The Legend of Tarzan feels like a film that was set up to fail from the very start. How much interest is there really with a modern day telling of Tarzan where your leading man sports blonde locks? The trailers were personally satisfying, but something about it just reeked of stay away to me. That’s why I never saw this one theatrically. Now don’t get me wrong. I love me some Alexander Skarsgard. I grew up watching and adoring him as Eric in True Blood and his casting here had absolutely nothing to do with my staying away from this property theatrically. Admittedly so I’m not much of a Tarzan fan. I could care less really. However, that state of mind all changed after seeing Suicide Squad this past August. I realized something about The Legend of Tarzan I failed to initially see. Margot Robbie is in this one! Hello, Jane! Me Tarzan! Continue reading ‘The Legend of Tarzan (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

With their horror centric podcast this week, my WhySoBlu partners in crime decided to go down the haunted hallway of all things monster mash so I’m frighteningly following suit – welcome to Forgotten Friday Flick. While my creature feature selection this week is in fact a retelling of a classic 1958 creepy campfire tale (“help me!”), it’s a fright fest that is firmly given a fascinating new stamp by all involved and thus worthy of a revisit. The classic tale of a mad scientist who decides to experiment on himself with horrendous results is given a shot of nitroglycerin in the form of groundbreaking make-up effects and a signature story style from one of the best demented minds in the business. You hear that buzzing? It’s…The Fly!

Those of us who dig cool cinematic coming age stories know that the great ones almost always use era for inspiration. Be it the last day of school in the 70’s via Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused or the 80’s ridden tale of love found and lost with Cameron Crowe’s Say Anything, true tales of teen woe frequently involve a plethora of outside influences. Such is the case with the outstanding new film London Town (out Oct. 7 in select theaters, iTunes and VOD from IFC Films), a flick set in the turbulent times of England 1979 and at the height of the Punk music movement. The story itself centers around a young 14-year-old boy named Shay who, amidst being forced to grow up fast due to family obligations, one day is exposed to the colorful and thoughtful music of The Clash and it changes his life forever. Part of me would like to think The Girl on the Train is in on the joke. Here’s a film that no doubt understands how silly its story is, but happily lets the three main female cast members channel plenty of energy to provide strong performances. It manages to feature men these women obsess over, yet all the guys featured are as bland as plain wallpaper. Regardless, The Girl on the Train seems bent on delivering a mystery/thriller out of these ingredients. Placing the preposterousness of this story aside, however, the biggest issue is how dull the film is.

Every summer folks flock to see the giant superhero blockbusters, the big animated features for the family (That a lot of adults get more out of), large scale epics, Purge movies and some of those small films that click along the way. Forgotten among the ranks sometimes are the straight comedies and rom coms with notable casts. You gotta fill that void a couple times a month and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates was one of those movies. It felt like you couldn’t escape that trailer no matter what you went to see from the Spring until it came out. A trailer that felt it was giving away the best the film had to offer. While I kinda looked at it as one I’d wait for home video on, I still was kinda interested based on the cast. The movie was a decent sized hit while being unfavorable with the critics. But, hey, everyone has a different sense of humor. Continue reading ‘Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

Before visiting The Great Gatsby theatrically, I strongly held the opinion that this was either going to be one of those films you’d love or you’d hate with absolutely no middle ground in the equation. I know I found myself seriously conflicted in how I felt about it for months before I saw it. The first trailer did nothing to persuade me that this was a film I must-see. Other than my infinite love for Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge masterpiece, I had not one ounce of desire to partake in a viewing. And then came the second theatrical trailer and it totally erased all the negativity I had surrounding the picture. Despite not being the biggest fan of Carey Mulligan, I found myself longing to see this spectacular unfold on screen. And then boom! A third trailer was released and I felt a little uneasy again until I saw a preview for the film on the Cloud Atlas Blu-ray I was reviewing at the time here. Talk about indecisiveness, eh? All I know is that after seeing this many times now I continuously melt over the heart wrenching love story, but I do know this…if you are not a fan of Moulin Rouge, this is not a movie for you. Be warned and move on below with caution. Continue reading ‘The Great Gatsby (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)’

In Blood Father, which comes out on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD on October 11th, Mel Gibson (Maverick, Payback) effortlessly transcends his troubled public persona to portray a gruff semi-racist man trying to escape his past by telling the only woman is his life to shut up and follow his instructions lest she find herself facing physical violence. Additionally, it has some pretty brutal and fun action scenes and doesn’t take itself too seriously, so it might just be worth a watch. Continue reading ‘Blood Father (Blu-Ray Review)’

When my reviewer Gerard Iribe and Aaron Neuwirth (his Comic-Con 2012 coverage here and WonderCon 2013’s here) first brought Pacific Rim to my attention, I wasn’t sold on it at all. The trailer and its crappy narration just felt way too generic for me. Although the concept has never been done in this grand of scale on the big screen, I could not help feeling like I’ve seen this all before in the countless hours of mecha and robot cartoons I used to watch as a kid. Prior to Pacific Rim‘s theatrical releasee saw trailer after trailer and each one was an improvement. However, I still wasn’t sold the first time I sat down to watch this. What was it about monsters from the Pacific Rim and giant man-made robots that had everyone‘s panties in a bunch that they were so excited over? I hate to sound like a screeching teenager, but OMG! This movie ended up being the BOMB! So much so that I actually paid to go back…BIGGER and BETTER the second time around. Oh yeah! I went IMAX 3-D and my ears bled in ecstasy from the stomping of the robots feet on the hard pavement to the smashing of their fists into the jaws of the Kaijus. The Birth of a Nation is a film designed to challenge various parts of me. There is a righteous part of me that sees a film recounting a historical event tying into relevant topics still affecting America today, as the nation continues to court more and more woke individuals. The other part concerns my role as one who critiques film and sees a lot of ambition being outdone, at times, by narrative and budgetary restraints. It is unfortunate that a film providing such a showcase for strong performances and evocative imagery is not more successful, but it does plenty to unpack a lot of clear anger in how history and beyond has been a struggle for many.

The Girl on the Train instantly has two things going for it. It features two actresses that will get me in the theater no matter what the film’s subject matter is about. I’m respectfully talking Emily Blunt and Rebecca Ferguson. Ever since Edge of Tomorrow, Sicario and Mission Impossible Rogue Nation I’m a sucker for both of them. Second, Entertainment Weekly talked so highly of this feature several issues ago that it warranted my attention. No. I take that back. Their praise of The Girl on the Train absolutely demanded my undivided attention. So here we are. The moment is upon us and I’m eager to blow this train’s whistle. Let’s stop this train and get on already! Continue reading ‘Buy A Ticket To Ride With ‘The Girl On The Train’ (Movie Review)’
