Loki: The Complete Second Season (4K UHD Blu-ray Steelbook Review)

Loki began as a deliciously catty villain.  A great foil for his brother Thor, Loki made for an interesting character in his own right.  As we learned in the first season, Loki actually had more depth than we had imagined.  The second season seemed to match the efforts of the original, adding so much more value to the character and fleshing him out as another someone you could feel for in the MCU.  Read more about Loki: The Complete Second Season below and keep watch so you don’t fall into a time-slip!!

Season:

Loki: The Complete Second Season picks up in the aftermath of the shocking season one finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority. Along with Mobius, Hunter B-15 and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.

Loki: The Complete Second Season dives deeper into the chaos of the multiverse, delivering an intricate blend of character-driven storytelling and high-concept sci-fi that rivals its stellar first season. Picking up where Season 1 left off—with the fracturing of the Sacred Timeline and the shocking revelation of He Who Remains’ death—Season 2 raises the stakes as Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Mobius (Owen Wilson) navigate the aftermath.

Season 2 wastes no time immersing viewers in the fallout of the multiversal collapse. The introduction of “time-slipping,” a phenomenon uniquely afflicting Loki, adds urgency to the narrative. While some episodes are slower as they delve into exposition and character building, others, especially the mid-season and finale, are breakneck and packed with jaw-dropping twists. The story masterfully balances humor, suspense, and emotional depth, keeping fans on edge.

Tom Hiddleston shines as Loki, showcasing a remarkable range from vulnerability to the cunning mischief we love. His evolving relationship with Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) takes center stage, exploring themes of free will and trust. Owen Wilson’s Mobius adds heart and levity, while new additions, particularly Ke Huy Quan as OB, a quirky yet vital TVA technician, are standout. Jonathan Majors delivers a chilling performance as Victor Timely, offering a fresh perspective on the Kang variant, though his role has sparked some off-screen controversies.

The visuals in Season 2 are breathtaking, with dazzling depictions of crumbling timelines and cosmic anomalies. The retro-futuristic design of the TVA continues to be a visual treat, juxtaposing analog tech with high-stakes sci-fi. The expanded exploration of the TVA’s structure and purpose deepens the lore, making the show feel like a cornerstone of Marvel’s multiverse saga.

Season 2 grapples with complex philosophical themes—identity, purpose, and the consequences of choice. Loki’s transformation into a reluctant hero feels authentic, with moments of genuine growth that reflect his MCU journey. The finale is particularly poignant, leaving fans contemplating its implications for the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Loki: The Complete 2nd Season cements its place as one of Marvel’s most ambitious and compelling series. While not every subplot lands perfectly, the show’s rich character work, thrilling twists, and strong performances make it an unmissable installment in the MCU. With its emotionally resonant ending, Season 2 sets a high bar for future Marvel projects and leaves fans eagerly anticipating Loki’s next chapter—or perhaps his final bow.

Video:

Encoding: HEVC / H.265

Resolution: 4K (2160p)

Aspect Ratio: 2.20:1

Layers: BD-100 (3 Episodes per disc)

HDR: Dolby Vision

Clarity/Detail: Loki: The Complete Second Season comes to 4K UHD Blu-ray with a triple-layered 4K disc that boosts the clarity of the digital stream and makes the show sparkle! Even the Dolby Vision is better on disc. Set pieces in the TVA and outdoors in any realm are handled lovingly and the stability of the image on disc is much more stable.

Depth: There is a “vintage” feel to the filming of Loki that no doubt gives to its time hopping premise.  Blur and judder and other issues do not plague this 4K release, and overall, lensing is lovingly handled throughout season 2!

Black Levels: Inky blacks look perfect throughout the episodes. Of note is the difference in comparing the streaming version to the disc, as blacks turn dark scenes into moments of talking or fighting blobs.

Color Reproduction: Colors are varied and discrete. Some primaries pop better than others, but altogether, the colors work to create a visual feast for viewers.

Flesh Tones: Skin tones look just as expected, natural as can be.

Noise/Artifacts: Clean.

Audio:

Audio Format(s): English Dolby Atmos, English Descriptive Audio 2.0 Dolby Digital, Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital, French 5.1 Dolby Digital

Subtitles:  English SDH, Spanish, French

Dynamics: Disney+ series are available with Dolby Atmos, but those mixes always feel hobbled and not up to snuff.  Toggling between my 4K set and the Disney+ stream, I noticed better surround activity and bass response and an overall better listening experience on disc.  Compression will never be a good thing for video and audio quality and this mix is proof of that.

Height: From above, time slips, weapon clatter, explosions and other high-end sounds clatter on top of the listener.

Low-Frequency Extension: Music, fight scenes, explosive moments and more give deep bass moments throughout the season.

Surround Sound Presentation: Lower surrounds keep you in the series with ambience, crowd noise, office din and of course the ever-present superhero battles.

Dialogue Reproduction: Dialogue is reproduced perfectly.

Extras:

Summary:

Loki: The Complete Second Season is not as surprising as the first.  That does not translate into disappointment for this viewer.  The new Disney+ 4K UHD Blu-ray Steelbook is nothing to scoff at, looking and sounding much better than the digital stream.  Fans of the show should know this is a must-buy and perfect for gift giving this year for the Marvel fan in your family… or if you’re like me, for the Marvel fan that is myself! Extras are fine, and as with the other releases this wave, the artwork is fantastic! Loki: The Complete Second Season is most definitely worth a pick-up!
