Boss Baby was a surprise that popped up at the end of the Trolls panel. It only lasted for about 30mins, but the opportunity to see footage of a talking baby voiced by Alec Baldwin was well worth the wait. Boss Baby is the story of a family who’s new addition to the family turns out to be a high-powered business man in the form of a baby. His mission and goal is to oust his older brother from his position as the favorite son.

I’ll be honest, after watching the first clip from this panel it did NOT have me pumped for the release of this film. The whole thing comes off as a combination of Roger Rabbit and Baby’s Day Out. It just seems like something that would’ve been better received if it had come out in the early 90’s. Talking babies is a concept that has been presented to the world in a million different iterations. Based on what I saw, it doesn’t seem like Boss Baby will be bringing anything new to the table. Not to mention they choose a very “hyper realistic” animation style as director Tom McGrath mentions. Which is kinda neat at first, but after a while watching characters with eyes that take up HALF of their face tends to get old fast. I’m not saying that every animated film should have characters with photo realistic appearances. But unless you’re coming out with something on the level of say a Looney Tunes, then I wouldn’t attempt to recreate such an iconic visual style.

Despite all this, Baldwin is hilarious in his infant role! This might just be one of those movies that will rest squarely on the shoulders of it’s stars. Unlike Trolls, which will appeal to both young AND old, Boss Baby is definitely geared to a much younger audience. I’m not sure that anyone over the age of 13 would be able to get into a movie like this. However, it does seem to have a few clever comparisons to the life of a Baby and a Businessman. And with a cast that also includes Steve Buscemi, Lisa Kudrow, and Patton Oswalt it’s safe to say that this will at least serve as a fun time for the kids that won’t totally bore the parents to tears.
