The Descent: Part 2… NOT Coming to Blu-ray?

The Descent: Part 2It’s Monday morning.  I lost an hour of my day yesterday due to Daylight Savings Time.  I think I deserve the right to be a little crabby today.  Actually, I was doing OK until I stumbled upon the following press release.  And this will also be one of the few times you ever hear me talk about a DVD release.  Words cannot express how disappointed I am right now with my favorite Blu-ray movie studio Lionsgate.  Not only did I get dissed because the following film never came to the theaters in the States, but I am also getting dissed from seeing/owning it on the Blu-ray format.  Of course, I’m talking about a little well known horror film called The Descent: Part 2

2005’s The Descent was among my top horror films of the past decade.  The film came out of nowhere.  The buzz grew strong about this unkown film upon its first week in the theaters.  So strong in fact that I came out of my cave and ventured out to see it.  I had a bloody good time with it and an even better time showing it to friends and family on Blu-ray.  So needless to say, I have been looking forward with much anticipation to the second installment and seeing some more crawler action.  Today…my dreams are shattered.  I realize that I am going to come across as a snob by saying this, but unless The Descent: Part 2 hits the Blu-ray format I will be sitting this one out with no regrets.  I am heartbroken.  For those of you that care.  I have included the Amazon pre-order link and the Lionsgate press release below.  Who knows?  Maybe it’s for the best.  I mean there must be a reason why this did not show theatrically in the U.S. and is coming straight to DVD.  Do you think?  Happy Monday!

The Descent: Part 2, the chilling sequel to the critically acclaimed and globally successful horror hit, The Descent, makes its DVD debut from Lionsgate.  Distraught, confused, and half-wild with fear, Sarah Carter (Shauna MacDonald) emerges alone from the Appalachian cave system where she encountered unspeakable terrors. Unable to plausibly explain to the authorities what happened – or why she’s covered in her friends’ blood – Sarah is forced back to the subterranean depths to help locate her five missing companions. Hailed as a “…hugely entertaining film, with plenty of gore, shocks and surprises” by Bloody-Disgusting.com, the DVD features bonus materials that include audio commentary with the director and cast, deleted scenes, the featurette “The Making of The Descent: Part 2: Deeper and Darker,” and storyboards.  The Descent: Part 2 debuts on DVD April 27, 2010.

There’s always a chance it’ll come out on Blu Ray in overseas, if it hasn’t already. The lack of theatrical release used to be a bad sign, but any more it seems like some of the best horror movies in recent years have gone straight to video (‘Martyrs’, ‘Trick R Treat’), so who knows. I’m sure I’ll give this a look when it comes out.

You will have to tell me how it is Bob. I appreciate it. I think the Blu-ray will be available in UK, but not sure about region codes.

Time to import. If the UK gets a release, then I will have it.

  4. Brian White

It will come out in the UK as a Blu-ray Region 2. What is wrong with an American release? This sucks!

  5. Gerard Iribe

Brian, it’s time to go region free.

  6. Brian White

Ha ha. I have 5 Blu-ray players and not one of them is region free. I will vicariously through you as you tell me all about the UK Blu-ray experience. Thanks again Lionsgate!

  7. Gerard

Brian, sell a couple of them players, and you’ll have enough for a nice region free player.

    Do not resist.

    lol

Hmmm, I never cared for the original but I give it points for originality. How disappointing that films are still being released on dvd only. What if the new Rob Zombie album only came out on audio cassette? Backwards!

I know, but not really interested in paying the inflated prices of imports. I have several region free ones, but really have no desire to pay a premium.

Looks like it’s available for pre-order at Amazon.Uk and Amazaon France.

If anything, I’ll go with the UK release later on down the road.

Both the French and UK Blu-ray discs are Region 2 🙁

Why has Lionsgate forsaken me?! Ok. I’ll shut up now.
