Veep: The Complete Series (Blu-ray Review)

Veep began as a charming comedy series about the ins and outs of being the Vice President of the US. Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Selina Meyer turned out to be a lot more than just a foil for the President and her journey lasted 7 years, and all the way to the best seat in the Oval Office.  Now, just in time for an election year, we get Veep: The Complete Series, collected on Blu-ray together for the first time! Series

My Take:

Watching Selina Meyer bumble through her day-to-day issues is something verging on pure joy.  The series follows the many misadventures one must endure while the president is away. Selina often asks, “Did the president call?” to which she always gets a resounding “no.”  As she goes through each event blindly, be it campaigning for clean jobs or running for president after her unseen mentor decides not to run, we know things won’t be easy for Selina, and yet we soldier on with her, laughing along the way.

Whether Selina is catching the office tummy bug, getting caught having a relationship she shouldn’t be having, or going back and forth with her tireless assistant Gary, there is always a laugh around every corner.  The snarky Amy Brookheimer and the sharp Dan Egan also keep Selina on her toes as they trade barbs with her and each other.

Casting for Veep is on point.  The actors can carry you through each moment, even when it feels as if you’re getting lost in political points. The real treat is seeing Selina Meyer, a normal human being. She bumbles, she has awkward interactions and many a faux pas. She’s a shaky politician, but you find yourself rooting for her anyway.  Selina has highs and lows, and her mistakes are more humanizing to the audience watching her.  And with that humanizing portrayal, Dreyfus had us all in her corner.  Her 4 Emmy wins are warranted as she pours herself into the role. And without creator Armando Iannucci, the show would not gel as beautifully as it does.

If you’ve never seen Veep this is a perfect way to get into the show.  The political humor is down to earth and sharp.  The moments of more screwball comedy or general humor only enhance the show and every season has big moments and so much heart.  Now that we have our results for the election, this show can be like a tonic for people hoping for some peace and progress in these times where the political climate is so scary. Veep, help us heal! In Selina, we trust. And in Veep: The Complete Series, we can see it all and hold it in our hands too!

SEASON 7

All 7 Seasons of Veep come together in this box set from HBO/Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.  Each Season is represented by 2 discs, save for the shorter final season.  Each disc is a reprint of the individual release, with a new uniform look for the discs. Each disc is the exactly the same otherwise.  The discs come housed in one large clear plastic case that is itself housed in a cardboard slipcase.  The discs are somewhat stacked on one other and are sturdily held by the plastic prongs of the case.

Summary

Veep is a hilarious undertaking on politics.  The show carried itself so well in its 7 year run.  The show cleaned up awards shows and captured audiences attention.  The show made us laugh, and kept us wanting more, all while wondering if the show was super accurate with its political mishaps.  One can only imagine if Veep were still going on, just what kind of crazy we would be in for! As it stands, this new complete series set will be exciting for fans of the show who never bought the individual season releases, but won’t be much for collectors who have them already.  As it stands, this is a great space-saving way to collect the series and it’s excellent HD presentation is intact here.
