Time travel in cinema it doesn’t always have to have big extravagant effects to be effective as sometimes smaller can be better – welcome to Forgotten Friday Flick! Still within the realms of the wide world – but focusing outside the US of course – this week we head to Spain for a little past picture inspiration in the form of a foreign flick that dares to do high tech on no-budget. It’s a nifty little ditty that’s a clever mix of horror, suspense and drama (all the things Hitchcock used to love!) all the while being a believable sci-fi flick about traveling through time that appropriately bends the brain and heightens the senses. Careful what you spy through those prying eyes as you could accidentally witness some…Timecrimes. Continue reading ‘Forgotten Friday Flick – “Timecrimes”’

When last we saw old Pinhead and the Hellraiser gang, it was in Revelations. It was the first non-Doug Bradley in the series and heaping pile of flaming turds. The film was made with the sole purpose of hanging onto the rights and it absolutely felt like it. Now, we are here again with Hellraiser: Judgement, a film likely made to hold onto the rights to the cenobites. However, this one appears to have been given more time to get a decent straight to video production done (The last one got whipped together after their plans to remake the original fell apart last minute). As a horror junkie and fan of the series, I can help but not give into my mortal sins of curiosity and check this out. Lowest of the low in expectations, just give me some of the essentials and we can dance. You’ll be able to see for yourself on February 13th, making for a nice bloody Valentine’s Day. Anyone who knows me as a passionate movie geek knows I go professionally ga-ga over the layered work of actress Jess Weixler. Having been on my movie radar since her groundbreaking turn as a teen with a little something extra in the vagina dentata steeped sleeper Teeth, the classically trained Juilliard graduate has gone on to create a multitude of memorable performances that do not disappoint. From her chemistry ridden pairing with Jason Ritter in Peter And Vandy to her tasty turn as the sister of Jessica Chastain in The Disappearance Eleanor Rigby (Her and Them!) and even getting behind the camera to co-write and co-direct the quirky comedy Apartment Troubles (formerly Trouble Dolls!), Weixler and her work continue to captivate. (Plus her five-star role in the sassy outing Free Samples earned her the coveted #1 spot on my Top Five Female Performances of 2012!)

Like Drag Me To Hell before it, here comes another more “modern” Collector’s Edition version from Scream Factory. Its The Strangers which, doesn’t seem like it, is now ten years old this coming summer. And its taken that long for the film to get a sequel which is arriving very soon. They are updating it with a new HD master of both cuts of the film as well as some new interviews with a few folks (Not Liv Tyler, Scott Speeman or …man it would be awesome…Glenn Howerton). This is one of the spookiest films of the previous decade and I’m glad to see it getting some genuine double dip love here. If you want to pre-order yourself to have it when it arrives next month, click the Amazon link below. It arrives on March 6th, which is just 3 days before the new one comes out! A beloved classic of American cinema, Delbert Mann’s Marty was the first ever recipient of the Palme d Or at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival, as well as the winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture, one of only two films to ever win both organisations grand prizes (the second being Billy Wilder s The Lost Weekend). I ve been looking for a girl every Saturday night of my life, says Marty Piletti (Ernest Borgnine, The Vikings, Violent Saturday). Yet, despite all his efforts, this 34-year old Bronx butcher remains as shy and uncomfortable around women today as on the day he was born. So when he meets Clara (Betsy Blair, Il Grido), a lonely schoolteacher who s just as smitten with him as he is with her, Marty s on top of the world. But not everyone around him shares his joy. And when his friends and family continually find fault with Clara, even Marty begins to question his newfound love… until he discovers, in an extraordinary way, the strength and courage to follow his heart. Well, it’s clear the American trailers have done a disservice to Peter Rabbit. Based on the classic children’s stories created by Beatrix Potter, this 2018 cinematic interpretation has the appearance of…well, something like Smurfs. The actual film is much better. It’s no Paddington 2, which came out first and could bury this movie any day of the week, but Peter Rabbit has a lot more cleverness and understated comedy going along with all the slapstick fun and jukebox-like soundtrack selection. Suffice it to say, this rabbit has a few good-natured tricks up its jacket sleeves.

Daddy’s Home 2 huh? I’m a bit lukewarm when it comes to the first Daddy’s Home in 2015. It was mildly funny and heartwarming, but I dunno. I just haven’t always been the biggest fan of every Will Ferrell movie, but really for no reason in particular. There’s also no denying his wealth of catalog titles that I do like too. Am I confusing you yet? Ha! Let’s just say the Daddy’s Home franchise of films is nothing I would ever pay theatrically to see. However, in the home front it’s a whole different story. If it doesn’t cost you anything extra, then why not? So here we are a few years later and low and behold we have a sequel. Why not when you can make easy money on a bankable property, right? Absolutely! Money is what makes this world go around. The first was popular, featured a likable cast so here we are again with a bonafide sequel primed to double its money back in Daddy’s Home 2. Let’s take a closer look below at this feature and everything you’ll find here in this February 20th 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray package from Paramount.

The Gate was a nice little cult classic in the way of those like an Amblin film, The Goonies or Monster Squad was. Kids against some supernatural evils. Its fun and still holds up pretty decently. The original was release from the Vestron Video Collector’s Series line last year. Now, complimenting that, from Scream Factory we get the supercharged sequel to that horror classic that comes alive with unearthly creatures, heart-stopping action and incredible special effects. While not a part of the Collector’s Edition line, its coming complete with a 2K transfer that also has new interviews and such, giving the essentials of one of those. You’ll be able to pick this one up (You can already pre-order it, do so below) when it released on February 20th. Continue reading ‘Gate II (Blu-ray Review)’

This March, we are getting another crack taken at the Tomb Raider game franchise being adapted to the big screen with Alicia Vikander as the new Lara Croft. Let us not forget the early 2000s when much excitement came and the perfect bit of dream casting in that of Angela Jolie in the title role. While the film did solid box office, most found it to be a bit of a disappointment, though still led to a sequel The Cradle of Life. Many will tell you that was a much better and actually good film. However, people didn’t trust their dollars on it after the first and its box office failure effectively shut down the franchise. But, with a reboot comes the great think in that the home video editions of the originals usually see a nice upgrade. And here we are with both Tomb Raider films seeing a 4K Ultra-HD format jump. You can pre-order these and have them ready to go on February 27th. Continue reading ‘Fall Into The “TOMB RAIDER Trap” When Both Angelina Jolie Films Come To 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray February 27th!’

Hey, a new PR for my favorite film of 2017! From master storyteller, Guillermo del Toro, comes THE SHAPE OF WATER, an otherworldly fairy tale set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1962. In the hidden, high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones. Up for 13 Oscars and featuring special features to bring you closer to del Toro’s world, add THE SHAPE OF WATER to your digital collection on Movies Anywhere beginning February 27 and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on March 13.
