Class Of 1999 – Collector’s Series (Blu-ray Review)

Eight years following his acclaimed cult film thriller, Class of 1984 (Which I reviewed the Scream Factory Collector’s Edition a few years back), Mark L. Lester decided to jump things into the future with another entry in the gangs overtaking their high schools series. Class of 1999 released in 1990 and in 2018 is becoming the latest in the well regarded Vestron Video Collector’s Series. You’ll note that Lionsgate had a horror 8-pack DVD set from years ago that this was featured in. In that same set, 5 other movies featured in it have been made into Vestron Video Collector’s Series releases. Now, there are only Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go To College and 976-EVIL 2 remaining. Could those be coming soon? One can only hope. Class of 1999 will make the jump on January 30th. Pre-order yourself a copy using the Amazon link at the end of the review. DC Kicks Off New Line with Some ‘Damage’

In late 2017, DC Comics announced several new comic book series that would begin in early 2018. With a total of eight new titles set, DC is looking to establish some new characters, like Damage, while bringing back some old…Plastic Man, anyone? Innovation and creativity are key in the industry so it’s no surprise the new roster of heroes (are they all heroes?) are making their debut. Keep an eye out in the coming months for The Silencer, Sideways, The Terrifics, The Immortal Men, The Curse of Brimstone, New Challengers and The Unexpected. For now though, DC has satiated our appetite with the first of the eight new series, Damage.

Geostorm (Blu-ray Review)

The ‘ol disaster movies have their respective fans and place in our cinematic calendar year. There are many corner, low budgeted ones that come around in places like the Sci Fi channel much of the time, but almost once every other year, we see one try to grab that success on the big screen. And usually, these things (Especially Roland Emmerich ones) tend to be global hits. Get a solid cast of veteran actors and a star or two, threaten the Earth, give us stakes by showing significant landmarks destroyed, corny one-liners, fake science and WAH-LAH! This year’s contribution was the much delayed and reshot Geostorm with Gerard Butler. The trailer itself looked quite crazy and didn’t warn of Earth destruction, but for audiences domestically not to come to the theater. However, you’ll be able to see it from the comfort of your couch on Blu-ray January 23rd! Continue reading ‘Geostorm (Blu-ray Review)’

‘Mary and the Witch’s Flower’ – The Rise Of Broom Girl (Movie Review)

For a story mainly focused on a young girl, her broom, and a cat, there is a lot of action and excitement to be found in Mary and the Witch’s Flower. Here’s an animated film that opens with explosions and a mid-air chase scene involving a witch on a broom and flying fish-like creatures. It also happens to be a delightful coming-of-age story about perseverance and understanding who you want to be. Bringing these two ideas together, Mary and the Witch’s Flower is a colorful blast of adventure, magic, and the sort of thrilling animation one would hope to see from an animation studio that isn’t afraid to embrace the abstract.

The LEGO Ninjago Movie (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Apologies on the tardiness of this review as its been out for a month now (December 12th was the street date for this release), but its brand new to me as I’ve just received it. The second LEGO movie of 2017, following on the heels of the very successful LEGO Batman Movie which itself followed the hugely successful The LEGO Movie. The LEGO Ninjago Movie was the first test of brand loyalty with the LEGO “franchise” and well, it didn’t have Batman and people clearly knew this wasn’t the further adventures of Emmett and Wyldstyle.  Yeah, the movie massively underperformed in comparison to those two films. Ninjago is a more strict to LEGO brand, so they may give a go with a more known entity the next time around. As I mentioned, the film is already available, so if you don’t have it and you want or need it, check out the Amazon link below and help yourself and help the site at the same time when ordering. Ingrid Bergman, Sofia Coppola, Jim Jarmusch & More Coming to The Criterion Collection in April 2018

This April, Sergei Parajanov’s masterpiece The Color of Pomegranates, a revelatory film-poem overflowing with sensuous imagery, will join the Criterion Collection, on Blu-ray for the first time and in a stunning new 4K restoration. Also making its Blu-ray debut, Leo McCarey’s genre-defining comedy The Awful Truth stars the irresistible Irene Dunne and Cary Grant as would-be ex-spouses who can’t get enough of each other. The latest entry in our Eclipse line provides an origin story for another one of Hollywood’s most iconic stars: Ingrid Bergman’s Swedish Years collects six of the actor’s earliest performances and showcases her extraordinary range, which spanned crime thrillers, comedy, and melodrama. And there’s more: Dead Man, an ambitious, hypnotic western by Jim Jarmusch that enlists the poetry of William Blake and the music of Neil Young to turn the genre on its head, appears in a new 4K restoration supervised by the director. Plus, Sofia Coppola joins the collection with her debut, The Virgin Suicides, an ominously dreamy coming-of-age reverie adapted from Jeffrey Eugenides’s celebrated novel, appearing in a 4K digital transfer supervised by cinematographer Ed Lachman and approved by the director.
