Witness (Blu-ray Review)

WitnessWitness is finally making its debut in the US on Blu-ray.  Its been available in other countries for quite some time now.  Another one of those films that just seems so surprising that its taken so long to put out.  Not only is it a Harrison Ford film, but Peter Weir is no slouch in the director chair.  But, then again, time passes, things change.  Ford is no longer the starpower force he once was and Weir has only directed one film in the last twelve years, but with Master & Commander being his late noteworthy output.  This was a big film back when it was release and was nominated for quite a few big Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Harrison Ford’s sole Best Actor nomination.  The screenplay for this film is also highly celebrated and used as an example in plenty of film classes and books.  Be it Warner Bros celebrating its 30th anniversary or maybe even The Force Awakens bumping this one up the catalog chain to get to Blu-ray, its a win and a relief that this film has made it to the format. The Leftovers: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray Review)

The LeftoversTwo percent of the world’s population has disappeared. Was it the Rapture? Aliens? Or something else? Based on Tom Perrotta’s best-selling novel, The Leftovers follows Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) , police chief and father of two, in Mapleton, New York, three years after the mysterious event. As Garvey struggles to grieve for his losses, rebuild his life, and regain a sense of normalcy within the community, the world around him grows even stranger. The Hollywood Reporter’s Tim Goodman calls “this bold series…a triumph fro Tom Perrotta and Damon Lindelof, plus so many superb actors in the ensemble.” Don’t be left behind!  Continue reading ‘The Leftovers: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray Review)’

Matchstick Men (Blu-ray Review)

Matchstick-MenI want to thank The Martian for likely being part of the reason we are finally getting Ridley Scott’s Matchstick Men on Blu-ray.  A timely big name director’s newest movie probably got Warner Bros to dig a little in their catalog for something from him that wasn’t out yet.  The film original came out in 2003, the film that followed Scott’s 2001 two’fer of Hannibal and Black Hawk Down.  He’d actually done three films in two years because Gladiator released the previous year (Nabbing Ridley Scott his Best Director Nomination).  While I’m not sure whether the film was a financial failure or not, it didn’t really set the box office on fire domestically or globally upon its release.  While being a terrific film and garnering mostly great reviews, the film was completely forgotten come awards time.  It found its following mostly through home video and seemingly has been one of the films of the 00’s to achieve cult status.  Matchstick Men is a film I was pretty high on back in 2003 and still am today, and I was surprised it wasn’t on the format yet.  Had I realized that, it would have easily made one of my earliest wishlists long ago. Dope (Blu-ray Review)

319099K3_Dope_BDOring_ProdShot3DDope was a film I wish brokeout so much more this past summer. It may seem like a familiar coming-of-age story about kids from the hood, but it really applies to all generations. Writer/director Rick Famuyiwa‘s film studies the life of 90s-obsessed Malcolm (Shameik Moore). He’s just a high school geek, but that’s a simple start, and the film goes on to cleverly bounce between many ideas. Now the film has arrived on Blu-ray, so check out what’s in store for you.

Jackie Chan’s First Strike (Blu-ray Review)

First-StrikeLookie here!  Another Wishlist title getting checked off and put onto Blu-ray.  Jackie Chan’s First Strike is more suitably called Police Story IV: First Strike.  The Police Story movies are kind of Jackie Chan’s “going back to the well” franchise in Hong Kong.  This series started in the 1980s and is still going today (5 installments, the most recent came in 2013 but new to the US in 2015).  Unfortunately for fans, this edition making the Blu-ray debut is the US and UK cut of the film that played in theaters in 1996.  The film was notoriously hacked up for some reason and not just to speed up the action as full action sequences were cut.  Will that Hong Kong cut rise from the ashes over here one day?  Everyone seems to be pretty doubtful.  However, this US cut is still enjoyable in its own right, even if its a bit of a jumbled mess. The Gallows (Blu-ray Review)

The Gallows thumbThere are a number of pitfalls that directors can stumble into when venturing to make a film in the found-footage horror sub-genre. Some of these include: using the filmmaking technique to excuse sloppy editing and cinematography, allowing the shaky action to cover for subpar acting or an amateur script, adding any kind of non-diegetic sound (particularly music stings), relying too heavily on quick-camera-pan jump scares instead of tension, and, perhaps the biggest, never giving a reason for the film to be comprised of “found footage” or for the characters to be filming their actions. The Gallows, newly released on Blu-ray, succeeds so spectacularly at heaving itself into all of these pits that I am surprised the film wasn’t found when James Cameron explored the Mariana Trench. As if the tired found-footage gimmick weren’t enough to steer clear of this release, it should also be known that one can expect to find cliché horror elements, a predictable story, and paper-thin, wholly detestable characters. Crimson Peak Haunts With Lavish Production Design (Movie Review)

Crimson PeakIt doesn’t take long to put two and two together when watching the trailers for Crimson Peak.  The onscreen visuals scream unmistakably of Guillermo del Toro.  So much so that I couldn’t see anybody else directing this one, neither could Universal according to the history of this production.  At least Johnny Depp isn’t in this one.  However, I digress.  What really whets my appetite for Crimson Peak is the following quote from del Toro.  “But basically what it is is a really, really, almost classical gothic romance ghost story, but then it has two or three scenes that are really, really disturbing in a very, very modern way.  Very, very disturbing, it’s a proper R rating.  And it’s adult.”  If the man’s planning a gothic romance ghost story that’s really disturbing and scary, who am I to argue with him?  The fact that it has an R-rating is icing on the cake for me.  That means no weak sauce in my wheelhouse.  Enough with the big words, let’s talk some Crimson Peak. Jeff Lynne’s ELO – Live in Hyde Park (Live Concert Blu-ray Review)

Jeff Lynne's ELO: Live in Hyde ParkIt seems like the main goal that they were striving to achieve when making this concert was to maintain the classic aesthetic and style of the band while expanding upon the visual and musical experience.  The Electric Light Orchestra, or ELO as they’re more commonly known, is something of a juggernaut of classic hits.  Even the most casual music fan is likely to know a few of their tunes.  This is one of ELO’s headlining performances during BBC Radio 2’s “Festival in a Day” in London’s Hyde Park.
