Not too long after the historic release of Braveheart (see my 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray review of it all here) an oddly similar role and tale came into existence for Mr. Mel Gibson. I suppose it’s relatively easy to confuse the two tales as we’ll cover in more detail down below they very much share the same DNA in both story and character. However, Braveheart took place in Scotland within the 1200s and the story we are all gathered here today for, The Patriot, transpires during the 1770s in which the American Revolutionary War went down. Like Braveheart though The Patriot thrives on a very inspirational leader in a character once again portrayed by Mel Gibson and is ripe for the picking with grand scale epic action and emotional zingers. It very much moves me in all the same ways in which Braveheart does and for that I can award the film nothing less than a P-E-R-F-E-C-T score. Keep in mind though like Braveheart is The Patriot is also a long one too, albeit well worth the wait in my opinion.

Alex Garland really made a sweeping debut Ex Machina. A smaller scale science fiction film that was welcoming both to the hardcore and general moviegoer. That film even snuck up on us and won an Academy Award. For his follow up, Annihilation, Garland dug even deeper in the the hard science fiction elements. The film was noted for getting a wide release domestically, but Paramount let this become a Netflix movie for all the other countries in the world. Controversial, yes, but this may have been a good move as this isn’t the most accessible or general friendly audience film many of the people upset about the Netflix deal might think. Lucky enough, it IS coming to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray after just initially announcing standard Blu-ray only. The trick was that the 4K was coming as a Best Buy exclusive. This exclusive also is set for a May 29th release. Continue reading ‘Annihilation (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Gnomeo & Juliet have been holding on, waiting and waiting and pining for the sequel to their beloved animated film for seven long years. In 2018, they all could breathe a huge, collective sigh of relief as Sherlock Gnomes finally came together and was released to theaters. Adding a brand new character to the mix, the superfans had plenty of mystery going in on “Who exactly is this Sherlock Gnomes, anyway?” Twitter seemed okay with actor Johnny Depp playing the titular role, unlike some other franchises he’s been apart of, as not a peep or tweet was angrily made at the film’s screenwriter or director. No theories of Sherlock Gnomes having shapeshifting abilities were tiredly shared. Anyway fans, your day to own it is here. You’ll be able to grab a copy of the film when it comes to Blu-ray June 12th. Continue reading ‘Sherlock Gnomes (Blu-ray Review)’

Spy fantasy films seem to be on the comeback trail the last few year, with a year like 2015 deliver upwards of five of them alone. This year will see the sixth Mission: Impossible film in the Tom Cruise-led franchise. Red Sparrow finds us reteaming Jennifer Lawrence with the director of three out of four Hunger Games films, Francis Lawrence. The film focuses on the modern day Russian side of the espionage game. If anything its an old school star led vehicle for Jennifer Lawrence and finds her with a pretty talented supporting cast. While the film underwhelmed at the box office, the take still kind of impresses being the movie was sold as based on nothing but Jennifer Lawrence name and face on the poster and trailers. You can snag yourself a copy of the film now by order from the Amazon link below. Continue reading ‘Red Sparrow (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Disney had high hopes for the big budget adaptation of the classic book A Wrinkle In Time. Making waves by hiring on acclaimed director Ava DuVernay to helm as well as exciting diverse casting announcements. Unfortunately, this didn’t really take off as they’d have liked and opened to poor reviews as it bombed at the box office back this spring. But, when you’re making Black Panther and Infinity War money, the studio can afford to try something like this out and keep trying something like this out. The film is coming to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray for those who missed it to check out, and maybe it’ll develop a following after its theatrical release. Let’s face it. Escape Plan is the tag team hardcore action moviegoers of my generation have been dying to see happen on the big screen ever since the big guns of the 80’s. With the exception of Arnold’s brief scenes in The Expendables series, Escape Plan truly marks the first time Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger have starred together in the same film. I don’t know how you feel about it, but that’s one massive production in my opinion with both of those hulking names thrown together in the same ring. With the upcoming sequel, Escape Plan 2: Hades, hitting theaters everywhere June 14th Lionsgate decided to step the game up here with the first film on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray June 5th. So until we can discuss the sequel in more detail we are gathered here today to everything about 2013’s Escape Plan.

Amid the triumphant box office phenomenon that was Black Panther, we witnessed many would-be blockbusters falter of produce average/underwhelming results. However, there were some solid counter-programming hits during that run. One of those was the R-rated adult comedy-mystery Game Night. Taking the silver to Black Panther its opening weekend, the film made a solid run with good holds to work its way to over $116 million for the $37 million budgeted comedy. While a decent hit, its getting passed over for the 4K Ultra-HD format for a standard Blu-ray. This movie does lend itself to many of pros that would have come with the format, but this is otherwise fine. I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets one down the road sometime when producing the discs is a little cheaper. For now you can grab this stnadard Blu-ray. by clicking the Amazon link following the review. Continue reading ‘Game Night (Blu-ray Review)’

Back finally with a picture pause last week (the worthwhile looking First Reformed was again not made available to me!) to highlight the smaller film fare for fans looking for something off the beaten path. Mostly genre work and a pinch foreign film fare seem to be taking over this edition’s crop of cinematic hopefuls with tales of blind witnesses, insight into the private life of scary scribes, an arcade game that requires more than quarters to play and youthful coming-of-age after parental loss all making up the flicks dissected via this week’s Encapsulated Movie Reviews. Check out the skinny on In Darkness, Mary Shelley, Sequence Break and Summer 1993 all below.

I was very much against this movie being made ever since it was originally announced. I even rejoiced when the rumored Boba Fett film crashed and burned. It’s not that I don’t want another Star Wars film, because I do. It’s because of the fact I can’t credibly think of a world where you can ever do Han Solo justice in his early years with anyone besides Harrison Ford portraying the character. I know that’s being completely short-minded, but that’s just me and my selfish/bullish beliefs. I never said I was perfect, far from it in fact. However, then a flick came around and changed my mind on how I saw the Star Wars universe, in particular the spinoffs. That gem was Rogue One. I adore everything about the feature despite the fact that not a single Jedi with a lightsaber was pictured in it. Well, there was that Darth Vader guy, and what a scene/spectacle that was! Needless to say the trailers for Solo here looked like an absolute blast. Given the fact that I was enamored by Rogue One I have nothing but longing hope for much the same sentiments with Solo here. And oh yeah! That’s what we’re gathered here today to tackle down below. Time to rev up the hyperdrive! Continue reading ‘Board, Blast Away and Have Fun with ‘Solo,’ A Star Wars Story (Movie Review)’
