Escape From New York – Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray Review)

Escape-From-New-York-Collectors-EditionCan I gloat for just a brief second to start this off?  Back in 2013 when I reviewed Scream Factory’s release of John Carpenter’s Body Bags, I mentioned that if there were to be an Escape From New York Collector’s Edition, that I’d like the collective that were interviewing John Carpenter to be involved with that one.  It was just a mere fan dream/wish, but on social media and message boards people started questioning “Is Scream Factory doing Escape From New York?  Will they do Escape From New York?  Please do Escape From New York!”  Here we are, a year and a half after that review and I’m now covering Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition of John Carpenter’s Escape From New York.  No, this wasn’t my idea and I’m sure my review had nothing to do with this at all, but its pretty cool that my wish came true.  Anyway, onto one of the most highly anticipated titles of the year! Singles (Blu-ray Review)

singlesBefore receiving Singles on Blu-ray, I had never seen it. As a fan of Cameron Crowe, I have always felt like I’ve been missing out, given how I assumed there was a good film here that I hadn’t had the chance to see. That said, all I really knew was that the film had a great, grunge-heavy soundtrack and was supposedly the inspiration for Friends (according to Crowe). Now having seen the film, it definitely gave me a neat look back at the 90s, along with a sense of completion, when it comes to the work of Crowe. Fortunately for the fans that have been waiting, this Blu-ray not only features the film in HD, but is stocked with a whole bunch of deleted scenes and more.

‘Focus’ Your Sight On Its Blu-ray Release This June

FocusFocus is one of those films I initially saw trailers for on television and thought to myself nah I’ll skip it.  It just didn’t look that appealing to me.  Than came all the reviews like Aaron Neuwirth’s positive coverage here.  And so because of all the positive praise this film has garnered, sign me up!  I want to see it!  Thankfully I have less than 2 months to wait now and Warner Bros. officially announced a June 2nd Blu-ray release date for the Will Smith vehicle, Focus.  Check out the film’s trailer and full press release from Warner Bros. down below. Exclusive ‘Detroit Rock City’ Blu-ray Interview w/ Director Adam Rifkin

KISS - Adam Rifkin InterviewYou wanted the best, you got the best!  Finally heading to the Blu-ray party today, after many years spent missing in action, the 1999 cult classic Detroit Rock City will be making its presence known by shouting it out loud in living rooms everywhere courtesy of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment/New Line Cinema.  If you know what Detroit Rock City is all about, then hopefully my little “shout it out loud” play with words didn’t go right over your head (sound the failure trumpet).  On as serious note though, this former Cleveland, OH resident, which this film fictitiously starts out in, and lifelong KISS fan couldn’t be happier about this news as being a Blu-ray snob I sold my DVD version of the film many moons ago and have been anxiously waiting for this day to come.  That magic day in KISSTORY, which I have been referring to all paragraph long thus far, is TODAY!  Yep that’s right, the boys are back in town today and to celebrate this hotly anticipated day in KISSTORY with fans everywhere I thought what better way than to sit down and partake in a chat with the man ultimately responsible for bringing the Carl V. Dupré vision to life onscreen, the multi-talented Mr. Adam Rifkin and a few other surprises. Continue reading ‘Exclusive ‘Detroit Rock City’ Blu-ray Interview w/ Director Adam Rifkin’

JUPITER ASCENDING Ascends To Blu-ray June 2nd!

Jupiter-AscendingJupiter Ascending is likely the most polarizing film of 2015’s first quarter.  Nobody went to see it and a lot of those that did, didn’t really care for it.  Personally, as a fan of the Wachowskis, it was one I was anticipating regardless of whether or not it was delayed.  Was it a good or great film?  No, not really and its admittedly a bit of a mess.  There was plenty to behold in it and appreciate, and it does entertain (I particular dug Drew McWeeny’s review of it over at HitFix).  For me, I’d rather take the ambitious/noble failure and film that just goes for it over something mediocre, safe or average any day of the week.  I’ll remember and take with me things both good and bad from Jupiter Ascending while forgetting films of the other ilk.  Jordan Grout had the best defense of this science fiction extravaganza when it came out stating “How can this movie be the worst?  It has freaking dinosaurs flying spaceships!”  Its coming to Blu-ray where I’m sure more will peak their curiosity and it will either continue to be hated or find itself the beginning of cult status.  We’ll see.  For now, check out the release announcement and details by scrolling down below. Enter The Dangerous Mind (Blu-ray Review)

Enter-The-Dangerous-MindFrom the filmmaking team of Youssef Delara and Victor Teran (Bedrooms) comes the thriller ENTER THE DANGEROUS MIND, starring Jake Hoffman (The Wolf of Wall Street), Nikki Reed (Twilight franchise), Thomas Dekker (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Jason Priestley (“Beverly Hills, 90210”), Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”) and Scott Bakula (“NCIS: New Orleans”).  Debuting on Blu-ray and DVD April 14 from Well Go USA Entertainment and Amplify, the film is a terrifying study of mental illness and the destruction unleashed when someone finally snaps. ENTER THE DANGEROUS MINDfollows a reclusive composer (Hoffman) with an online following who has a tentative romance with a beautiful social worker (Reed). While this romance offers a glimmer of hope, his mind fractures as the voices in his head grow louder and more destructive.  Continue reading ‘Enter The Dangerous Mind (Blu-ray Review)’

