Teen Wolf – Season 4 (DVD Review)
In Teen Wolf – Season 4 a high-school teen cursed with the werewolf virus must constantly defend innocents from supernatural creatures who seek power and to quench their undying blood lusts. With a ragtag group of friends, both immortal and mortal, he manages to save as many lives as possible while uncovering truths and plots that affect his team, as well as him. All the while, he continues to keep up a normal profile and attend classes with unsuspecting youths.
This 12 episode, 3 disc set includes 5 DVD extras and a collector’s book of “Bestiary—A compilation of supernatural creatures” for the fans to page through. Episodes in Season 4 star Tyler Posey, Dylan O’Brien, Linden Ashby, Holland Roden, Arden Cho and Tyler Hoechlin. A typical cast for a teen demographic show filled with coming of age angst and lots of dramatic twists and plots which are at times laden with action sequences. Impressive special effects at times, add to the screenplay to help make this show interesting and enjoyable to view.
I have never watched this series and I am coming into it in Season 4. Although there is a lot of character set up that I have missed out on, it seems pretty easy to decipher where everyone is along the way. The biggest thing mentioned but wasn’t really clear is about how Scott becomes an alpha. They mention that he wasn’t born into it and that he achieved it without taking life. I’m sure that those of you that have watched the other 3 seasons know more about that than I do.
There are a lot of holes as in any collaborative multi-season show. You ask, why he doesn’t use his super strength that he just used 4 episodes ago, here with this creature in this battle? Why didn’t that character know what was going on when 2 episodes they had an ability to detect this or that? And the list of holes goes on. Again, this seems to be typical when viewing a multi-season, multi-penned show. Someone should be consulted to make sure that writer X doesn’t stomp all over writer Y’s set up previously established and made prominent in a previous show.
Although coming into this one in season 4, I actually binge watched this entire set in two days. I became addicted and wanted to know how they would resolve this or deal with that, etc. The cast seems well oiled and conducive to great story telling. The special effects were impressive in places. But, after watching the season, I didn’t find myself wanting to go find Season 5 episodes to continue or even go back and watch the other three previous seasons. So, if I come across other episodes from other seasons, I may watch, but I just don’t find myself driven to purposely seek them out. Most likely this is because I came into the middle of the show and didn’t grow with the characters or it is because of all the holes in plots from one episode to the next from the multi-writers continuity issues.
Season 4 begins with the rescue of Derek Hale from a Jaguar Aztec tomb from Kate. The mystical ritual has caused a new problem for Scott and his crew, as Derek is physically and mentally changed from this ordeal. In the meantime, they fight a Windigo, attempt to track down 117 million in bearer bonds stolen from a secret vault in the Hale family bunker, Scott infects a fellow lacrosse team-mate in order to save his life, Kira and Scot’s first kiss happens, a weaponized distemper out-break targeting the wolves is unleashed, the identity of “The Benefactor” is revealed, Scott is turned into a Beserker and set to kill his friends, and Scott and Peter have a final showdown.

Summary: I would give this one a 3.5 out of 5 doggies. Overall, Season 4 is OK. The holes and inconsistency of character’s abilities and not having grown with the show was a big negative for me. The story flow and the special effects kept me interested enough to binge watch the entire season in two days. The cast seems very well assembled. It is fun, entertaining, and impressive in parts. It just didn’t hook me to watch more or go back and catch up.
