DEADPOOL 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Demo Event

deadpool 4kA week after the release of Deadpool on Blu-ray (review) and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, I was invited by 20th Century Fox to attend a demo event at the Fox Innovation Lab that would help explain the process of delivering what is currently the best possible home viewing experience for new releases. The result was an interesting look at another side of the hit superhero film, which allowed for a better appreciation in all that goes into crafting the film in its life both before and after its theatrical release.

5 Things I want to see in the Predator sequel

5 Things I want to see in the Predator sequelAs I’m sure many of you are aware, Shane Black, the mastermind behind the very first Predator film is currently in the writing stages of bringing us a sequel titled, “The Predator”.  Based on what he’s said so far, this just might be the movie that all of us die-hard fans have been waiting for!  The last Predator film that truly encapsulated everything that we’ve grown to love about the character, was Predator 2.  Since then, we’ve gotten some predictable and ham-fisted attempts at upping the stakes by pitting him against the Xenomorph in Alien vs Predator, or when they made a watered down version of the first film with Predators.

Criterion Collection August Releases

CriterionGet your wallets ready, because the Criterion Collection is about to have one hell of a month. Orson Welles will preside over Criterion’s incredible August lineup. First, Chimes at Midnight, Welles’s monumental Shakespeare adaptation—for decades, one of the world’s most sought-after lost films—in a gorgeous new restoration straight from Janus Films’ successful theatrical run. Meanwhile, Welles’s The Immortal Story, starring Jeanne Moreau, is a gorgeous reverie of a film that, like Chimes, has never before been available on DVD or Blu-ray in the U.S. Speaking of dreamlike films, presented is Robert Altman’s brilliant deconstructed western McCabe & Mrs. Miller, among the great works of the American 1970s, starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie. All this plus Tony Richardson’s benchmark of 1960s British realism A Taste of Honey, still a revelation; Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words, a revealing and beautifully constructed new documentary about the life and career of the legendary actor; and new DVD and Blu-ray editions of Hiroshi Teshigahara’s radical and erotic 1960s art-house sensation Woman in the Dunes.

‘The Angry Birds Movie’ Wastes More Of Your Time Than The Game (Movie Review)

angry birds thumbIt was about as frustrating to watch The Angry Birds Movie as it is to play the game and merely get one out of three stars on a given level. As harmless as a movie like this is, I am not all about giving something colorful and goofy a pass, simply because the young kids it targets will be swayed over, regardless of quality. There was an attempt to actually make this plotless mobile game about something, but try as filmmakers may have, with the help of screenwriters and a talented voice cast, nothing really helps when the final product misses so many targets.

Dirty Grandpa – Unrated (Blu-ray Review)

Dirty Grandpa Blu-ray ReviewThere was something a bit subliminal that drew me into eventually reviewing Dirty Grandpa on Blu-ray.  Maybe it was partly my love of Bad Grandpa (see my review here) or my loss of my own grandfathers in real life, but it could have also been that ingenious swag Lionsgate sent over too (see below).  You pick.  However, I do miss my own grandfathers.  The one was very wise and I wish I would have listened to him a lot more.  He had a lot of valuable life lessons that went in one ear and completely out the other.  And after taking in Dirty Grandfather for the very first time, I could totally see my other grandfather nailing De Niro’s role.  That’s the kind of “dirty,” lovable guy he was.  R.I.P. guys. ‘The Lobster’ Does More Than Just Pinch Your Dark Comedy Nerve (Movie Review)

the lobster thumbWhen you learn of a film with a premise as bizarre as The Lobster, there has to be hope it can really work. Oscar-nominee Yorgos Lanthimos has taken the offbeat sensibilities that helped his film Dogtooth catch on and applied it to his first English-language feature, which involves people either finding love or being turned into animals. The results are wickedly entertaining, as The Lobster manages to push forward a satirical look at a society forced into a ridiculous existential nightmare.

The Fix #2 (Comic Book Review)

The Fix #2Nick Spencer (Morning Glories, Astonishing Ant Man) and Steve Lieber (Whiteout, Quantum and Woody Must Die) first teamed up back in 2013 with the sleeper hit The Superior Foes of Spider-Man, a book that had a good run but was sadly cancelled after 17 great issues. Superior Foes focused on some of the Z-list villains that plagued Spider-Man on a regular basis and showed us exactly why their plans never really worked out, while providing some great laughs at the same time. Thankfully the creators have teamed up once more for another hilarious look at criminals who are very bad at crime with The Fix. Continue reading ‘The Fix #2 (Comic Book Review)’

Southern Bastards #14 (Comic Book Review)

Southern Bastards 14

Warning: if you aren’t yet caught up on Southern Bastards you may want to do so before reading on, there are some spoilers from early in the series ahead. (Seriously, though, if you’re not caught up on this book do yourself a favor and go read them all RIGHT NOW!)

Jason Aaron (Scalped, Doctor Strange) and Jason Latour (The Expatriate, Spider-Gwen) announced their book Southern Bastards back at the Image Expo in July of 2013 to much excitement. Up until this point Aaron had been tied to Marvel in an exclusive contract, and the idea of him returning to the world of creator owned content was something to look forward to. After all, this is the man responsible for Scalped, one of the best crime stories to come out of the last decade. Soon after, we were treated with a book that not only lived up to the expectations set forth by Scalped, but actually surpassed it in every way.
