Slam Bolt Scrappers (PSN Game Review)
I have owned a PlayStation 3 for a little over a year now and this has been my first experience with a game from the PlayStation Store. As you all probably know, some games are heavily advertised on the home pages of Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network and thus give an excellent insight into how the game will be. Unfortunately, Slam Bolt Scrappers was not one of these heavily advertised titles and therefore I was a bit skeptical, but nonetheless, thanks to our kind PR person at SOE, I was up for the challenge.
Once I started playing the game I said, “Wow, this is a change of pace.” In a world where the market is heavily saturated with shooters it was nice to try out something that took a little bit of skill and brains to complete. This game is a combination of various tower defense games, Tetris and Rampage: World Tour. Small flying creatures rain down from the sky and attempt to attack your already established defense towers and the only way to stop them is to fly towards them with one of six playable characters and punch them until they are defeated and ultimately turn into Tetris pieces. The object of the pieces is to make a square with the same color pieces in order to create more towers or to increase the size of an existing tower.
The object of the game is to eliminate your opponents’ towers before they eliminate yours. The bigger your tower, the stronger its weapons are and the harder it is to destroy. I will tell you that if I was ten years old and just starting out, this would definitely be an excellent game. However, given the fact I am much older and more skilled than a noob, this game was not that challenging. I was able to breeze through the game in less than an hour. Also, I am a gamer that gets very involved in the story of the game, and this one unfortunately does not have one.
Again, if you are a young and new gamer, than I would say that this is a great game to hone your hand-eye coordination and puzzle solving skills. For the more advanced and hardcore gamers I would say save your money for something more challenging.
I tried this one yesterday. I was not impressed as it became rather tedious in a hurry. The bright, colorful graphics couldn’t save the day.
If this is your first PSN game, you have to get on board with all of the other fantastic games the online store has to offer – right now – Pixel Junk Shooter 1 & 2
