I was very much against this movie being made ever since it was originally announced. I even rejoiced when the rumored Boba Fett film crashed and burned. It’s not that I don’t want another Star Wars film, because I do. It’s because of the fact I can’t credibly think of a world where you can ever do Han Solo justice in his early years with anyone besides Harrison Ford portraying the character. I know that’s being completely short-minded, but that’s just me and my selfish/bullish beliefs. I never said I was perfect, far from it in fact. However, then a flick came around and changed my mind on how I saw the Star Wars universe, in particular the spinoffs. That gem was Rogue One. I adore everything about the feature despite the fact that not a single Jedi with a lightsaber was pictured in it. Well, there was that Darth Vader guy, and what a scene/spectacle that was! Needless to say the trailers for Solo here looked like an absolute blast. Given the fact that I was enamored by Rogue One I have nothing but longing hope for much the same sentiments with Solo here. And oh yeah! That’s what we’re gathered here today to tackle down below. Time to rev up the hyperdrive! Continue reading ‘Board, Blast Away and Have Fun with ‘Solo,’ A Star Wars Story (Movie Review)’

The Matrix is almost synonymous with the term science fiction in the late 90’s. If you look the term up in the dictionary, you’ll find a reference to the film The Matrix. I’m just kidding, but universal law should work that way. When The Matrix came out it was pretty much instantly adopted and heralded as a sci-fi classic. It was even pioneering in the way special effects were done in movie making. Do you remember how pretty much every film that came out within a few years of The Matrix’s release adopted the slow motion action sequences seen within? I do and they still use this gimmick. Look at last year’s Justice League. Some of the film’s action sequences took pages out of The Matrix’s playbook. Not that it was ever dead, but it certainly lit a fire under the career of Keanu Reeves not to mention pave the careers of The Wachowski Brothers. So let’s talk all about this down below. What say you? The red pill or blue?

It can’t be simple to follow-up a directorial debut as successful as the Oscar-winning Ex Machina. For Alex Garland, however, things seem to be falling into place. Annihilation is his sophomore effort as a director, but Garland’s previous screenplays for films such as 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Dredd have established him as one willing to explore science fiction in a variety of ways. Given all his experience, it’s only right to see him take on a project such as this, which provides a balance between hard sci-fi concepts and the horror found in a beautiful, yet dangerous wonderland. Unfortunately, Paramount didn’t quite know what to do with the well-reviewed film, so following a controversial theatrical release, this solid Blu-ray release now exists to give audiences enough special features and a fantastic technical presentation to supplement a terrific film.

Its slightly odd to be here writing a Blu-ray review for a movie that is not only still playing in theaters on its first run, but was STILL in the top 10 last weekend at the box office. A film that is going to cross 700 million dollars in the United States and has made over 1.3 billion dollars worldwide. Black Panther was a massive phenomenon and quite an unstoppable force in theaters pretty much all 2018 so far (Once February hit). Of course, there’s a new Avengers movie out right now, too, so you have to get Black Panther out on all formats so that the 5 people who didn’t see it can catch up for the big Thanos expedition. This 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray comes courtesy of Disney and comes piled with some really nice bonus features. For thirty years now there are people who still endlessly debate and call the action movie Die Hard a Christmas film. To me I never really thought of it that way until recently. Maybe I had blinders on all this time, but I always just regarded Die Hard as simply one of the greatest action films of my generation growing up. It had it all: a flawed hero, a donut eating cop as a buddy, a memorable villain, a high tower and most importantly, Rated R action, execution and language. If you know me personally and all my seemingly endless hang ups in life, then you’ll know that last point I make about it be Rated R is very important to me. It allows the film and its action to breathe unrestrictedly. You keep telling yourself that people getting sprayed down mercilessly by automatic weapons in Christopher Nolan PG-13 films with no visible blood is perfectly fine. I’ll just nod at you in a non-verbal agree to disagree mentality, but I digress. Let’s talk some 30th anniversary Die Hard down below.

This August, The Tree of Life, visionary filmmaker Terrence Malick’s magnum opus starring Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain, will join the Criterion Collection in an edition featuring a new cut that includes nearly fifty minutes of additional footage. And fifty years after its initial release put Cuban cinema on the map, Memories of Underdevelopment, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea’s long-unavailable masterpiece set against the tumultuous backdrop of the Cuban Revolution, will appear in a new 4K restoration. Director Robert M. Young brings his keen eye for socially engaged drama to The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, a passion project for producer-star Edward James Olmos and a landmark of Chicano cinema, appearing on Blu-ray and DVD for the first time. Susan Seidelman will join the collection with her trailblazing independent debut, Smithereens, a punk-rock portrait of down-and-out scenesters in 1980s New York, in a new, director-approved 2K restoration. And that’s not all: Ernst Lubitsch’s sly Technicolor comedy Heaven Can Wait will makes its first appearance on Blu-ray in a new 4K restoration.
