Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn – Deluxe Vinyl re-issue available on Jan. 13th from Mondo.

Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn - Deluxe Vinyl re-issue available on Jan. 13th from Mondo. From “Mondo” comes the original score for the classic film “Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn” composed by James Horner.  This deluxe re-issue is pressed on 180 Gram 2XLP Mutara Nebula colored Vinyl, features breathtaking original artwork by Matt Taylor, exclusive liner notes by Devin Faraci, and has been remastered for Vinyl by James Plotkin.

The score for the first Star Trek film, “Star Trek: The Motion Picture”, was composed by Jerry Goldsmith.  So needless to say, Horner had some big shoes to fill when taking on it’s sequel.  Luckily for us, he wholeheartedly lived up to the challenge.  I have always been a huge fan of the late great James Horner.  You’ve probably heard his music from James Cameron’s “Aliens” in a bunch of movie trailers, or his unforgettable themes from the box office juggernaut “Titanic”.  But my personal favorite, hands down, has to be his score for the Don Bluth animated film “The Land Before Time”.  Maybe I saw it at JUST the right moment when I was a kid, but that music really knows EXACTLY how to tug on your heart strings.  “Wrath of Kahn” is no different.  Having one of the most heart breaking scenes in Star Trek history, this Vinyl release is a must have for any self respecting Trekkie or Trekker. Usagi Yojimbo 151, The Bride

UsagiUsagi Yojimbo has been around for thirty-one years, literally as long as I’ve been alive, and it’s still going strong. That is a huge feat for a comic, as many series usually run start to finish in the span of several years, not decades. This duration is a testament to the quality of the work. No comic could ever hope to last this long if it weren’t stellar, as this series proves time and again. I’m not lumping this title in with old school super hero titles such as Batman or Spiderman. Those series have been around for long time, sure, but they are handed off from writer to writer, from artist to artist, and rebooted on such a regular basis that it becomes difficult to perceive them as one, continuous body of work. Usagi Yojimbo, however, is precisely that; one massive body of work created, written, and illustrated by Stan Sakai. Continue reading ‘Usagi Yojimbo 151, The Bride’

Sinister 2 (Blu-ray Review)

Sinister 2Arriving by way of Blu-ray on January 12th, from Director Ciarán Foy (Citadel), Sinister 2 is coming to seduce your children to project film onto your wall and then gruesomely murder you while recording it. And he is back to make right the tragedy of his friend Ellison Oswalt, who never even asked his name, and to end the chain of murders brought about to appease the sinister Bughuul. Why Marvel’s Winning, DC’s Losing and Valiant is Better Than Both of Them

I’m a bagpiper. Yeah I know, what the heck does that have to do with comic books, right? Bear with me as there’s a point to this. In the bagpiper community, we have a running joke as to how the rest of the world views our music. It goes something like this, “There are three tunes played on the bagpipes; Scotland the Brave, Amazing Grace and everything else.” That stereotype likely came about due to how so many tunes sound alike on the instrument. The same can be said of comic book publishers to the layman. There are three names in the comic book publishing world; Marvel, DC and everyone else. However, that ‘everyone else’ group puts out some of the most incredible stories in the genre.

We Are Your Friends (DVD Review)

We_Are_Your_FriendsWith the proliferation and international appeal of electronic music it is hard to explain why such a fresh and ripe new movement hasn’t garnished more attention from the film industry. The first feature film directed by Max Joseph(Catfish: The TV Show), We Are Your Friends attempts to shine the cinematic light on this relatively new and emerging genre of music. Following the story of a young up-and-coming DJ, Cole Carter(Zac Efron), We Are Your Friends brings the audience into the club, and the heart of club music. Quickly taken under the wing of veteran DJ James Reed(Wes Bentley), Cole begins to find his own style and works his way into the main stream circuit. Utilizing a wonderful soundtrack, a few scenes of drug-induced surrealism, a great performance from Wes Bentley, and the age old tale of self-discovery We Are Your Friends sounds like a great way to spend a Friday night, but somehow fails to find its beat.

Aaron’s Most Anticipated Films Of 2016 (Based On What’s Scheduled)

panther-001This is always a tough list to put together. I see over a hundred movies a year and a lot of those films are ones I’ve been anticipating to some degree, while many others are smaller films that randomly arrive on the calendar months after the start of the year. I am aware there are a lot of directors I admire who have films being completed in time for Cannes and other film festivals and are expected to be in theaters sometime this year as well, but I’ve decided to only go with what has been scheduled so far and go month by month. I am curious to hear what others have to say as well, so feel free to add thoughts in the comments.

The Revenant Is A Dish Best Served Cold (Movie Review)

The RevenantThe Revenant is billed as a Western thriller.  Normally I’m not one at all for a Western (unless it’s a Tarantino), but you throw the word “thriller” in there and I’m all over it.  Add to the fact that the critics and media are saying this is finally going to be the one for Leonardo DiCaprio (despite his limited vocabulary here) and once again I’m there.  Now listen closely as this third bullet point is the one that really got my sweet behind in the theater seat last month for this one.  “They” (the powers that be) said the brutality in this one is out of this world, and I said oh snap, count me in!  There’s obviously much more to factually discuss here, but now you at least know what appeals to me (and knowing is half the battle).  The question to tackle now is whether or not The Revenant will appeal to you.  Let’s get started! Gerard’s Top Films of 2015!

70mm2015 was a great year for movies and it seems that most of them, or at least most of the good ones, are saved for December. I was busy catching up on films right up until New Year’s Eve. I may be a week late but better late than never when it comes to film. This list is technically my “Top 11 or 12” but I could have made it bigger but then that wouldn’t be efficient. There are quite a few surprises in store, as well. In any event – I give you my favorite films of 2015!  Continue reading ‘Gerard’s Top Films of 2015!’
