Gregg’s Best Comics of 2023

It was the year of debuts on a number of levels in 2023. As a result of Disney being the largest shareholder of 20th Century Fox, the Predator and Alien franchises saw their mini-series come out under Marvel instead of Dark Horse. In another publisher switch, Transformers and G.I. Joe recently got their reboot under Image instead of the recently familiar IDW. Meanwhile, characters like DC’s Beast Girl and Marvel’s Hallow’s Eve made their entrances this year as well. But after all the firsts, which titles rose above the smoke?

Goodbye To You, Why So Blu!

With the posting of this piece, my tenure at Why So Blu? has come to a close. After 10+ years and publishing over 1,800 reviews and articles, I have returned my keys to the building to Brian White. I walk away on my own accord with nothing but glowing things to say about Brian and my time here writing for the site I’ve called home for so long. No, I have not succumbed to the giant, spooky streaming monster. I will still be collecting, promoting, and having a passion for physical media after this. It’s something that is never going to change in me.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

In a world of constant IP dumps, one brand has remained strong since it launched in the 1980s – the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This past summer they relaunched with a new movie, Mutant Mayhem. Not their first fully animated movie outing, but this one decided to be Spider-Verse and buck a traditional animation style for something a little more punk rock and innovative. And it succeeded in having outstanding reviews and strong box office despite stiff competition from the Barbenheimer moment. You’ll be able to bring it home on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray with an Atmos track and some featurettes when it arrives on December 12th. You can order yourself a copy using the paid Amazon Associate link following the review.

Young Guns – 35th Anniversary Steelbook (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Regulators! Lionsgate has gotten the gang back together, so to speak, with this 35th anniversary release of Young Guns on 4K UHD Blu-ray. Complete with some new extra material, this enjoyable 80s Western has been given just the polish it needed to truly show how it rides with the best of them. As a retelling of the adventures of Billy the Kid, this movie is mean and lean, with a hip young cast for its time. As one who had never seen the film before, I was quite pleased with the results. On top of that, a good-looking and sounding presentation really helps show how wild the West could be for this fancy steelbook package.

The Color Purple (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Warner has spent a good part of their centenary dedicating themselves to restoring and putting out some of the best films in their history out on the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format. It features a new restoration, archival bonus features and a new one about the upcoming musical film adaptation that is only on the digital version. Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Harrison Ford took one last adventure with his signature character, Indiana Jones, this past summer. Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny found elder self getting a final bit of closure for Ford and (ideally) the Jones. While well received, it wasn’t something the theater going audiences were that interested in seeing. You’ll be able to own it this holiday season when it comes to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray. This release boasts an Atmos track, score-only track and a 5-part making of documentary. Oddly enough, concurrent with this, Disney+ released a career documentary on Ford centered around this that is not found on this release (And would have suited it perfectly). You can check it all out when it arrives on December 5th. You can order yourself a copy from the paid Amazon Associate link that follows the review below.

The Creator (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

One of the more refreshing releases of 2023 was Gareth Edward’s original science fiction fantasy film, The Creator. Like it or not, the prospect of getting some big scale, ideological special effects sci-fi offerings playing in theaters feels like a win and triumph just in getting there. The film received solid reviews, but unfortunately did not ignite the box office. Hopefully, it doesn’t perturb the studios from stepping outside of the IP safety net. You can own it on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray on December 12th, complete with an Atmos track and near hour long documentary on making the film. Seems like a good package for a film that didn’t really rake in the dough. You can order yourself a copy by using the paid Amazon Associates link following the review.

Oppenheimer (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

There were two movies people REALLY wanted to see this past summer, and they came out on the same day. Barbie did the bigger overall business, but it may be Oppenheimer that was much more surprising and impressive considering the kinds of movies we think aren’t worth putting in theaters anymore. Almost clearing a billion dollars and being the hottest IMAX ticket in town, Oppenheimer is finally yours to own. The Christopher Nolan masterstroke released on November 21st and features a good handful of bonus features.
