A Minecraft Movie (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)
A Minecraft Movie relishes so gleefully in its absurd comedic chaos that I found myself absorbed completely. To say it’s stupid goes without saying. In fact, you’ve no doubt already made up your mind whether you’re going to watch this or not. Director Jared Hess and screenwriters Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer previously collaborated on 2015’s Masterminds and the Napoleon Dynamite TV series. While I didn’t see either of those, I can’t imagine they’re too far off in their comedic sensibilities from A Minecraft Movie.
Film:

The plot is simple: A group of misfits find themselves pulled into the world of Minecraft. You see, years earlier, Steve (Jack Black) landed himself in this world and hid the cube-shaped key back in our world. In this world, everything is cube-shaped, and if it doesn’t make sense to you, don’t worry: one of the characters will say that for you. It’s basically the film’s way of telling you to chill out and just enjoy the experience.
There’s a villain, a pig lord Malgosha (voiced by Rachel House) who is plotting to imprison the cube creatures of the Overworld. Why not.
Some of the best moments are held in the first 30 minutes, where it’s introducing all the characters at rapid fire speed. Jason Momoa is Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, whose day in the sun as a video game champion was left in the 80’s. There are two orphaned teenagers: Natalie (Emma Myers) and Henry (Sebastian Hansen), and a real estate agent Dawn (Danielle Brooks) to round out these new residents of Minecraft. Just for fun is Jennifer Coolidge as a horny divorced principal who has an unfortunate habit of hitting people with her Jeep, including a escapee cube man from this world of Minecraft.
It’s the enthusiastic combination of the cast and crew that makes this film work better than it should. Everyone seems to have shown up to work in love with the nonsense they’re being hired to produce. I’m borderline embarrassed to admit how much I laughed throughout the runtime. I did, quite a bit. How can one truly hate a film where Jennifer Coolidge so aggressively courts a cube-faced monstrosity?
Video:

Encoding: HEVC / H.265
Resolution: 4K (2160p)
HDR: Dolby Vision
Aspect Ratio: 1.85:1
Clarity/Detail: I viewed A Minecraft Movie on Sony’s Class BRAVIA 9 TV with Pansonic’s DP-UB9000P1K player. This film is vibrant, with every detail of the world visible, from the leaves on the trees, to the scars on the pigs, to the eyeliner on Momoa. This is a complete blast to behold on the UHD format, and one I’d use to demo the capability of the format.
Depth: There are several long shots throughout where I paused it to just look around at the CG landscape. Action and movements are smooth.
Black Levels: Levels are clear and deep. This Dolby Vision presentation is doing some outstanding work here.
Color Reproduction: Is this the most colorful 4K presentation so far this year? Either way, this thing POPS. It’s bright, with every small detail clear as a Minecraft day.
Flesh Tones: The flesh tones of some of the pigs are borderline repulsive. Every gross detail is unfortunately visible.
Noise/Artifacts: Clean
Audio:

Audio Format(s): English Dolby Atmos, English Dolby TrueHD 7.1, English Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1
Subtitles: English SDH, French, Spanish
Dynamics: There is so much happening on this presentation that it might be one of my favorite Atmos presentations so far of 2025. There was a lot of care put into how this film sounds. You can hear squeals and pig yells from the furthest distance of the screen. You hear in great detail every block being built. Every chicken jokey cackle.
Height: My Atmos speakers got a lot of play with this presentations. Between creatures flying, catapults, and purple sky beams, I heard every detail above my head.
Low Frequency Extension: Just refer to minute 21 when Henry’s rocket goes crashing to experience the bouncing subwoofer. Every action scene with any sort of explosion causes the room to rumble.
Surround Sound Presentation: The chicken jockey moment startled me momentarily because the gremlin sounding cackle moved unexpectedly to the speaker right behind me. The surround sound does an incredible job immersing you in every scene. Moments where the cube key awakens uses every single one of my nine speakers. You’ll hear those evil pigs in every corner of your room.
Dialogue Reproduction: Dialogue is clear amidst the chaos of A Minecraft Movie.

Summary:

There’s a gag involving Malgosha and a knife towards the end that’s worth all these stars alone. When the inevitable sequel is produced, I’ll happily go see it in theatres. I’m just as shocked as you.