Empire Records (Blu-ray Review)

Empire-RecordsOdd as it may sound, Empire Records is actually a bonafide cult classic.  As much as people of my age range talked about it, quoted it and the frequency with which we watched it, we were in the minority.  The film has been more appreciated on in more recent years, and especially in our nostalgia drenched society, which comes as a bit of a surprise.  This film was loathed by critics and really not seen by audiences.  It didn’t get much of a wide release, but here’s a fun fact; Empire Records didn’t even make one million dollars at the box office.  I would be interested to see the home video intake for the film though, as it seems to have caught on their and grown to a more widespread popularity.  Its also a home media survivor, making the jump to DVD and now crossing over into Blu-ray. Hooper (Blu-ray Review)

HooperHere we are in 1978 where Burt Reynolds is peaking so very damn hard.  While some may now be like “Hoop-what?”, Hooper was a big deal in 1978.  The film was a follow up to the massive hit, Smokey and the Bandit the year prior.  Smokey would have been the biggest film of 1977 had it not been for that pesky Star Wars movie.  It marked a quick reteaming of stuntman-turned director Hal Needham with Burt Reynolds and Sally Field.  Field and Reynolds were also a huge onscreen item back then, doing a plenty of films together in a short run.  Hooper ended up being a huge success too being the 6th highest grossing film of the year and kept Reynolds and his teaming up with Neeham running. Long Weekend (Blu-ray Review)

Long-WeekendUpon its 2005 DVD release, the Australian thriller LONG WEEKEND quickly became one of the most highly-regarded films in the Synapse Films library, later to be prominently featured in Mark Hartley’s acclaimed documentary NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD and remade by director Jamie Blanks (URBAN LEGEND) in 2008. Fans have long requested a Blu-ray upgrade for this unrelenting Aussie classic, now making its high-def debut on a stunning new Synapse Blu-ray!  From the writer of ROAD GAMES and RAZORBACK comes this “spooky little gem” (Premiere Magazine), presented in a high-definition transfer from original vault materials with a re-mastered DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround soundtrack created by Synapse Films.

Sharky’s Machine (Blu-ray Review)

Sharky's MachineBurt Reynolds was a busy man in the late 70s and early 80s.  He was one of the biggest film stars in the world.  And in 1981 he made three films.  Most memorable of them and popular is likely The Cannonball Run.  Another positive mark for Reynolds would be his adaptation of William Diehl’s novel, Sharky’s Machine, which he not only starred but directed.  Reynolds told rival larger than life actor/director Clint Eastwood that if he was going to make one of his movies (Referring to Every Which Way But Loose), then he was going to do Dirty Harry in Atlanta.  Sharky’s Machine wound up being another big hit for Reynolds, and his highest grossing directed film at the box office internationally. Everly (Blu-ray Review)

Everly (Blu-ray Review)Everly is one of those films where I feel like I’ve been waiting forever to see.  No, I’m not going to divulge whether I liked it or not just yet, but what I mean by that is ever since its VOD release in January I have been resisting the urge to buy or rent just so my first viewing could either be on the big screen or on my HD format of choice, Blu-ray.  Regrettably I had a chance to see it when it was in town here playing as a double-header with Adam Green’s Digging Up The Marrow at the Alamo Drafthouse, but wouldn’t you know it fate intertwined and I had business to conduct out of town.  Nevertheless, I didn’t give up hope that one day I’d bask in what I read to be one very violent femme fatale of flick.  And that day has come!  Ladies and gentlemen…Everly. WonderCon 2015: Wayward Pines

6180109_GWonderCon is here and while the high profile slate seems a lot lighter than normal (too many cons these days I suppose), there are still some worthwhile panels this year. One of them was for the upcoming Fox miniseries Wayward Pines. If you have been wondering where Wayward Pines is, don’t worry, so have I. The show screened its pilot episode at Comic-con last year, but has been MIA ever since. Now we know this M. Night Shyamalan mystery series will be premiering in May, which is good, because based on the pilot episode, there is a lot of promise here.

Ghoulies / Ghoulies II (Blu-ray Review)

Ghoulies-Double-FeatureLook out or they’ll get you in the end! Scream Factory proudly presents a monstrous double feature of Ghoulies and Ghoulies II on Blu-ray. New bonus features include an audio commentary with Ghoulies director Luca Bercovici and interviews with executive producer Charles Band.  These films were a staple of the Ma and Pa video stores back in the 80s and 90s.  They were a part of the influx of movies that were trying to cash in on whatever it was they saw and liked in Joe Dante’s Gremlins.  Community recently did a riff on something like that with their incredibly perfect “Portuguese Gremlins” spoof.  Ghoulies had the sort of chums like Critters coming in around the same time.  They came from the house of Puppet Master, Full Moon, but this double feature is teaming up with Scream Factory.
