The Twilight Zone: The Complete Series (Blu-ray Review)
Previously available from Image Entertainment, Paramount Home Entertainment is bringing back The Twilight Zone to Blu-ray. Yes, all 156 episodes of the landmark historic television anthology series are once again being collected together. This is a massive set, including bonus mater, that spans over 5 years of the show airing on television and covering over 24 discs. The set is coming along just in time for the holidays (Will make a great gift for that loved one) and will be available December 13th. So, get ready to hum that theme song and embrace those twisted and dark endings we’ve come to love, admire and be inspired by.
Series
The Twilight Zone is an American science-fiction, fantasy, psychological-supernatural horror anthology television seriescreated by Rod Serling, which ran for five seasons on CBS from 1959 to 1964. The series consists of unrelated dramas depicting characters dealing with paranormal, futuristic, Kafkaesque, or otherwise disturbing or unusual events; characters who find themselves dealing with these strange, sometimes inexplicable happenings are said to have crossed over into “The Twilight Zone”. Each story typically features a moral and a surprise ending.
Rod Serling’s show has always been a staple and heavily discussed, dissected, referenced and in public conscience for the entirety of my life. And it was canceled 18 years before I was born. Reruns have been in constant rotation in syndication, cable television and now on streaming. The show has also been revived a few times (Both for television and radio broadcasts) and had a feature length movie made in the 1980s headed up by folks greatly influenced by the original television show’s run.
The show was an anthology and was a fresh story each week, so it lent itself to having a revolving door of cast members. What many love to get a kick out of looking back is the up and coming future stars as well as talented veterans that came on to do the show. For many, no matter how great their career, doing an episode of The Twilight Zone and working with Rod Serling is seen as a peak or highlight of what is (For some) a remarkable career outside of the show. In addition to the actors, the show is also notable for employing some very talented authors and writers on its staff.
It really says something, the staying power of The Twilight Zone. It holds up incredibly. There are a lot of older shows that are still exciting and watchable, but maybe not as effective. The Twilight Zone will still get you. Maybe its the strong focus on themes and the human condition as opposed to an adventure, a monster or something of the like. Or maybe its the diabolical twists the show has. As a matter of fact we have a terms like “Twilight Zone ending” for a reason. This is a piece of history, a piece you should definitely own. With all the TV out there in the world, collecting it in physical media has almost seemed like too much. But this is the one to have, to revisit. And if you’re “But…but…Netflix!”, just note that Netflix is missing the entirety of Season 4 and you never know if it will always be available there. The Twilight Zone is a show that you should always have available.
Episodes
This set contains all 156 episodes from the show’s original run, 1959-1964.
Video
Encoding: MPEG-4 AVC
Resolution: 1080p
Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1
Layers: BD-50
Clarity/Detail: Those curious should know right off the bat, this is the same transfers…hell…the same exact discs as the previous release from Image Entertainment (The start of the disc still contains its logo). And this is a very good thing. I don’t know what they could do to better this as the show is in great shape. It has a sharp and crisp look that carries plenty of detail. If you’ve not seen this set or the episodes remastered for this, you’re really in for a treat.
Depth: These episodes all provide a surprising and impressive amount of detail. No, its not 3-D, but there is a good separation and smoothness of movement by characters and objects in their environments to go along with good detail in background imagery.
Black Levels: Blacks are deep and rich here. They are a primary color in the mix of course, but they do great with shading, adding depth and sharpness to picture. No crushing witnessed during the episodic viewings done for the is review.
Color Reproduction: N/A
Flesh Tones: Skin tones have a nice gray/white look to them with a consistent appearance from episode to episode and season to season. Details like wrinkles, face lines, blemishes and more come through pretty impressively.
Noise/Artifacts: These episodes all are pretty clean in their appearance with a nice little layer of grain to keep true and accent it.
Audio
Audio Format(s): English Remastered Audio PCM Mono, Original Audio PCM Mono
Subtitles: English SDH
Dynamics: The Twilight Zone carries the ability to watch both a remastered track and the original audio in lossless. Both are mono, but yeah, the remastered does sound much cleaner. Its a bit quieter in terms of extra noise and distortion. But, the original is there for the purists and faithful. The remastered is a solid mix that makes the show sound pretty modern in terms of quality and is impressive in its own way of keeping such a crisp sound for such an old show.
Height: N/A
Low Frequency Extension: N/A
Surround Sound Presentation: N/A
Dialogue Reproduction: Dialogue is crisp and clean in the remastered track, as to be expected. Diction and vocal inflections all come across with good clarity. No real analog/dated sort of hissing and whatnot is every really apparent.
Extras
The Twilight Zone: The Complete Series is a 24-disc set. Bonus features are accessed by selecting individual episodes. The Zicree interviews and Rod Serling lecture features are audio only that play over the episodes like a commentary track.

Summary
The Twilight Zone is one of the most monumental and influential television shows of all time. And you can own every second of it here in this set. Now, if you already own the previous series set from Image Entertainment, just go ahead and hold onto it. This is the same exact set with some different, cheaper packaging. Same transfer, same audio, same extras…hell, the disc authoring is the same and still has the Image logo on it. That set is out of print though, so this is your second chance to grab it, which…should belong on the shelf of every film/tv buff and serious collector.
