Silicon Valley: The Complete Third Season (Blu-ray Review)

Silicon Valley Complete Third Season Blu-rayI’m going to start this one by giving you the same ramble I did last year.  Working in the IT industry myself I can’t tell you what a breath of fresh air it is to see people going through the same stress, trials and tribulations as myself in the industry.   I may not be involved directly in a tech startup company, but I know how things work in corporate America/Silicon Valley and sometimes HBO’s hit comedy series Silicon Valley hits oh so close to home for me.  You can read all about my take on Season One in my 2014 Blu-ray review over here and Season Two here.  However, today we’re here to discuss everything Season Three, which is making its Blu-ray debut on April 11th.   So here we go!  Let’s SWOT things out down below. Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

In celebration of the 4K Ultra HD release Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, the latest adventure and series starter in the wizarding world lived in by J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, Warner Bros is format jumping the original films in the series.  They’ll all get that higher resolution with High Dynamic Range applied to them, to look sharper, prettier and newer.  In my opinion, Warner Bros has been one of the more impressive studios when it comes to upgrading their catalog titles to 4K.  One would think they are going to a lot of attention to one of their biggest franchises ever.  They are releasing them in waves, with the four David Yates films (The back half of the series) being the first to come out.  No date is set yet for the first four, but they’ll be here soon enough.  This review will focus on the final chapter of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 from 2011.  It, and the others will be available March 28th. Being There – The Criterion Collection (Blu-ray Review)

The sublime comedy Being There has finally made its way to The Criterion Collection, further cementing its status as a true classic. The film received multiple awards and other acclaim, including a Best Actor nomination for star Peter Sellers and a Best Supporting Actor win for Melvyn Douglas. This praise was well-earned, as the Hal Ashby-directed film presented a wonderful satirical tale of how an anxious and delusional society could fall prey to a simple man’s charms. Previous releases have kept this film from falling out of the public conscious, but this Criterion Blu-ray easily provides the ultimate experience in enjoying the film and providing further insight in regards to its legacy.

Why Him? (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Why Him? is ordinarily not the kind of film I would go see in the theaters.  Had it not been for two key factors I don’t think I would have gone.  First it had the very irresistible and hilarious trailers on its side.   That Red-band one was insane.  Although I went in hoping that all the funny parts were not included in said trailers.  Second, there was the nod to “from the makers of I Love You Man.”  I love that comedy flick!  So as you can see right from the get go I was walking into Why Him? ahead in the count.  Now is the moment of truth and also the chance to have fun with the title’s question mark.  What did I think of Why Him?  That is the question we are all pondering here, right?  Why Him? The Visually Stunning ‘Ghost In The Shell’ Has A Major Problem (Movie Review)

For a new potential blockbuster so rich with ideas and visual imagination, it’s a shame to be left feeling so little for those involved in this story. Problematic casting issues aside (more on that later), this adaptation of the Japanese manga and anime film certainly felt like it was striving to deliver an intelligent look at exploring one’s self-identity in a world defined by technological advancements. The added bonus should be how Ghost in the Shell frames these thematics within the confines of an action film. There is great value in this film’s overall presentation, but it sadly fails to explore its own self-identity, let alone update its familiar ideas.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Blu-ray Review)

While Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was sold as the first “spin off” of the galaxy far far away, its far from the first side stepping project.  Most of it has been through television (Christmas! Ewoks!), books, comic books, video games and other mediums. But, its no stranger to the theatrical front, either. Star Wars: The Clone Wars, while really three episodes tied together, was launched as a feature film in 2008. What Rogue One really represents is an attempt at serious, hardcore canon, live-action films that have as much put into their production and development as that of the Skywalker saga. As much pressure as there was on The Force Awakens to help restore Star Wars and introduce it to a new generation, Rogue One had pressure to show George Lucas’ creation could branch out and do other things while also being a virtual unknown in terms of how something like this might look and feel.  Sigh of relief, the movie turned out to be outstanding, was well reviewed and took to audiences globally to a tune of over a billion dollars worldwide and becoming one of the highest grossing films of all time. You’ll be able to own the tale of  stealing the Death Star plans on Blu-ray starting April 4th. Continue reading ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Blu-ray Review)’

‘The Boss Baby’ Deserves A Time Out (Movie Review)

He’s a boss and a baby. He’s a Boss Baby. The Boss Baby pitch meeting could not have been much simpler than that, but I guess that wouldn’t give credit to the original children’s picture book by Marla Frazee. Of course, that book is only 36 pages (and I’m sure The Bossier Baby isn’t much longer), where this DreamWorks computer-animated movie needs to fill at least 90 minutes. That was apparently a struggle and it shows. While the novelty of the premise is one thing, sitting through this entire feature didn’t exactly have me wishing for a promotion to sit even higher among the other boss babies of the world.

Power Rangers (Movie Review)

“Power Rangers” is one of the most bizarre action films to be released in some time. Scenes are so visually and tonally inconsistent that they seem to have been directed and edited by completely different people. Sequences are repeated so often that the story never truly seems to get off the ground. The cast is likable enough, but they’re never given much to do besides look frustrated in a film that is not necessarily at war with itself, but oddly unaware of itself.

Silence (Blu-ray Review)

This past winter gave us the latest film from Martin Scorsese. Silence garnered strong reviews and made a number of top ten lists, but was not able to find much of an audience in theaters or score any major awards, beyond an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography. That’s not necessarily unexpected, but I do expect time to be quite kind to what Scorsese managed to accomplish here. It’s a film I certainly haven’t stopped thinking about and now that it’s on Blu-ray, I’ll be curious to see what the audience perception of this lengthy drama becomes.
