Deadpool & Wolverine (Cinematic Universe Edition) (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)
I don’t know about you, but I really missed Wolverine. I missed that gruff, hard, yet lovable X-man! I was in tears when he met his fate at the end of Logan and thought that was that. When the worlds of Deadpool and Wolverine were to collide in the appropriately titled Deadpool & Wolverine, I was ready to run to the nearest theater to see the film. And then I didn’t. Now, arriving home with a lovely DOLBY VISION 4K UHD Blu-ray from Disney/Sony, I have been able to witness the chaotic wonder of the film. Read about that and more below and be sure to click whichever cover art you want at the end to get your copy today!
Film:
“Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date – Deadpool & Wolverine. A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his home world faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit up again with an even more reluctantlier… reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to… oh hell, just watch the movie. Synopses are stupid.”
I can’t disagree one bit about that synopsis you just read. You just must watch this movie to see what’s going on. There’s a LOT of course and the film moves fast and loose for the whole 128-minute runtime. As has been stat3ed, Wade Wilson is trying to work his way back into normal life. He’s working for a used car dealership and trying like hell to see a Kia Carnival. This doesn’t work, because why would it? When the Time Variance Authority (TVA) tracks down Wade, they capture him for Mr. Paradox who persuades Wade to become Deadpool once more to fix his timeline before it disintegrates forever. The problem? He has to go through many timelines to bring back Logan, whose death is what caused the deterioration in the first place.
Travelling from timeline to timeline and killing Logan after Logan or being “killed” himself until the right one comes along, Deadpool has a lot on his plate. Once the right one comes along, the two of course hate one another. When the pair become suspicious of Mr. Paradox, he banishes them the Void, where they meet many “lost” supes – Johnny Storm (who is captured and eliminated immediately…) Blade, Electra, Laura and Gambit. They’ve been in the void avoiding Cassandra Nova, Charles Xavier’s ageless twin sister. She is evil and wants to control as many timelines as she can with her own time jumping and mind controlling skills. She’s nearly unbeatable – But can our ragtag duo, their banished pals and a whole gaggle of Deadpools including a very Canadian “Nicepool” with his faithful pup “Dogpool” save the day and fix the timeline?
The film sounds like a lot when you write it out. It is in fact a lot. And some of the plot threads are there with moments that may confound those of us that aren’t All Marvel all the time. One specific and important plot point comes from the series Loki (Season 1, Episode 5 to be exact) and if you haven’t seen the show, you may be confused like I was. The biggest saving grace of this film is that Ryan Reynolds (who also wrote the film) along with his co-stars are so self-aware and willing to break the fourth wall enough that we are let into the film deeper, with a tongue placed firmly in cheek. Make no mistake, the third entry into the Deadpool series is definitely a comedy first.
And laughs are had! As a queer writer, I have to wonder how many straight audiences caught on to the specific gay coded humor in the film. I had to wonder how many people still brought their kids to the film knowing it would be vulgar, sexual and full of foul language. But here we are, milestones achieved and coming home on physical media. Did the film live up to the hype? I think In many ways, the film just works. It’s breezy and fun and fast. There are moments that are emotional too, and refreshingly, there wasn’t a necessity for a love story or for the two main characters to become best friends. At best, the film works well standing right up to the other two films. As worst, the film can be confusing and a little too video game in its approach to the action sequences.
At the end of the day, I believe that Deadpool & Wolverine is a success on most levels. The comedy hits, the action beats are fast and furious. The story can sag with some of the self-deprecation that is peppered in the script. The sagging moments are lifted by the talented and game cast. The music is a blast too! Editing is top notch and keeps things moving along in excellent ways. At the end, you get a very sweet and nostalgic look back at the X-Men and Fantastic Four series that I feel will make anyone smile. So yes, the film is a good one, and yes, it earned its 1 billion + at the box office. I do wish it was tightened up a bit, but my minor gripes aside, the film is a winner!

Aspect Ratio: 2.39:1
Layers: BD-66
HDR: Dolby Vision
Clarity/Detail: Many will gripe about the 66 GB disc being a problem for the transfer of Deadpool & Wolverine. I’m here to tell you, there’s no need for worry. The film looks excellent, and I saw no instances of macro-blocking or pixelization. The film is sharp and clean and the 4K crisp that collectors LOVE to have at home.
Depth: Depth of field is always sharp and focused. The film is shot digitally and has many special effects moments. With the huge use of CGI, the camera work has no time to become out of focus, and so you’ll always see things loud and clear.
Black Levels: Shadow detail and the like all look excellent. Black crush is not in sight, and all looks well in the darker corners of the film.
Color Reproduction: Colors are reproduced faithfully. The red and yellow suits of our titular heroes’ pop and the worlds we time travel through all look fantastic overall.
Flesh Tones: Flesh tones are faithfully rendered throughout.

Height: Height channels are used to great effect in action sequences. Some moments see sounds panning slightly while other moments use the height speakers in an extended surround capacity.
Low-Frequency Extension: Bass booms for music (Like A Prayer SLAPS!), with special consideration for time travel sound effects, battles and gunfire, and more action beats.
Surround Sound Presentation: Surrounds play amazingly in big moments and small, you can always hear some sound surrounding you!
Dialogue Reproduction: Clean

Hooray for some fun special features! Not a vast amount but just enough for those that like extras to be satiated! Summary:
Deadpool & Wolverine is not perfect. But the film is also funny, heartfelt, and really big in scale! It’s hard to deny the film even if I do feel it was far overhyped. I can’t knock the cast or the writers or director Shawn Levy either. I had a good time with the film and in 4K on disc, this is one to savor. The sound and video quality are top notch and if you love the other Deadpool films, there’s no doubt you’ll have a lot of love for this one too!
