Whip It Rolls Onto Blu-ray This January…
The press tagline reads…”Ditching the beauty pageant circuit, a rebellious teenager finds her own ‘tribe’ and uncovers an unshakable bond with her mother.” And here I was hoping Whip It would be about girl-on-girl physical confrontations, bumping and tumbling in the world of roller derby games. Despite my forecasts, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will bring the roller derby drama home to the Blu-ray format on January 26th. Whip It stars Academy Award nominee Ellen Page and showcases Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut. Check out the full press release below from Fox on what goodies you can expect to find on the Blu-ray edition of Whip It. Personally, I am hoping for some wild action scenes and also some great roller skating sequences, but of course.
LOS ANGELES, CA. (December 4, 2009) – The memorable heroine of Juno is back and scores huge laughs as Bliss Cavendar, a blue-haired misfit stuck in a tiny Texas town in Whip It, a coming-of-age comedy skating onto Blu-ray Disc with Digital Copy and DVD January 26 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Tired of following in her family’s footsteps, Bliss discovers a way to put her life on the fast track when she lands a spot on a rough-and-tumble roller derby team. Her journey comes full-circle as she reconnects with her family and finds her own path in the world.
Filled with high-speed action and nonstop fun, the film sports an all-star cast including Golden Globe® nominee** Drew Barrymore (Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle) in her feature film directorial debut, Oscar® winner*** Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River), Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear), Daniel Stern (City Slickers) and Jimmy Fallon (Fever Pitch). The film also features cameo appearances by real life derby girls Rachel Piplica and Kristen Adolfi, better known as “Iron Maiven” and “Krissy Krash” of the Los Angeles Derby Dolls.
The Whip It Blu-ray Disc and DVD feature deleted scenes, an alternate opening and extended scenes and will be available on Blu-ray Disc with Digital Copy on January 26th.
This was a much better movie than I expected it to be. Not great, but solidly entertaining and well acted, and Barrymore proves herself a capable director.
Cool! Good to hear! I am looking forward to hopefully reviewing this on Blu-ray for Fox.
