Transformers Comics Get Reboot
For years, Transformers and G.I. Joe comics were published under Marvel, which then changed hands and went to IDW. However, at the end of last year, IDW’s grip on the licensing for both IP’s was lost. As the old adage goes, one man’s loss is another man’s gain, and such is the case in comic book publishers as well when Image swooped in to snag the rights. Both series recently made their debut with Transformers coming in a little earlier. What’s the verdict?
While I haven’t gotten a hold of that first G.I. Joe issue yet, I did manage to get my hands on a second printing of Transformers #1. Daniel Warren Johnson, known for his work on The Jurassic League and Wonder Woman, is the writer to kick things off with this series under Image as both writer and artist. Johnson provides a gritty look on the pages of this debut and it is so befitting of a group of wrecked robots who have seen better days.
As for his writing, Johnson provides twists and turns that were largely unexpected. Predictability is not something you’ll find here in what is an exciting and adrenaline-laced premier that serves the Transformers franchise quite well. We’re already up to issue #3 in the series and a crossover between the Autobots and G.I. Joe is an absolute certainty, so get your hands on the start of the series now so you don’t miss a beat. Autobots, roll out!
