely valuable for us to be able to articulate that kind of intellectual property within the confines of the museum.  So at the end the end of the day having a piece of automotive/movie history on that level here in our building is a huge win for us.

How did the car end up at the museum and how cool is it that it’s the actual car?

AL: We don’t do replicas.  (Smiles)  If you read the fine print somewhere on the bottom of the Peterson website…just kidding!  Really a movie car here has to be THE movie car.  It was actually a mission of mine when I took this job about three years ago to find all of these cars.  I had the Ghostbusters car in here for a while and I found the owner of the Risky Business car and it’s been a little troublesome trying to pry it out of his hands even for a loan.  But I called Universal about three years ago and told them we were redoing the museum and they said they’d love to help, but the car was being fully restored and it was going into a class case and was going to be part of the tour so that was the end of that.  Cut to about two and half years later someone who works for me stumbled across it in storage.  So I picked up the phone and it didn’t take a whole lot of convincing – we’ve been called the greatest automotive museum in the world.  The bar is set high and we believed that this was the best possible place to honor the movie and that car.

Is it here for a while – how long do fans have to come and see it?

AL: The way it’s phrased plain and simple is it’s on permanent load to the museum.  It will always be up in our Hollywood gallery unless Universal just suddenly decides one day that they want it back.  So again it’s in our Hollywood gallery and it’s flanked by cars from Little Miss Sunshine to Entourage to Magnum P.I. and Batman and a whole host of cars.  And while a lot of those cars will probably change in and out a little bit, as long as I’m here the Back to the Future car stays.  It goes nowhere!  It’s just a general admission ticket to see and it’s up there for everyone to enjoy.  And yes, all the lights are on and the doors are open for you to peer inside!
