WonderCon 2012: Starship Troopers: Invasion

Everyone fights.  No one quits.  During WonderCon, many arrived to the main ballroom (which holds around 4,000 people) early in order to catch some of the bigger panels that would be happening later on in the day.  The first thing to actually occur in the ballroom that day was a series of trailers for many upcoming films.  All of the trailers had been seen at this point, but the one exception was the trailer that played at the very end of this entertaining reel.  This new trailer was for Starship Troopers:  Invasion, an upcoming direct-to-Blu-ray and DVD CG-animated film.  The film is apparently a sequel to the first Starship Troopers film and is set to arrive this summer.  Little else is known so far, but read on to find out a bit more and to see the trailer.

Official film synopsis:

A distant Federation outpost Fort Casey comes under attack by bugs. The team on the fast attack ship Alesia is assigned to help the Starship John A. Warden stationed in Fort Casey evacuate along with the survivors and bring military intelligence safely back to Earth. Carl Jenkins, now ministry of Paranormal Warfare, takes the starship on a clandestine mission before its rendezvous with the Alesia and goes missing in the nebula. Now, the battle-hardened troopers are charged with a rescue mission that may lead to a much more sinister consequence than they ever could have imagined….

While I have not been a big fan of the past couple sequels, I still have a great deal of love for the original Paul Verhoeven film for a number of reasons.  Beyond being a slick action film, it delivered a lot of fun in the way of being a satirical take on war and government, while also delivering high in the way of creature effects and gore.  I am not sure how this new CG film will play out, but it does have Johnny Rico himself, Casper Van Dien, and the first film’s screenwriter, Edward Neumeier, in executive producer roles.  Given that I do enjoy the world that was created for this series, I can only hope that the same sort of spirit can be captured for this latest installment.
