When A Stranger Calls Back (Blu-ray Review)

Mill Creek has held onto the rights for the classic horror film When A Stranger Calls for many years, in a bare bones 2-pack with Happy Birthday To Me. While Second Sight released a UK set last year (Region Free) that included the sequel, its never had a proper US release until now! Scream Factory is putting out the 1993 Showtime film When A Stranger Calls back that features new interviews with Fred Dalton, Carole Kane and Jill Schoelen as well as the original short film The Sitter that started it all. This is a nice compliment to that bare bones Mill Creek release and one fans should be pretty happy with. They’ve even gone a step above and added the option to watch it in a more theatrical 1.78:1 aspect ratio. Let’s take a look, shall we? Continue reading ‘When A Stranger Calls Back (Blu-ray Review)’

‘Rondo’ on DVD & VOD June 4, 2019!

Twisted, kinky and violent, Rondo is a highly stylized pulp noir revenge-murder melodrama that relishes in the dark underbelly of civility. Troubled war vet Paul (Luke Sorge) is told by a psychiatrist that sex may be the solution to his dependency and drinking problems. She sends him to an apartment where he is to release his tensions by having sex with a beautiful young woman, all under the encouraging eyes of the woman’s husband. But deception is the name of the game as Paul and eventually his sister, are sucked into a bizarre criminal underworld where sex and murder are daily specials and revenge is served piping hot. Part black comedy, part slasher and part homage to the seedy films of 1970s grindhouse cinema, writer/director Drew Barnhardt has created a wholly unique American Indie. The Prisoner Of Second Avenue (Blu-ray Review)

Accompanying both Shaft sequels’ Blu-ray releases in the month of May (CANNOT WAIT for those!) from Warner Archive Collection Blu-ray debut of 1974 Melvin Frank film The Prisoner of Second Avenue. The Jack Lemmon/Anne Bancroft starrer looks to have been out of print on DVD (Going for $50 on Amazon currently. Oof), so getting the Blu-ray upgrade is both good for the quality and the wallet of those who’d like to add it to their film library. This is an interesting film that wasn’t too hot reception-wise when it came out, but seems like a forgotten film candidate to maybe have another look at. And a nice new presentation is one of the best ways to do that. Continue reading ‘The Prisoner Of Second Avenue (Blu-ray Review)’

Earthquake – Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray Review)

Growing up, 1974’s Earthquake felt like a legendary “big deal” film to me. It was a big time disaster movie, starred a huge star in Charlton Heston and had a ride/theme park attraction at Universal Studio. As time as passed by, I feel its fallen out of public consciousness and sort of is a forgotten blockbuster. As we endure the trend of superhero films now, if you look back at the 1970s, disaster movies were that of its era. And Earthquake is one of the most notable ones of the era. Its also seen 2 bare bones releases on Blu-ray which Shout! Factory is rectifying with this pretty loaded Collector’s Edition featuring a new scan and the TV cut of the film! A must have for blockbuster enthusiasts, it releases on May 21st. Pre-order now! Continue reading ‘Earthquake – Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray Review)’

Cold Pursuit (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Liam Neeson — A name now synonymous with revenge action-thrillers. He will find you, and he will kill you. A fan of the genre will take note right now in their heads of all the films they’ve seen with Mr. Neeson kicking butt and taking names. There truly are quite a few, some good and some bad. Cold Pursuit takes our favorite “wronged man” and puts him in a bleak Colorado winter setting. The results here are like something we’ve seen before, but with a few very welcomed quirks and some unexpected humor. Supported by a strong narrative, some truly interesting plot twists, and the occasional laugh out loud moments, this newest piece feels more like a drama with some action than a knock down, drag out action film. Bundle up for the cold details below on this newest Neeson entry that hit stores May 14th! Continue reading ‘Cold Pursuit (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

‘Last Hurrah For Chivalry & Hand Of Death: Two Films By John Woo’ (Eureka Classics) Blu-ray & DVD June 24, 2019!

A decade before he would change action filmmaking forever with A Better Tomorrow and The Killer, director John Woo was directing martial-arts films for the two biggest studios in Hong Kong, Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest. Under the mentorship of the great Chang Cheh (Five Deadly Venoms), Woo began to develop his signature style, films that featured slick, stylish and often violent choreography, with dramatic plots that revolved around brotherhood, honour and redemption. Presented here are two of his early works from this period.  In Last Hurrah for Chivalry, two killers (Pai Wei and Damian Lau) agree to help a man exact vengeance upon a kung fu master. Woo’s first cinematic masterpiece, Last Hurrah for Chivalry is a dark and violent revenge film, featuring lightning fast swordplay and stylish cinematography.  In Hand of Death, a young Shaolin monk must train to defeat a dangerous Manchu warlord (James Tien) who is intent on wiping out the Shaolin once and for all. Featuring early performances from Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung (both also handled the film s stunts, along with third brother Yuen Biao), Hand of Death is an exquisitely stylish example of old school kung fu filmmaking.  Obscure and largely unseen for many years, Eureka Classics is proud to present these two early films from one of action cinema s all-time greats for the first time ever on Blu-ray, from brand new 2K restorations. In 1994 moviegoers met a man named Forrest Gump whose story was both a deeply personal and affecting odyssey and a universal meditation on our times.  Hailed as “magical” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times) and filled with “startling grace” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone), FORREST GUMP became not only a global blockbuster, but a true cultural touchstone.  25 years later, FORREST GUMP remains a treasured cinematic classic that is beloved and quoted the world over.  Tom Hanks gives an astonishing performance as Forrest, an everyman whose simple innocence comes to embody a generation.  Alongside his mamma (Sally Field), his best friend Bubba (Mykelti Williamson), his commanding officer Lieutenant Dan (Gary Sinise), and his favorite girl Jenny (Robin Wright), Forrest has a ringside seat for the most memorable events of the second half of the 20th century.

Crank (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Crank 4K ReviewCrank is fondly immortalized in my memories as one of the first elite Blu-ray titles that overwhelmingly wowed and showed off how razor sharp certain 1080p video footage could be.  I know we have come a long way since then with both 4K and 8K video sources and displays, but in the early days of HD (circa 2006) this was an absolute looker.   I fondly remember my eyes being dried out taking this in for the first time as I had never seen anything that chiseled before on my Sony 40” HDTV monitor at the time.  Wow!  This brings back so many memories, but honestly it was only 13 years ago not the lifetime I seem to be painting here.  That does warrant and raises the following question.  Since Crank was captured from a multitude of sources, some not even 1080p, how is this one going to look on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format?  After we get through the Film 101 below that’s going to be the subject we tackle next.  So stay tuned and if you’re just here for the A/V specs, by all means jump down to it below. ‘The Cockleshell Heroes’ [Eureka Classics] on Blu-ray & DVD July 15, 2019!

At the height of the Second World War, a battalion of German ships are safely docked at the “unassailable” port of Bordeaux. Newly promoted Major Stringer (José Ferrer, also behind the camera as director) has a unique idea send a team of commandos out in collapsible canoes, have them paddle seventy miles upriver in arduous conditions and blow up the German ships with limpet mines. Also starring Trevor Howard and Christopher Lee, The Cockleshell Heroes is the true story of one of the most daring raids in British military history, and Eureka Classics is proud to present the film in its worldwide debut on Blu-ray.  Continue reading ‘‘The Cockleshell Heroes’ [Eureka Classics] on Blu-ray & DVD July 15, 2019!’
